Abstract
We have developed highly stereospecific rearrangements of silanol epoxides into 1'-silanoxy-tetrahydrofurans and 1'-silanoxy-tetrahydropyrans. Upon treatment with Ph3CBF4 and NaHCO3 in CH2Cl2, di-substituted trans-epoxide silanols rearrange into products with an erythro configuration; di-substituted cis-epoxide silanols give products with a threo configuration. We have used these reactions as key steps in the syntheses of (±)-solerone and (±)-muricatacin.

Abstract
Ascospiroketal B was isolated from a marine-derived fungus as a structurally unique polyketide possessing a rare tricyclic core including 5,5-spiroketal-γ-lactone. An asymmetric total synthesis of ent-ascospiroketal B was achieved using an original synthetic route. The synthesis included the stereoselective construction of 5,5-spiroketal for ascospiroketal B and stereocontrolled construction of a quaternary asymmetric carbon by rearrangement of a trisubstituted epoxide.

Abstract
Free radicals, which in the past were considered unruly chemical species, have become manageable and indispensable for synthetic organic chemistry. The unique nature of free radicals has allowed practitioners in organic synthesis to design flexible approaches to produce various materials ranging from small molecules to polymers. The present Personal Account describes the author's endeavors to create molecular complexity by the strategic use of free radicals, with an emphasis on the synthesis of bioactive natural products.

Abstract
An overview of recent progress on the total synthesis of acetogenins from Annonaceae during the past 12 years is provided. These include mono-tetrahydrofurans, adjacent bis-tetrahydrofurans, nonadjacent bis-tetrahydrofurans, tri-tetrahydrofurans, adjacent tetrahydrofuran-tetrahydropyrans, nonadjacent tetrahydrofuran-tetrahydropyrans, mono-tetrahydropyrans, and acetogenins containing only gamma-lactone. This review emphasizes only the first total synthesis of molecules of contemporary interest and syntheses that have helped to correct structures. In addition, some significant results on the novel synthesis and structure-activity relationship studies of annonaceous acetogenins are also introduced.

Abstract
A strategy for the synthesis of chiral 5-(1-hydroxyalk-2-enyl)-5H-furan-2-ones and its application to the total synthesis of (-)-muricatacin, in four steps and 37% overall yield from (R,R)-hexa-1,5-diene-3,4-diol, are described. The key synthetic step in this approach is a highly regioselective and stereoselective tandem ring-closing/cross metathesis reaction in which both lactone formation and alkyl chain extension are accomplished in an efficient one-pot process.

Abstract
(+)-Muconin (1), isolated from the leaves of Rollinia mucosa (Jacq.) Baill. (Annonaceae), is a sequential THF/THP-possessing acetogenin that exhibits potent and selective in vitro cytotoxicity toward pancreatic and breast tumor cell lines. In this study, a new route was established for obtaining (+)-muconin (1) starting with (-)-muricatacin (2), a compound recently synthesized via the novel alpha-C-H hydroxyalkylation and alpha'-C-H oxidation of tetrahydrofuran.
