Photoinduced Cyclization of 3-Acyl-2-halo-1-[(ω-phenylethynyl)alkyl]indoles to Azaheterocyclo[1,2,3-lm]-Fused Benzo[c]carbazoles

Cascade hydroarylation/Diels-Alder cycloaddition of alkynylindoles with electron-deficient alkynes and alkenes

Herein, a novel cascade gold(I)-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkynylindoles and subsequent Diels-Alder cycloaddition with electron-deficient alkynes and alkenes is described. A variety of azepino-fused hydrocarbazoles and carbazoles were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. Key features of this methodology are low catalyst loadings, high regioselectivity, broad functional group tolerances, access to important heterocycles, and 100% atom economy.

Access to Azepino-Annulated Benzo[c]carbazoles Enabled by Gold-Catalyzed Hydroarylation of Alkynylindoles and Subsequent Oxidative Cyclization

Herein, we report a facile and efficient synthetic method to construct azepino[1,2-a]indoles through a novel gold(I)-catalyzed intramolecular hydroarylation of alkynylindoles. A wide range of functional groups can be well tolerated in this transformation, and the corresponding highly functionalized azepino[1,2-a]indole skeletons were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. Subsequent oxidation of the products gave the interesting and valuable polycyclic carbazoles, which were widely used as the key building blocks in materials science.

Rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular cascade sequence for the formation of fused carbazole-annulated medium-sized rings by cleavage of C(sp2)-H/C(sp3)-H bonds

The rhodium(iii)-catalyzed intramolecular annulation of alkyne-tethered 3-(indol-3-yl)-3-oxopropanenitriles for the synthesis of fused carbazole scaffolds via C-H activation has been developed. A series of six-, seven-, and eight-membered hydroazepino[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles were achieved. This reaction proceeded under mild reaction conditions and with a broad substrate scope. The reaction involved sequential cleavage of C(sp2)-H/C(sp3)-H bonds and annulation with the tethered alkyne.

Studies toward the synthesis of the epoxykinamycin FL-120B': discovery of a decarbonylative photocyclization

Photo-Friedel-Crafts acylation of a naphthoquinone was attempted in an effort to access a diazobenzofluorenone en route to the epoxykinamycin natural product FL-120B'. Photoirradiation of the naphthoquinone substrate which resulted in the unexpected formation of a tetracyclic naphthofuran via a decarbonylative photocyclization process is described.
