Abstract
Functionalized tetrahydropyran (THP) rings are important building blocks and ubiquitous scaffolds in many natural products and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Among various established methods, the Prins reaction has emerged as a powerful technique in the stereoselective synthesis of the tetrahydropyran skeleton with various substituents, and the strategy has further been successfully applied in the total synthesis of bioactive macrocycles and related natural products. In this context, hundreds of valuable contributions have already been made in this area, and the present review is intended to provide the systematic assortment of diverse Prins cyclization strategies, covering the literature reports of the last twenty years (from 2000 to 2019), with an aim to give an overview on exciting advancements in this area and designing new strategies for the total synthesis of related natural products.

Abstract
The total synthesis of the 2-nitropyrrole natural products nitropyrrolins A and B and the formal synthesis of nitropyrrolin D are reported. The key 2-nitro-4-alkylpyrrole core was efficiently assembled by Sonogashira cross-coupling, with complete control of regioselectivity. An unusual carboxylative cyclization, sulfonylcarbamate formation, and base-promoted cleavage sequence enabled access to the key hydroxy ketone without affecting the protected 2-nitropyrrole unit. The total synthesis provides a general approach for preparation of the bioactive nitropyrrolin family of natural products.

Abstract
Two different mechanism pathways are observed for the reaction of allylsilyl alcohols 1 and aldehydes in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf). In the case of allylsilyl alcohols without allylic substituents, the reaction gives dioxaspirodecanes, which are the products of a tandem Sakurai-Prins cyclization. In contrast, allylsilyl alcohols with an allylic substituent (R(2)≠H) selectively provide oxepanes, thus corresponding to a direct silyl-Prins cyclization. Both types of product are obtained with excellent stereoselectivity. Theoretical studies have been performed to obtain some rationalization for the observed stereoselectivity.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of 3,4-dimethylidene oxacycles including oxolanes and oxepanes through Prins-type cyclization of hydroxy(allenylmethyl)silanes is described. We have shown that 2-substituted tetrahydrofuran derivatives could be produced by using this strategy although the 5-endo-trig cyclization mode is stereoelectronically disfavored. We also applied our method to the stereoselective synthesis of 2,7-cis-3,4-dimethylidene oxepanes, which were used for constructing more complex ring systems, such as polyether bicycles or tricycles.

Abstract
[Structure: see text] The stereoselective synthesis of methyl monate C 2 is described using as a key step an ene-intramolecular modified Sakurai cyclization (IMSC) reaction to prepare tetrahydropyran 5. An asymmetric allylic alkylation, followed by a cross-metathesis, enables the insertion of the right-hand side chain.

Abstract
Density functional theory was used to examine the solvation number and aggregation state of several alkyllithium compounds in clusters with tetrahydrofuran molecules coordinated to each lithium atom. We then made the microsolvation approximation and approximated the bulk free energy of solvation by the free energy of clustering with solvent molecules in the gas phase. The trends in the computed results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.

Abstract
Computational methods were used to determine the structure of dilithiodiamines and the effects of solvation by ethereal solvents. Solvation was examined by the use of microsolvation with explicit dimethyl ether or THF ligands and by the combined use of microsolvation and the IEFPCM continuum solvent model. It was determined that each of the compounds studied exists exclusively as a bridged intramolecular dimer, both in the gas phase and in solution. Thermodynamic properties were calculated at 200 and 298 K to estimate the effect of temperature on the cyclization energies. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the proposed intramolecular dimer structures.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] In this communication we demonstrate that Prins cyclization reactions occur under very mild conditions when cyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated acetals are employed as oxocarbenium ion progenitors and allylsilanes are used as nucleophiles. Cyclizations proceed efficiently inside Lewis acidic micelles in water, demonstrating that colloidal suspensions can protect highly electrophilic intermediates from hydrolysis. Reactions are experimentally facile and useful in the preparation of a variety of vinyl- and aryl-substituted tetrahydropyrans with excellent stereocontrol.

Abstract
DFT calculations were performed to determine the effects of ethereal solvents on the aggregation state of lithium dialkylaminoborohydrides (LABs). The calculations included dimerization energies in the gas phase, with continuum solvation only, microsolvation with coordinating ethereal ligands, and a combination of the microsolvation and continuum models. The continuum model alone overestimates the stability of the dimers, apparently due to the lack of steric effects from the coordinating ethereal ligands. The use of the combined microsolvation and continuum solvation models predicts lithium dimethylaminoborohydride to be a mixture of monomer and dimer in THF, and more sterically hindered lithium aminoborohydrides to exist primarily as monomers. The kinetics of amination of 1-chlorodecane by lithium dimethylaminoborohydride showed no detectable change in reaction rate with time, suggesting that the LAB reagent may exist primarily as a monomer in THF.
