Abstract
AbstractA total synthesis of lamellarins U and A3 is described. The synthesis features the interruption of a halogen dance reaction of a metalated α,β-dibromopyrrole. The pyrrolylmagnesium reagent, generated by deprotonative metalation by using (TMP)MgCl·LiCl (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) as the base, was transmetalated to the corresponding organozinc species without causing the halogen dance reaction, which underwent a Negishi coupling to incorporate an aryl group onto the pyrrole ring. The arylated α,β-dibromopyrrole was then converted into lamellarins U and A3 through an α-selective halogen–magnesium exchange followed by carboxylation and subsequent palladium-mediated cyclization. The late-stage introduction of another aryl group was performed using a Kosugi–Migita–Stille coupling to provide lamellarins U and A3.

Abstract
The Grignard reagent, iPrMgCl and its lithium chloride-enhanced 'turbo' derivative iPrMgCl⋅LiCl have been employed to investigate the single iodo/magnesium exchange reactions of the trisubstituted arenes, 2,5-diiodo-N,N-diisopropylbenzamide 1, 1,4-diiodo-2-methoxybenzene 2, and 1,4-diiodo-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene 3. These three arenes themselves were initially prepared by a double ortho-, meta'-deprotonation of N,N-diisopropylbenzamide, anisole and (trifluoromethyl)benzene, respectively, using the sodium magnesiate reagent [Na4 Mg2 (TMP)6 (nBu)2 ] (where TMP is 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide), and subsequent electrophilic quenching with iodine/THF solution. Thus, by following a combined deprotonation and magnesium/halogen exchange strategy, the simple monosubstituted arenes can be converted to trisubstituted diiodoarenes, which can ultimately be transformed into the corresponding mono-magnesiated arenes, in THF at -40 °C, within seconds in good yields. The other functional group (OMe, NiPr2 or CF3 respectively) present on the di-iodoarenes helps direct the exchange reaction to the ortho position, whereas subsequent addition of different electrophiles permits the preparation of hetero-poly-functional-arenes, with three different substituents in their structure. Intriguingly, if water is used as the electrophile, a new and facile route to prepare meta-substituted arenes, which cannot be easily obtained by conventional processes, is forthcoming. In contrast to directed ortho-metalation (DoM) chemistry, this reaction sequence can be thought of as InDirect meta-Metalation (IDmM). The scope of the chemistry has been tested further by exposing the initial unreacted iodo-functionality at the meta-position to a second Mg/I-exchange reaction and subsequent functionalization.

Abstract
AbstractSelective trapping of (4,5-dibromo-2-thienyl)lithium, known to undergo halogen dance, was achieved in a flow microreactor. This transient thienyllithium, generated by mixing 2,3-dibromothiophene and lithium diisopropylamide at –78 °C for 1.6 seconds, reacted with benzaldehyde. The reaction system is also applicable to other carbonyl compounds to afford the corresponding adducts in good yields. Moreover, the established conditions permit the conversion of 2,5-dibromothiophene into a mixture of the two constitutional isomers. The contrasting results are discussed on the basis of the reaction pathway.

Abstract
A pathway to a range of diverse heterocycles was developed using a nucleophilic cyclization strategy. Lactams and ene-imines are accessed in a few steps from a common precursor, and these moieties are further elaborated to directly provide pyrroles or pyridines with extended conjugation. Reaction conditions are mild, and a broad range of structural types are available within a few steps.

Abstract
Protein misfolding diseases are characterized by deposition of protein aggregates, and optical ligands for molecular characterization of these disease-associated structures are important for understanding their potential role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes (LCOs) have proven useful for optical identification of a broader subset of disease-associated protein aggregates than conventional ligands, such as thioflavin T and Congo red. Herein, the molecular requirements for achieving LCOs able to detect nonthioflavinophilic Aβ aggregates or non-congophilic prion aggregates, as well as spectrally discriminate Aβ and tau aggregates, were investigated. An anionic pentameric LCO was subjected to chemical engineering by: 1) replacing thiophene units with selenophene or phenylene moieties, or 2) alternating the anionic substituents along the thiophene backbone. In addition, two asymmetric tetrameric ligands were generated. Overall, the results from this study identified conformational freedom and extended conjugation of the conjugated backbone as crucial determinants for obtaining superior thiophene-based optical ligands for sensitive detection and spectral assignment of disease-associated protein aggregates.

Abstract
A Rh-catalyzed reaction of C(60) and C(70) with organoboron compounds is described. This new catalytic method enables introduction of various organic groups onto C(60) and C(70). [Rh(cod)(MeCN)(2)]BF(4) proved to be the most effective catalyst in terms of productivity and selectivity. The reaction generally proceeds with a high regioselectivity and in a mono-addition selective manner. It was found that water is an essential additive to promote the reaction. By X-ray crystal structure analysis, we have confirmed the reaction site of organometallic-based hydroarylation of C(70) for the first time. Various functional fullerenes, such as fullerene-tagged amino acids and fullerene-capped π systems, can be synthesized. The X-ray crystal structure of biphenyl-attached C(60) revealed an interesting opportunity for the well-organized alignment of bucky balls by taking advantage of CH-π interactions.

AbstractAddition of pinacolborane (HBO2C2Me4) to 2-iodoaniline can be catalyzed using a number of palladium complexes, including [(t-Bu)2PCl]2PdCl2 (PXPd), to give the corresponding boronate ester 2-H2NC6H4(BO2C2Me4) in excellent yields. The PXPd system could also be used in the catalyzed borylation of substituted anilines to give the corresponding aminoboronate esters in moderate to high yields.

Abstract
Iridium-catalyzed borylation has been applied to various substituted thiophenes to synthesize poly-functionalized thiophenes in good to excellent yields. Apart from common functionalities compatible with iridium-catalyzed borylations, additional functional group tolerance to acyl (COMe), and trimethylsilyl (TMS) groups was also observed. High regioselectivities were observed in borylation of 3-and 2,5-di-substituted thiophenes. Electrophilic aromatic C-H/C-Si bromination on thiophene boronate esters is shown to take place without breaking the C-B bond, and one-pot C-H borylation/Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling has been accomplished on 2- and 3-borylated thiophenes.
