Structural and Solvent Effects on the C–S Bond Cleavage in Aryl Triphenylmethyl Sulfide Radical Cations

Competition Between Cα -S and Cα -Cβ Bond Cleavage in β-Hydroxysulfoxides Cation Radicals Generated by Photoinduced Electron Transfer†

A kinetic and product study of the 3‐cyano‐N‐methyl‐quinolinium photoinduced monoelectronic oxidation of a series of β‐hydroxysulfoxides has been carried out to investigate the competition between C_α‐S and C_α‐C_β bond cleavage within the corresponding cation radicals. Laser flash photolysis experiments unequivocally established the formation of sulfoxide cation radicals showing their absorption band (λ_max ≈ 520 nm) and that of 3‐CN‐NMQ^• (λ_max ≈ 390 nm). Steady‐state photolysis experiments suggest that, in contrast to what previously observed for alkyl phenyl sulfoxide cation radicals that exclusively undergo C_α‐S bond cleavage, the presence of a β‐hydroxy group makes, in some cases, the C_α‐C_β scission competitive. The factors governing this competition seem to depend on the relative stability of the fragments formed from the two bond scissions. Substitution of the β‐OH group with ‐OMe did not dramatically change the reactivity pattern of the cation radicals thus suggesting that the observed favorable effect of the hydroxy group on the C_α‐C_β bond cleavage mainly resides on its capability to stabilize the carbocation formed upon this scission.

A combined multivariate and theoretical analysis of coupled XAS/UV–Vis data was proven to be an innovative method to obtain direct structural and mechanistic evidence for bimolecular reactions in solution involving organic substrates.

Conjugate Addition of Perfluoroarenes to α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyls Enabled by an Alkoxide-Hydrosilane System: Implication of a Radical Pathway

Conjugate addition of organometallic reagents to α,β-unsaturated carbonyls is a key strategy for the construction of carbon-carbon bond in organic synthesis. Although direct C-H addition to unsaturated bonds via transition metal catalysis is explored in recent years, electron-deficient arenes that do not bear directing groups continue to be challenging. Herein we disclose the first example of a conjugate addition of perfluoroarenes to α,β-unsaturated carbonyls enabled by an alkoxide-hydrosilane system. The reaction is convenient to carry out at room temperature over a broad range of substrates and reactants to furnish synthetically versatile products in high to excellent yields. Mechanistic experiments in combination with computational studies suggest that a radical pathway is most likely operative in this transformation. The hypervalent silicate and silanide species, which are relevant to the proposed mechanism, were observed experimentally by NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Reversible Bond/Cation-Coupled Electron Transfer on Phenylenediamine-Based Rhodamine B and Its Application on Electrochromism

A biomimetic system on reversible bond-coupled electron transfer (BCET) has been proposed and investigated in a switchable Rh-N molecule with redox active subunits. We discover that energy barrier of C-N bond breaking is reduced dramatically to less than 1/7 (from 40.4 to 5.5 kcal/mol), and 1/3 of the oxidation potential is simultaneously lowered (from 0.67 to 0.43 V) with the oxidation of Rh-N. The concept, cation-coupled electron transfer (CCET), is highly recommended by analyzing existing proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) and metal coupled electron transfer (MCET) along with aforementioned BCET, which have same characteristic of transferring positive charges, such as proton, metal ion, and organic cation. Molecular switch can be controlled directly by electricity through BCET process. Solid electrochromic device was fabricated with extremely high coloration efficiency (720 cm²/C), great reversibility (no degradation for 600 cycles), and quick respond time (30 ms).

Electron Transfer Mechanism in the Oxidation of Aryl 1-Methyl-1-phenylethyl Sulfides Promoted by Nonheme Iron(IV)-Oxo Complexes: The Rate of the Oxygen Rebound Process

The oxidation of aryl 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl sulfides promoted by the nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complexes [(N4Py)Fe^IV═O]²⁺ and [(Bn-TPEN)Fe^IV═O]²⁺ occurs by an electron transfer-oxygen rebound (ET-OT) mechanism leading to aryl 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl sulfoxides accompanied by products derived from C_α-S fragmentation of sulfide radical cations (2-phenyl-2-propanol and diaryl disulfides). For the first time, the rate constants for the oxygen rebound process (k_OT), which are in the range of <0.8 × 10⁴ to 3.5 × 10⁴ s^-1, were determined from the fragmentation rate constants of the radical cations (k_f) and the S oxidation/fragmentation product ratios.

Oxidation of Aryl Diphenylmethyl Sulfides Promoted by a Nonheme Iron(IV)-Oxo Complex: Evidence for an Electron Transfer-Oxygen Transfer Mechanism

The oxidation of a series of aryl diphenylmethyl sulfides (4-X-C6H4SCH(C6H5)2, where X = OCH3 (1), X = CH3 (2), X = H (3), and X = CF3 (4)) promoted by the nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complex [(N4Py)Fe(IV)═O](2+) occurs by an electron transfer-oxygen transfer (ET-OT) mechanism as supported by the observation of products (diphenylmethanol, benzophenone, and diaryl disulfides) deriving from α-C-S and α-C-H fragmentation of radical cations 1(+•)-4(+•), formed besides the S-oxidation products (aryl diphenylmethyl sulfoxides). The fragmentation/S-oxidation product ratios regularly increase through a decrease in the electron-donating power of the aryl substituents, that is, by increasing the fragmentation rate constants of the radical cations as indicated by a laser flash photolysis (LFP) study of the photochemical oxidation of 1-4 carried out in the presence of N-methoxyphenanthridinium hexafluorophosphate (MeOP(+)PF6(-)).

N-alkoxyheterocycles as irreversible photooxidants

Irreversible photooxidation based on N-O bond fragmentation is demonstrated for N-methoxyheterocycles in both the singlet and triplet excited state manifolds. The energetic requirements for bond fragmentation are studied in detail. Bond fragmentation in the excited singlet manifold is possible for ππ* singlet states with energies significantly larger than the N-O bond dissociation energy of ca 55 kcal mol(-1). For the nπ* triplet states, N-O bond fragmentation does not occur in the excited state for orbital overlap and energetic reasons. Irreversible photooxidation occurs in the singlet states by bond fragmentation followed by electron transfer. Irreversible photooxidation occurs in the triplet states via bimolecular electron transfer to the donor followed by bond fragmentation. Using these two sensitization schemes, donors can be irreversibly oxidized with oxidation potentials ranging from ca 1.6-2.2 V vs SCE. The corresponding N-ethylheterocycles are characterized as conventional reversible photooxidants in their triplet states. The utility of these sensitizers is demonstrated by irreversibly generating the guanosine radical cation in buffered aqueous solution.

Mesolysis of radical anions of tetra-, penta-, and hexaphenylethanes

A central carbon–carbon (C–C) σ bond dissociation of polyphenylethane radical anions (Ph(n)E•-, n = 3–6), mesolysis, was investigated by the transient absorption measurement during pulse radiolysis of Ph(n)E in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. The charge resonance (CR) band of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane radical anion (1,1,2,2-Ph4E•-) was observed in the near-infrared region immediately after an electron pulse to be attributed to the intramolecular dimer radical anion. The CR band disappeared with simultaneous formation of two absorption bands at 330 and 460 nm corresponding to diphenylmethyl radical and diphenylmethyl anion, respectively, indicating the occurrence of the mesolysis in 1,1,2,2-Ph4E•-. During pulse radiolysis of 1,1,1,2,2,2-hexaphenylethane (Ph6E), an absorption band of triphenylmethyl radical was observed at 340 nm immediately after an electron pulse. It is suggested that one electron attachment to Ph6E is followed by the subsequent rapid C–C σ bond dissociation. Formation of intramolecular dimer radical anions in Ph(n)E•- such as 1,1,2-triphenylethane (Ph3E), 1,1,1,2-tetraphenylethane (1,1,1,2-Ph4E), and 1,1,1,2,2-pentaphenylethane (Ph5E) was also studied together with the subsequent mesolysis. The mesolysis of Ph(n)E•- is discussed in terms of charge delocalization in the intramolecular dimer radical anions and the central C–C σ bond as well as bond dissociation energy of the central C–C σ bond of Ph(n)E•-.
