Abstract
Cyclodextrin poly-functionalization has fueled progress in their use in multiple applications such as enzyme mimicry, but also in the polymer sciences, luminescence, as sensors or for biomedical applications. However, regioselective access to a given pattern of functions on β-cyclodextrin is still very limited. We uncover a new orienting group, the thioacetate, that expands the toolbox available for cyclodextrin poly-hetero-functionalization using diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL-H) promoted debenzylation. The usefulness of this group is illustrated in the first synthesis of a precisely hepta-hetero-functionalized β-cyclodextrin. By way of comparison, a random hepta-functionalization would give 117655 different molecules. This synthesis is not simply the vain quest for the Holy Grail of CD hetero-functionalization, but it illustrates the versatility of the DIBAL-H oriented hetero-functionalization strategy, opening the way to a multitude of useful functionalization patterns for new practical applications.

Abstract
Per(6-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrin derivatives are well-known as synthetic intermediates that enable the selective mono-, partial, or perfunctionalization of the secondary face of the macrocycles. Although silylation of the primary rim is readily achieved by treatment with tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride in the presence of pyridine (either alone or mixed with a co-solvent), the reaction typically results in a mixture containing both under- and oversilylated byproducts that are difficult to remove. To address this challenge in preparing a pure product in high yield, we describe an approach that centers on the addition of a controlled excess of silylating agent to avoid the presence of undersilylated species, followed by the removal of oversilylated species by column chromatography elution with carefully designed solvent mixtures. This methodology works well for 6-, 7-, and 8-member rings (α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins, respectively) and has enabled us to repeatedly prepare up to ⁓35 g of ≥98% pure product (as determined by HPLC) in 3 d. We also provide procedures for lower-scale reactions, as well as an example of how the β-cyclodextrin derivative can be used for functionalization of the secondary face of the molecule.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) have long occupied a prominent position in most pharmaceutical laboratories as "off-the-shelve" tools to manipulate the pharmacokinetics of a broad range of active principles, due to their unique combination of biocompatibility and inclusion abilities. The development of precision chemical methods for their selective functionalization, in combination with "click" multiconjugation procedures, have further leveraged the nanoscaffold nature of these oligosaccharides, creating a direct link between the glyco and the nano worlds. CDs have greatly contributed to understand and exploit the interactions between multivalent glycodisplays and carbohydrate-binding proteins (lectins) and to improve the drug-loading and functional properties of nanomaterials through host-guest strategies. The whole range of capabilities can be enabled through self-assembly, template-assisted assembly or covalent connection of CD/glycan building blocks. This review discusses the advancements made in this field during the last decade and the amazing variety of functional glyconanomaterials empowered by the versatility of the CD component.

Abstract
Reported is the first stereoselective method for β-xylulofuranosylation, which employs 3,4-O-xylylene-protected thioglycoside donors. For most acceptors, the best results were observed with a donor (8) that possesses both the xylylene group and a benzoate ester at O-1. To demonstrate its utility, the methodology was applied to the first synthesis of the pentasaccharide repeating unit from the lipopolysaccharide O-antigen of Yersinia enterocolitica serovars O:5/O:5,27, a structure containing two β-xylulofuranose residues.

Abstract
The first examples of iminosugar-type 2-deoxy(thio)glycoside mimetics are reported. The key step is the activation of a bicyclic iminoglycal carbamate to generate a highly reactive acyliminium cation. Cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate efficiently promoted the formation of 2-deoxy S-glycosides in the presence of thiols, probably by in situ generation of catalytic HNO3, with complete α-stereoselectivity. Cooperative phosphoric acid/Schreiner's thiourea organocatalysis proved better suited for generating 2-deoxy O-glycosides, significantly broadening the scope of the approach.

Abstract
The presence of a doubly-linked naphthylene clip at the O-2I and O-3II positions in the secondary ring of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) derivatives promoted their self-assembly into head-to-head supramolecular dimers in which the aromatic modules act either as cavity extension walls (if the naphthalene moiety is 1,8-disubstituted) or as folding screens that separate the individual βCD units (if 2,3-disubstituted). Dimer architecture is governed by the conformational properties of the monomer constituents, as determined by NMR, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and computational techniques. In a second supramolecular organization level, the topology of the assembly directs host-guest interactions and, reciprocally, guest inclusion impacts the stability of the supramolecular edifice. Thus, inclusion of adamantane carboxylate, a well-known βCD cavity-fitting guest, was found to either preserve the dimeric arrangement, leading to multicomponent species, or elicit dimer disruption. The ensemble of results highlights the potential of the approach to program self-organization and external stimuli responsiveness of CD devices in a controlled manner while keeping full diastereomeric purity.

Abstract
The topology of β-cyclodextrin can be molded, from toroidal to ovoid basket-shaped, by the installation of an o- or m-xylylene moiety connecting two consecutive d-glucopyranosyl units through the secondary O-2(I) and O-3(II) positions. This strategy can be exploited advantageously to precast the cavity for preferential inclusion of globular or planar guests as well as to privilege dimeric or monomeric species in water solution.

Abstract
We have developed an efficient protocol for the synthesis of C-glycosylated phenanthridines. Tetrafuranos-4-yl and pentapyranos-5-yl radicals, generated from K2S2O8-mediated oxidative decarboxylation of furan- and pyranuronic acids, undergo attack to 2-isocyanodiphenyls and ensuing homolytic aromatic substitution to provide diverse C-glycosylated phenanthridines in satisfactory yields without resort to transition metals. This reaction tolerates various functional groups, and enables ready synthesis of complex oligosaccharide-based phenanthridines. The C-glycosylated phenanthridine derived from β-cyclodextrin has been prepared, which might be potential in medicinal and biological chemistry due to its flexible conformation.

Abstract
A simple and efficient radical C-H functionalization to access modified cyclodextrins (CDs) has been developed. The well-defined conformation of glycosidic and aglyconic bonds in α-, β-, and γ-CDs favors the intramolecular 1,8-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) promoted by the 6I-O-yl radical, which abstracts regioselectively the hydrogen at C5II of the contiguous pyranose. The C5II-radical evolves by a polar crossover mechanism to a stable 1,3,5-trioxocane ring between two adjacent glucoses or alternatively triggers the inversion of one α-d-glucose into a 5-C-acetoxy-β-l-idose unit possessing a 1C4 conformation. The 6I,IV- and 6I,III-diols of α- and β-CDs behave similarly to the monoalcohols, forming mostly compounds originating from two 1,8-HAT consecutive processes. In the case of 6I,II-diols the proximity of the two 6-O-yl radicals in adjacent sugar units allows the formation of unique lactone rings within the CD framework via a 1,8-HAT-β-scission tandem mechanism. X-ray diffraction carried out on the crystalline 1,4-bis(trioxocane)-α-CD derivative shows a severe distortion toward a narrower elliptical shape for the primary face.

Abstract
Two new C2 symmetric bis-cellobiose and bis-glucose azacrown derivatives were prepared according to the one-step procedure using azacrown ethers and azidosaccharides. Their complexes with aspirin and paracetamol were studied with the use of proton NMR spectroscopy. It was found that these pseudocryptands bind aspirin and paracetamol but each one in a different manner.
