Abstract
An unsymmetrical guanidine-cyclopropenimine proton sponge DAGUN and the related BF2 -chelate DAGBO are reported. Insight into the structural, electronic, bonding and photophysical properties of these two molecules are presented. Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal the protonated form of DAGUN possesses an intramolecular N⋅⋅⋅H-N hydrogen bond which affords a high experimental pKBH+ of 26.6 (computed=26.3). Photophysical studies show that in solution DAGUN displays a green emission at 534 nm, with a large Stokes shift of 235 nm (14,718 cm-1 ). In contrast, the conjugate acid DAGUN-H+ is only weakly emissive due to attenuated intramolecular charge transfer. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that DAGBO contains a stable tetracoordinate boronium cation, reminiscent of the well-established BODIPY family of dyes. In solution, DAGBO exhibits a strong blue emission at 450 nm coupled with a large Stokes shift (Δλ=158 nm, Δν=11,957 cm-1 ) and quantum yield of 62 %, upon excitation at 293 nm. DAGBO sets the stage as the first entry into a new class of boron-difluoride diaminonaphthalenes (BOFDANs) that represent highly fluorescent and tunable next-generation dyes with future promise for biosensing and bioimaging applications.

Abstract
Boron-dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are one of the most important fluorescent materials. Despite their potential unique properties, however, B,B-fluoro-organo BODIPYs (BFR-BODIPYs) possessing an organo group (R) on the boron center have not been studied in detail, due in part to challenges related to their synthesis. In this paper, a convergent synthesis of BFR-BODIPYs operative under mild conditions is reported. Conversions of the thus-synthesized functionalized BFR-BODIPYs by cross-coupling, condensation, and SN2 reactions at the R group are also demonstrated.

Abstract
This feature article summarizes the different strategies for the synthesis of [a]-benzo-fused BODIPYs that have been reported in the literature until 2018. These π-extended BODIPYs are promising fluorophores for bio-imaging and organic photovoltaic applications due to both their attractive photophysical properties in the near-infrared area and their higher (photo)chemical stability compared to conventional bis-styryl derivatives. The four main strategies described in this review can be used to access either directly the expected [a]-benzo-fused BODIPYs or through the di-/tetra-hydroisoindole.

Abstract
A series of β,β'-bicyclo-3,5-diaryl-BODIPYs were synthesized from the corresponding β,β'-bicyclo-3,5-diiodo-BODIPYs (1a,b) via Pd(0)-mediated Suzuki cross-coupling reactions in 82-92% yields. Subsequent aromatization with DDQ afforded the corresponding β,β'-dibenzo-aryl-BODIPYs, which showed red-shifted absorptions and emissions in the near-IR range. The dibenzo-appended BODIPYs showed characteristic 1H-, 13C-, 11B- and 19F-NMR shifts, and nearly planar conformations by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
In this perspective, we present an overview of the determination of excited-state properties of "real-life" dyes, and notably of their optical absorption and emission spectra, performed during the last decade with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We discuss the results obtained with both vertical and adiabatic (vibronic) approximations, choosing relevant examples for several series of dyes. These examples include reproducing absorption wavelengths of numerous families of coloured molecules, understanding the specific band shape of amino-anthraquinones, optimising the properties of dyes used in solar cells, mimicking the fluorescence wavelengths of fluorescent brighteners and BODIPY dyes, studying optically active biomolecules and photo-induced proton transfer, as well as improving the properties of photochromes.

Abstract
A benzannulated boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY, bDIP) molecule exhibiting strong absorption at 640 nm was synthesized. The organic dye was used in an organic solar cell as the electron donor with C60 as the acceptor. The BODIPY dye demonstrated the best performance in lamellar architecture (indium tin oxide (ITO)/bDIP/C60/bathocuproine/Al), giving power conversion efficiency up to 4.5% with short-circuit current (JSC) of 8.7 mA/cm(2) and an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.81 V. Neutron reflectivity experiments were performed on the bilayer film to investigate the thickness dependence of JSC. A 13 nm mixed layer was found to be present at the donor/acceptor interface in the bilayer device, formed when the C60 was deposited onto a room temperature bDIP film. Planar-mixed heterojunction devices were fabricated to understand the extent of spontaneous mixing between the donor and acceptor materials. The native mixed region in the bilayer device was shown to most resemble 1:3 bDIP:C60 layer in the structure: (ITO/bDIP/bDIP:C60 blend/C60/bathocuproine/Al).

Abstract
Catalytic hydrogenation of dibenzyl 5-dipyrroketone-2,9-dicarboxylates followed by decarboxylative iodination affords a 2,9-diiododipyrroketone which gives a 2,5,9-trichlorodipyrromethene hydrochloride after nucleophilic addition/elimination, with adventitious chloride to replace the two iodide groups. Treatment with BF3·Et2O gives a 3,5,8-trichloro-BODIPY that readily undergoes regioselective Stille coupling at the 8-position, or homo/mixed couplings at the 3,8- or 3,5- and 8-positions. Stepwise and controlled replacement of the 3,5- and 8-chlorine atoms using Stille reagents results in formation of a completely unsymmetrical trisubstituted BODIPY. Several examples of unsymmetrical BODIPYs were synthesized and characterized using this methodology. Structure features of new BODIPYs are discussed within the context of 14 new X-ray structures, and photophysical parameters of all new BODIPY compounds are reported and discussed.

Abstract
A series of novel non-symmetrical coumarin-fused BODIPY dyes were synthesised. Their absorption and emission properties are strongly influenced by substitution in the coumarin moiety. Diethylamino-substituted dyes showed near-IR emission with large Stokes shifts (up to 144 nm) and good fluorescence quantum yields.

Abstract
This review article presents the most recent developments in the use of materials based on dipyrromethene (DPM) and azadipyrromethenes (ADPM) for organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications. These chromophores and their corresponding BF2-chelated derivatives BODIPY and aza-BODIPY, respectively, are well known for fluorescence-based applications but are relatively new in the field of photovoltaic research. This review examines the variety of relevant designs, synthetic methodologies and photophysical studies related to materials that incorporate these porphyrinoid-related dyes in their architecture. The main idea is to inspire readers to explore new avenues in the design of next generation small-molecule and bulk-heterojunction solar cell (BHJSC) OPV materials based on DPM chromophores. The main concepts are briefly explained, along with the main challenges that are to be resolved in order to take full advantage of solar energy.

Abstract
Several classes of small organic molecules exhibit properties that make them suitable for fluorescence in vivo imaging. The most promising candidates are cyanines, squaraines, boron dipyrromethenes, porphyrin derivatives, hydroporphyrins, and phthalocyanines. The recent designing and synthetic efforts have been dedicated to improving their optical properties (shift the absorption and emission maxima toward longer wavelengths and increase the brightness) as well as increasing their stability and water solubility. The most notable advances include development of encapsulated cyanine dyes with increased stability and water solubility, squaraine rotaxanes with increased stability, long-wavelength-absorbing boron dipyrromethenes, long-wavelength-absorbing porphyrin and hydroporphyrin derivatives, and water-soluble phthalocyanines. Recent advances in luminescence and bioluminescence have made self-illuminating fluorophores available for in vivo applications. Development of new types of hydroporphyrin energy-transfer dyads gives the promise for further advances in in vivo multicolor imaging.

Abstract
Herein, we present three imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2(3 H)-one derivatives that are diamagnetic in solution, but paramagnetic in the solid state, possibly owing to a stacking-induced formation of phenoxide-type radicals. Notably, a larger bathochromic shift of the absorption (even up to the near- infrared region) of these three compounds was observed in the solid state than in solution, which was attributable to the ordered columnar stacking arrangements or their single-electron character as radicals in the solid state. Interestingly, compared to that in solution, (E)-3-(pyridin-4'-ylmethylene)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine 2(3 H)-one displayed a largely red-shifted emission (centered at 660 nm, with tailing above 800 nm) in the solid state. A larger bathochromic shift (260 nm) of the emission is an indication of better order and tight stacking in the solid state, which is brought about by the rigid and polar acceptor. These three compounds also reveal different magnetic susceptibilities at 300 K, thus implying that they possess various columnar stacking structures. Most interestingly, these three radicals exhibit unusual ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transitions, which can be attributed to anisotropic contraction and non-uniform slippage of the columnar stacking chains.
