Abstract
Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was activated by ultraviolet-A light-emitting diode (UVA-LED), resulting in efficient removal of various pollutants, including dye, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides, with pseudo-first-order rate constants of 0.0610-0.159 min-1. Comparatively, UVA-LED or Cr(VI) alone barely degraded selected pollutants. Both HO• and Cr(V) were produced in the UVA-LED/Cr(VI) system based on scavenging and probing experiments, UV-visible and electron spin resonance spectra analysis. HO• was demonstrated to be the dominant reactive species via stepwise regeneration of Cr(V) to Cr(VI). The quantum yield of HO• was determined to be 7.79 × 10-4 mol Es-1 at a Cr(VI) dosage of 0.5 mM and pH of 6.0. Additionally, the degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as a model compound decreased linearly as UVA-LED wavelengths increased from 365 to 405 nm, while SMX was barely degraded at visible light irradiation wavelength ranges (449-505 nm). SMX degradation efficiency increased from 71.0 % to 97.5 % as Cr(VI) dosage increased from 0.05 to 0.7 mM. pH displayed a negative impact on SMX degradation with its removal efficiency decreasing from 99.4 % to 13.3 % as pH increased from 3.0 to 9.0. This study first reported that HO• was generated via activation of Cr(VI) by UVA-LED, which is instructive for the removal of pollutants co-existed in chromium-containing wastewater.

Abstract
Recently, the technology for the remediation of Cr(VI) pollutant via bisulfite has been found to be effective for fast elimination of co-contaminants especially in acidic solution, where free radicals (i.e., sulfate and/or hydroxyl radicals) are proposed to act as dominant oxidants. Here, it was demonstrated that high-valent Cr intermediate played a primary role in the Cr(VI)/bisulfite system through applying methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) as a probe. PMSO was effectively transformed in the Cr(VI)/bisulfite system with appreciable generation of methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2) product, while PMSO was oxidized by free radicals to hydroxylated and/or polymeric products rather than PMSO2. The involvement of high-valent Cr species was further supported by the formation of 18O-labeled PMSO2 in 18O labeling experiments, where the incorporation of 18O from solvent water H218O into PMSO2 was likely resulted from competitive oxygen exchange of Cr-oxo species with water. The relative contribution of high valent Cr species versus free radicals was evaluated based on the yield of PMSO2, which was dependent on the solution chemistry such as [Cr(VI)]:[bisulfite] ratio and dissolved oxygen. This work advances the understanding of chromium chemistry involved in the Cr(VI)/bisulfite system. These findings have important implications on the application of this "waste control by waste" technology for environmental decontamination.

Abstract
Different isomers of (CrO3)n (n = 1-10) cluster units have been investigated using Density functional approach. Their stability and reactivity has been analyzed by plotting chemical potential and HOMO-LUMO gap as a function of cluster size. The CrO3, (CrO3)6 and (CrO3)9 are identified as the most reactive species. Reactivity of each atomic site in the cluster has been interpreted using local reactivity descriptors called Fukui Function plots. The clusters have been doped with sulfur by adding it as substitutional impurity, effect of sulfur doping has been understood by analyzing excitation energies and absorption wavelengths using time dependent-DFT(TDDFT) at CAM-B3LYP level of theory.

Abstract
Literature works reported that organic cocontaminants could be degraded during Cr(VI), a contaminant, reduction by sulfite (Cr(VI)/sulfite process). However, the role of Cr(V) and Cr(IV) intermediates in the Cr(VI)/sulfite process has been overlooked. In this study, we confirmed the generation of Cr(V) and proposed a new mechanism for the decomposition of coexisting organic contaminants during Cr(VI)/sulfite reactions occurring in oxygenated solutions at pHini 4.0 with the molar ratio of sulfite to Cr(VI) of 10.0. UV-visible and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra indicate that Cr(V) was the predominant Cr intermediates in oxygenated solutions, while Cr(IV) accumulated in deoxygenated solutions. The contribution of Cr(V) to the degradation of organic contaminants was verified by the EPR spectra collected at 2 K and using methyl phenyl sulfoxide as a probe compound. Both Cr(V) and SO4•- contributed to the decomposition of organic contaminants in oxygenated solutions, with the relative contributions from each species being strongly dependent on properties of the target organic cocontaminants. The key mechanisms responsible for Cr(V) accumulation were supported by DFT calculations, and the degradation kinetics of organic cocontaminants was simulated with the program Kintecus 6.51. This work advances the fundamental understanding of the oxidative transformation of coexisting organic contaminants in this process.

Abstract
A highly chemoselective phenol cross-coupling reaction catalyzed by a Cr-salen catalyst was developed. Kinetic studies showed that the oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(V) is the rate-determining step of the reaction. In addition, experimental stoichiometric analysis showed that a high valent Cr(V) species is the active catalyst for this process. The selectivity of the reaction was found to be determined by the cross-coupling carbon-carbon bond forming reaction, rather than any precoordination species. It appears that the lowest energy cross-coupling pathway requires a lesser degree of electronic reorganization in its transition state vs the lowest energy homocoupling pathway. This result was supported by stoichiometric Cr(V) kinetics, 13C kinetic isotope effects, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The understanding of the full landscape of this reaction allowed us to develop a general analysis to predict the regioselectivity of the cross-coupling reaction.

Abstract
The mechanism of oxidative decarboxylation of phenylsulfinylacetic acids (PSAA) by oxo(salen)Cr(V)+ ion in the presence of ligand oxides has been studied spectrophotometrically in acetonitrile medium. Addition of ligand oxides (LO) causes a red shift in the λ max values of oxo(salen) complexes and an increase in absorbance with the concentration of LO along with a clear isobestic point. The reaction shows first-order dependence on oxo(salen)-chromium(V)+ ion and fractional-order dependence on PSAA and ligand oxide. Michaelis-Menten kinetics without kinetic saturation was observed for the reaction. The order of reactivity among the ligand oxides is picoline N-oxide > pyridine N-oxide > triphenylphosphine oxide. The low catalytic activity of TPPO was rationalized. Both electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents in the phenyl ring of PSAA facilitate the reaction rate. The Hammett plots are non-linear upward type with negative ρ value for electron-donating substituents, (ρ - = -0.740 to -4.10) and positive ρ value for electron-withdrawing substituents (ρ + = +0.057 to +0.886). Non-linear Hammett plot is explained by two possible mechanistic scenarios, electrophilic and nucleophilic attack of oxo(salen)chromium(V)+-LO adduct on PSAA as the substituent in PSAA is changed from electron-donating to electron-withdrawing. The linearity in the log k vs. E ox plot confirms single-electron transfer (SET) mechanism for PSAAs with electron-donating substituents.

Abstract
UV-vis spectral titrations of a manganese(III) corrolazine complex [Mn(III)(TBP8Cz)] with HOTf in benzonitrile (PhCN) indicate mono- and diprotonation of Mn(III)(TBP8Cz) to give Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)) and [Mn(III)(OTf)(H2O)(TBP8Cz(H)2)][OTf] with protonation constants of 9.0 × 10(6) and 4.7 × 10(3) M(-1), respectively. The protonated sites of Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)) and [Mn(III)(OTf)(H2O)(TBP8Cz(H)2)][OTf] were identified by X-ray crystal structures of the mono- and diprotonated complexes. In the presence of HOTf, the monoprotonated manganese(III) corrolazine complex [Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H))] acts as an efficient photocatalytic catalyst for the oxidation of hexamethylbenzene and thioanisole by O2 to the corresponding alcohol and sulfoxide with 563 and 902 TON, respectively. Femtosecond laser flash photolysis measurements of Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)) and [Mn(III)(OTf)(H2O)(TBP8Cz(H)2)][OTf] in the presence of O2 revealed the formation of a tripquintet excited state, which was rapidly converted to a tripseptet excited state. The tripseptet excited state of Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)) reacted with O2 with a diffusion-limited rate constant to produce the putative Mn(IV)(O2(•-))(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)), whereas the tripseptet excited state of [Mn(III)(OTf)(H2O)(TBP8Cz(H)2)][OTf] exhibited no reactivity toward O2. In the presence of HOTf, Mn(V)(O)(TBP8Cz) can oxidize not only HMB but also mesitylene to the corresponding alcohols, accompanied by regeneration of Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)). This thermal reaction was examined for a kinetic isotope effect, and essentially no KIE (1.1) was observed for the oxidation of mesitylene-d12, suggesting a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism is operative in this case. Thus, the monoprotonated manganese(III) corrolazine complex, Mn(III)(OTf)(TBP8Cz(H)), acts as an efficient photocatalyst for the oxidation of HMB by O2 to the alcohol.

Abstract
In this article, we submit the description of synthesis and identification of manganese(II) complexes with pyrogenic nanosilica-immobilized (d av = 10 nm; S sp = 290 m(2)/g) hydroxyaldimine ligands [Formula: see text]: salicilaldiminopropyl (L1); 5-bromosalicilaldiminopropyl (L2); 2-hydroxynaphtaldiminopropyl (L3); 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldiminopropyl (L4); 2-hydroxy-3,5-dichloroacetophenoniminopropyl (L5); and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldiminopropyl (L6). The ligands and complexes were characterized by UV-VIS and IR spectrometry. Nanocomposites consisting of complexes [Formula: see text] showed a high catalytic activity in low-temperature ozone decomposition in the range of concentrations between 2.1 × 10(-6) and 8.4 × 10(-6) mol/l. The number of catalytic cycles increased for isostructural pseudotetrahedral complexes [Formula: see text] (L1-L5) in the following order: Mn(L3)2 >> Mn(L4)2 > Mn(L1)2 > Mn(L2)2 > Mn(L5)2. In the case of pseudooctahedral complexes with L6, the change of coordination polyhedral does not influence the kinetics and stoichiometric parameters of the reaction.

Abstract
Electron transfer from octamethylferrocene (Me8Fc) to the manganese(V) imidocorrole complex (tpfc)Mn(V)(NAr) [tpfc = 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole; Ar = 2,6-Cl2C6H3] proceeds efficiently to give an octamethylferrocenium ion (Me8Fc(+)) and [(tpfc)Mn(IV)(NAr)](-) in acetonitrile (MeCN) at 298 K. Upon the addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), further reduction of [(tpfc)Mn(IV)(NAr)](-) by Me8Fc gives (tpfc)Mn(III) and ArNH2 in deaerated MeCN. TFA also results in hydrolysis of (tpfc)Mn(V)(NAr) with residual water to produce a protonated manganese(V) oxocorrole complex ([(tpfc)Mn(V)(OH)](+)) in deaerated MeCN. [(tpfc)Mn(V)(OH)](+) is rapidly reduced by 2 equiv of Me8Fc in the presence of TFA to give (tpfc)Mn(III) in deaerated MeCN. In the presence of dioxygen (O2), (tpfc)Mn(III) catalyzes the two-electron reduction of O2 by Me8Fc with TFA in MeCN to produce H2O2 and Me8Fc(+). The rate of formation of Me8Fc(+) in the catalytic reduction of O2 follows zeroth-order kinetics with respect to the concentrations of Me8Fc and TFA, whereas the rate increases linearly with increasing concentrations of (tpfc)Mn(V)(NAr) and O2. These kinetic dependencies are consistent with the rate-determining step being electron transfer from (tpfc)Mn(III) to O2, followed by further proton-coupled electron transfer from Me8Fc to produce H2O2 and [(tpfc)Mn(IV)](+). Rapid electron transfer from Me8Fc to [(tpfc)Mn(IV)](+) regenerates (tpfc)Mn(III), completing the catalytic cycle. Thus, catalytic two-electron reduction of O2 by Me8Fc with (tpfc)Mn(V)(NAr) as a catalyst precursor proceeds via a Mn(III)/Mn(IV) redox cycle.

Abstract
A mononuclear Cr(v)-oxo complex, [CrV(O)(6-COO--tpa)](BF4)2 (1; 6-COO--tpa = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(6-carboxylato-2-pyridylmethyl)amine) was prepared through the reaction of a Cr(iii) precursor complex with iodosylbenzene as an oxidant. Characterization of 1 was achieved using ESI-MS spectrometry, electron paramagnetic resonance, UV-vis, and resonance Raman spectroscopies. The reduction potential (Ered) of 1 was determined to be 1.23 V vs. SCE in acetonitrile based on analysis of the electron-transfer (ET) equilibrium between 1 and a one-electron donor, [RuII(bpy)3]2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The reorganization energy (λ) of 1 was also determined to be 1.03 eV in ET reactions from phenol derivatives to 1 on the basis of the Marcus theory of ET. The smaller λ value in comparison with that of an Fe(iv)-oxo complex (2.37 eV) is caused by the small structural change during ET due to the dπ character of the electron-accepting LUMO of 1. When benzyl alcohol derivatives (R-BA) with different oxidation potentials were employed as substrates, corresponding aldehydes were obtained as the 2e--oxidized products in moderate yields as determined from 1H NMR and GC-MS measurements. One-step UV-vis spectral changes were observed in the course of the oxidation reactions of BA derivatives by 1 and a kinetic isotope effect (KIE) was observed in the oxidation reactions for deuterated BA derivatives at the benzylic position as substrates. These results indicate that the rate-limiting step is a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from substrate to 1. In sharp contrast, in the oxidation of trimethoxy-BA (Eox = 1.22 V) by 1, trimethoxy-BA radical cation was observed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Thus, it was revealed that the mechanism of the oxidation reaction changed from one-step PCET to stepwise ET-proton transfer (ET/PT), depending on the redox potentials of R-BA.

Abstract
The synthesis of a series of Ni(II) -salen-based complexes with the general formula of [Ni(H2 L)] (H4 L=R(2) -N,N'-bis[R(1) -5-(4'-benzoic acid)salicylidene]; H4 L1: R(2) =2,3-diamino-2,3-dimethylbutane and R(1) =H; H4 L2: R(2) =1,2-diaminoethane and R(1) =tert-butyl and H4 L3: R(2) =1,2-diaminobenzene and R(1) =tert-butyl) is presented. Their electronic structure and self-assembly was studied. The organic ligands of the salen complexes are functionalized with peripheral carboxylic groups for driving molecular self-assembly through hydrogen bonding. In addition, other substituents, that is, tert-butyl and diamine bridges (2,3-diamino-2,3-dimethylbutane, 1,2-diaminobenzene or 1,2-diaminoethane), were used to tune the two-dimensional (2D) packing of these building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the spatial distribution of the LUMOs is affected by these substituents, in contrast with the HOMOs, which remain unchanged. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows that the three complexes self-assemble into three different 2D nanoarchitectures at the solid-liquid interface on graphite. Two structures are porous and one is close-packed. These structures are stabilized by hydrogen bonds in one dimension, while the 2D interaction is governed by van der Waals forces and is tuned by the nature of the substituents, as confirmed by theoretical calculations. As expected, the total dipolar moment is minimized.

Abstract
Oxygen-atom transfer reactions of metalloporphyrin species play an important role in biochemical and synthetic oxidation reactions. An emerging theme in this chemistry is that spin-state changes can play important roles, and a 'two-state' reactivity model has been extensively applied especially in iron porphyrin systems. Herein we explore the gas-phase oxygen-atom transfer chemistry of meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (TPFPP) chromium complexes, as well as some other tetradentate macrocyclic ligands. Electrospray ionization in concert with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry has been used to characterize and observe reactivity of the ionic species [(TPFPP)Cr(III)](+) (1) and [(TPFPP)Cr(V)O](+) (2). These are attractive systems to examine the effects of spin-state change on oxygen-atom transfer because the d(1) Cr(V) species are doublets, while the Cr(III) complexes have quartet ground states with high-lying doublet excited states. In the gas phase, [(TPFPP)Cr(III)](+) forms adducts with a variety of neutral donors, but O-atom transfer is only observed for NO(2). Pyridine N-oxide adducts of 1 do yield 2 upon collision-induced dissociation (CID), but the ethylene oxide, DMSO, and TEMPO analogues do not. [(TPFPP)Cr(V)O](+) is shown by its reactivity and by CID experiments to be a terminal metal-oxo with a single, vacant coordination site. It also displays limited reaction chemistry, being deoxygenated only by the very potent reductant P(OMe)(3). In general, [(TPFPP)Cr(V)O](+) species are much less reactive than the Fe and Mn analogues. Thermochemical analysis of the reactions points toward the involvement of spin issues in the lower observed reactivity of the chromium complexes.
