Abstract
(R)-Bgugaine is a natural pyrrolidine alkaloid from Arisarum vulgare, which shows antifungal and antibacterial activity. In this Letter, we have accomplished the simple synthesis of norbgugaine (demethylated form of natural bgugaine) employing Wittig olefination and cat. hydrogenation as the key steps and its biological studies are reported for the first time. The synthesized norbgugaine was evaluated for inhibition of quorum sensing mediated virulence factors (motility, biofilm formation, pyocyanin pigmentation, rhamnolipid production and LasA protease) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa wherein swarming motility is reduced by 95%, and biofilm formation by 83%.

Abstract
The asymmetric synthesis of all four of the known natural phlegmarines and one synthetic derivative has been accomplished in 19-22 steps from 4-methoxy-3-(triisopropylsilyl)pyridine. Chiral N-acylpyridinium salt chemistry was used twice to set the stereocenters at the C-9 and C-2' positions of the phlegmarine skeleton. Key reactions include the use of a mixed Grignard reagent for the second N-acylpyridinium salt addition, zinc/acetic acid reduction of a complex dihydropyridone, and a von Braun cyanogen bromide N-demethylation of a late intermediate. These syntheses confirmed the absolute stereochemistry of all of the known phlegmarines.

Abstract
Six- and seven-membered cyclic enaminones can be prepared using common, environmentally benign reagents. Amino acids are used as synthetic precursors allowing diversification and the incorporation of chirality. The key reaction in this multistep process involves deprotection of Boc-amino ynones and subsequent treatment with methanolic K(2)CO(3) to induce cyclization. A β-amino elimination side reaction was identified in a few labile substrates that led to either loss of stereochemical purity or degradation. This process can be mitigated in specific cases using mild deprotection conditions. NMR and deuterium-labeling experiments provided valuable insight into the workings and limitations of this reaction. Although disguised as a 6-endo-dig cyclization, the reagents employed in the transformation play a direct role in bond-making and bond-breaking, thus changing the mode of addition to a 6-endo-trig cyclization. This method can be used to construct an array of monocyclic and bicyclic scaffolds, many of which are found in well-known natural products (e.g., indolizidine, quinolizidine, and Stemona alkaloids).

Abstract
Sulfinimine-derived N-sulfinyl delta-amino beta-ketophosphonates are transformed via the enaminones to the phosphoryl dihydropyridones that selectively give trans-2,6-disubstituted 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridines on organocuprate addition and dephosphorylation.

Abstract
cis-2-Methyl-6-substituted piperidin-3-ol alkaloids of the Cassia and Prosopis species are readily prepared by a combination of an aza-Achmatowicz oxidative rearrangement and dihydropyridone reduction followed by a stereoselective allylsilane addition to a N-sulfonyliminium ion. The stereochemical outcome of the reduction reaction can be attributed to steric hindrance between the pseudoaxially oriented 2,6-substituents and the equatorially approaching hydride reagent which explains the exclusive formation of the cis-alcohol by axial approach of the hydride. The unsaturation present in the (E)-methyl-pent-3-enoate side chain was removed by catalytic reduction, and the remaining ester group was converted to the corresponding Weinreb's amide. This key intermediate was utilized for the synthesis of azimic acid, deoxocassine, cassine, and spicigerine. The facile preparation of (S)-N-tosylamidofuran 16 and its conversion to the chiral Achmatowicz oxidation product 18 provide a formal chiral synthesis of these alkaloids.

Abstract
A detailed account regarding formal aza-[3 + 3] cycloaddition reactions of tetronamides with alpha,beta-unsaturated iminium salts is described here. This investigation uncovers regioisomeric cycloadducts that were not found in previous studies involving this formal cycloaddition and an unexpected rearrangement that led to pyridines and dihydropyridines. Both stereochemical and regiochemical issues raised in this study provide further mechanistic insights into this cycloaddition. With careful control of reaction temperatures, the desired formal cycloadducts are obtained. Ensuing transformation of these cycloadducts into functionalized piperidines establishes the concept of employing tetronamides as latent acyclic vinylogous amides for the formal aza-[3 + 3] cycloaddition.

Abstract
The highly stereoselective asymmetric 6pi-azaelectrocyclization was achieved as a general synthetic method based on the reaction between the (E)-3-carbonyl-2,4,6-trienal compounds and the (-)-7-alkyl-cis-1-amino-2-indanol derivatives which are effective chiral amines. The 7-alkyl-substituted 2-indanol moiety of the cyclized products was efficiently removed by the novel manganese dioxide oxidation under remarkably mild conditions, and the method was successfully applied to the formal synthesis of optically active 20-epiuleine.

Abstract
Evidence is described here to support that a highly stereoselective 6pi-electron electrocyclic ring closure of 1-azatrienes is a key step in formal [3 + 3] cycloaddition or annulation reactions of chiral vinylogous amides with alpha,beta-unsaturated iminium salts. This would represent the first highly stereoselective 6pi-electron electrocyclic ring closure of 1-azatrienes. We have also unambiguously demonstrated that these specific ring closures are reversible, leading to the major diastereomer that is also thermodynamically more stable, and that a rotation preference likely also plays a role. A synthetic application is illustrated here to stereoselectively transform the resulting dihydropyridines to cis-1-azadecalins with unique anti relative stereochemistry at C2 and C2a, leading to synthesis of epi isomers of (-)-pumiliotoxin C.
