Abstract
Photoinduced electron spin polarization (ESP) is reported in the electronic ground states of three Pt(II) complexes comprised of two S = 1/2 nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals attached through different length para-phenylethynyl bridges to the 3,6 positions of a catecholate (CAT, donor) and 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, acceptor). Complexes 1-3 have from 17 to 41 bonds separating NN radicals and display cw-EPR spectra consistent with |JNN-NN| ≫ |aN|, |JNN-NN| ≥ |aN|, and |JNN-NN| < |aN|, respectively, where JNN-NN is the magnetic exchange coupling between NN radicals in the electronic ground state, and aN is the isotropic 14N hyperfine coupling constant. Light-induced transient EPR spectra characterized as enhanced ground-state absorption were observed for all three complexes using 532 nm pulsed laser excitation into the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LL'CT) band of the (CAT)Pt(bpy) chromophore. The magnitude of the observed ESP increases in the order 1 < 2 < 3 and is inversely correlated with the magnitude of ground-state JNN-NN. In addition to the experimental observation of net absorptive polarization in 1-3, light excitation also produces multiplet polarization in 2. Since the weak dipolar coupling leads to a strong spectral overlap of the absorptive and emissive components, the multiplet polarization is not observed in 1 and 3 and is very weak in 2. The ability to spin-polarize multiple radical spins with a single photon is anticipated to advance new photoinduced multi qubit/qudit ESP protocols for quantum information science applications.

Abstract
Multi-spin excited states of chromophore radical-linked π-conjugated spin systems are investigated by molecular orbital calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The investigated systems consist of an anthracene photosensitive unit leading to a triplet-excited-state (S = 1), π-conjugated linker to propagate spin exchange-coupling, and stable organic radical with a doublet-ground-state (S = 1/2). The intramolecular exchange coupling (JDQ), g value, and fine-structure interaction of their excited states depended on the π-conjugation network (π-topology), type of radical, and molecular structure of the π-linker (length and dihedral angle). The exchange interaction was dependent on the π-topology and the type of radical species. A decrease in the dihedral angle between the anthracene moiety and phenyl linker in the photo-excited state led to larger exchange coupling. With an increase in the π-linker length (r), the magnitude of the exchange coupling gradually decreased in the photoexcited states according to JDQ = JEx0 exp(-βr), similar to the ground-state exchange. The g values of the quartet (Q) state depended only on the radical type (independent of the linker). Conversely, the fine-structure interaction of the Q state was independent of the radical type and depended on both the linker length and the dihedral angle.

Abstract
Understanding and controlling spin dynamics in organic dyes is of significant scientific and technological interest. The investigation of 2,5-dihydropyrrolo[4,3-c]pyrrolo-1,4-dione derivatives (DPPs), one of the most widely used dyes in many fields, has so far been limited to closed-shell molecules. We present a comprehensive joint experimental and computational study of DPP derivatives covalently linked to two nitronyl nitroxide radicals (DPPTh-NN2). Synthesis, single crystal X-ray diffraction study, photophysical properties, magnetic properties established using steady-state and pulse EPR, fast spin dynamics, and computational modelling using density functional theory and ab initio methods of electronic structure and spectroscopic properties of DPPTh-NN2 are presented. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of DPPTh-NN2 and computational modeling of its electronic structure suggest that effective conjugation along the backbone leads to noticeable spin-polarization transfer. Calculations using ab initio methods predict a weak exchange interaction of radical centers through a singlet ground state of DPPTh with a small singlet-triplet splitting (ΔEST) of about 25 cm-1 (∼0.07 kcal mol-1). In turn, a strong ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the triplet state of DPPTh chromophore and nitronyl nitroxides (with J ∼ 250 cm-1) was predicted.

Abstract
Open shell organic molecules bearing π-cores are of great interest for optical, electronic, and magnetic applications but frequently suffer fast decomposition or lack synthetic accessibility. In this regard, nitronyl nitroxides are promising candidates for stable (bi-)radicals due to their high degree of spin delocalization along the O-N-C-N-O pentad unit. Unfortunately, they are limited to electron-rich systems so far. To overcome this limitation, we developed a synthetic procedure for the twofold spin decoration of electron-poor chromophores (Ered = -1158 mV) with nitronyl nitroxide radical moieties via selective deprotection/oxidation of the respective silylated precursors with boron fluoride and subsequent quenching with tetraethyl orthosilicate. Nitronyl nitroxide biradicals PBI-NN, IIn-NN, PhDPP-NN, ThDPP-NN, and FuDPP-NN bridged by perylene bisimide (PBI), isoindigo (IIn), and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) pigment colorants were finally obtained as bench stable compounds after periodate oxidation with yields of 60-81%. The absorption spectral signatures of the chromophores remain preserved in the open shell state and match the ones of the pristine parent compounds, which allowed an a priori prediction of their optical properties. Consequently, we achieved twofold spin labeling while keeping the intrinsic properties of the electron deficient chromophores intact.

Abstract
Calculated conductance through Au n -S-Bridge-S-Au n (Bridge = organic σ/π-system) constructs are compared to experimentally-determined magnetic exchange coupling parameters in a series of TpCum,MeZnSQ-Bridge-NN complexes, where TpCum,Me = hydro-tris(3-cumenyl-1-methylpyrazolyl)borate ancillary ligand, Zn = diamagnetic zinc(ii), SQ = semiquinone (S = 1/2), and NN = nitronylnitroxide radical (S = 1/2). We find that there is a nonlinear functional relationship between the biradical magnetic exchange coupling, J D→A, and the computed conductance, g mb. Although different bridge types (monomer vs. dimer) do not lie on the same J D→A vs. g mb, curve, there is a scale invariance between the monomeric and dimeric bridges which shows that the two data sets are related by a proportionate scaling of J D→A. For exchange and conductance mediated by a given bridge fragment, we find that the ratio of distance dependent decay constants for conductance (β g) and magnetic exchange coupling (β J) does not equal unity, indicating that inherent differences in the tunneling energy gaps, Δε, and the bridge-bridge electronic coupling, H BB, are not directly transferrable properties as they relate to exchange and conductance. The results of these observations are described in valence bond terms, with resonance structure contributions to the ground state bridge wavefunction being different for SQ-Bridge-NN and Au n -S-Bridge-S-Au n systems.

Abstract
Electronic communication through molecular bridges is important for different types of experiments, such as single-molecule conductance, electron transfer, superexchange spin coupling, and intramolecular singlet fission. In many instances, the chemical structure of the bridge determines how the two parts it is connecting communicate, and does so in ways that are transferable between these different manifestations (for example, high conductance often correlates with strong antiferromagnetic spin coupling, and low conductance due to destructive quantum interference correlates with ferromagnetic coupling). Defining electronic communication as a transferable property of the bridge can help transfer knowledge between these different areas of research. Examples and limits of such transferability are discussed here, along with some possible directions for future research, such as employing spin-coupled and mixed-valence systems as structurally well-controlled proxies for understanding molecular conductance and for validating first-principles theoretical methodologies, building conceptual understanding for the growing experimental work on intramolecular singlet fission, and developing measures for the transferability of electronic communication as a bridge property.

Abstract
A biradical consisting of two nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals bridged by diphenyl-hexaethylene glycol chain [phenyl-O-(CH2CH2O)6-phenyl (GBN1)] was synthesized and investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in solution at different temperature ranges. The reversible temperature dependence behavior of spin coupling exchange is comprehensively reflected by the different lifetime of conformations due to a tumbling motion of the flexible hexaethylene glycol chain. The influences of different solvent on the exchange interactions between the radical entities are described by a two-conformational model, which was, for the first time, applied for di-NN molecule and revealed the thermodynamic parameters enthalpy and entropy (ΔH and ΔS) of the conformational changes. The positive value of enthalpy indicates lower energy of the stretched form (as calculated) compared to the bent form. The transition enthalpy in polar MeCN is larger than in toluene and the positive entropy sign indicates more chain conformation options in the bent state. The magnetic properties of this molecule were investigated in solid state by magnetization studies and EPR spectroscopy.

Abstract
An empirical observation of a relationship between a striking feature of electronic transmission through a π-system, destructive quantum interference (QI), on one hand, and the stability of diradicals on the other, leads to the proof of a general theorem that relates the two. Subject to a number of simplifying assumptions, in a π-electron system, QI occurs when electrodes are attached to those positions of an N-carbon atom N-electron closed-shell hydrocarbon where the matrix elements of the Green's function vanish. These zeros come in two types, which are called easy and hard. Suppose an N+2 atom, N+2 electron hydrocarbon is formed by substituting 2 CH2 groups at two atoms, where the electrodes were. Then, if a QI feature is associated with electrode attachment to the two atoms of the original N atom system, the resulting augmented N+2 molecule will be a diradical. If there is no QI feature, i.e., transmission of current is normal if electrodes are attached to the two atoms, the resulting hydrocarbon will not be a diradical but will have a classical closed-shell electronic structure. Moreover, where a diradical exists, the easy zero is associated with a nondisjoint diradical, and the hard zero is associated with a disjoint one. A related theorem is proven for deletion of two sites from a hydrocarbon.

Abstract
Charge carrier mobility is an essential parameter providing control over the performance of semiconductor devices fabricated using a variety of organic molecular materials. Recent design strategies toward molecular materials have been directed at the substitution of amorphous silicon-based semiconductors; accordingly, numerous measurement techniques have been designed and developed to probe the electronic conducting nature of organic materials bearing extremely wide structural variations in comparison with inorganic and/or metal-oxide semiconductor materials. The present perspective highlights the evaluation methodologies of charge carrier mobility in organic materials, as well as the merits and demerits of techniques examining the feasibility of organic molecules, crystals, and supramolecular assemblies in semiconductor applications. Beyond the simple substitution of amorphous silicon, we have attempted to address in this perspective the systematic use of measurement techniques for future development of organic molecular semiconductors.

Abstract
We have investigated unsubstituted and methyl substituted polyradical chains of meta-xylylene by using density functional theory-broken symmetry methodology (DFT-BS). Optimization of geometry in the high-spin and low-spin states have been done at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) and M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) levels in unrestricted methodology. Single-point calculations on the high-spin optimized geometries have been done by using the 6-311G(d,p) basis set. Each polyradical has been found to be nonplanar with a high-spin ground state. Each has a coupling constant larger than thermal energy. For each group of polyradicals, the coupling constant has been found to exponentially decrease with increase in the number of phenylene groups. The B3LYP infinite chain limit has been estimated for both the unsubstituted and substituted polyradicals. The individual inter-radical-site coupling constants have been estimated for the triradicals and tetraradicals using HDVV Hamiltonian in ORCA 3.0.1 code. These are also generally large and positive, revealing a strong intersite ferromagnetic interaction. The intersite coupling constant too decreases with increasing distance between the radical centers. Finally, we have used CRYSTAL09 package for calculations on the infinitely long one-dimensional and periodic polyradical chains. The coupling constants estimated from the periodic calculations are quite large at about 500 cm(-1) and somewhat greater than the limiting values calculated for the polyradicals with an increasing number of phenylene groups. This happens as the individual polyradicals of increasing size progressively deviate from periodicity, and thereby lessens the strength of through-bond spin-spin coupling. The calculated band gap of ∼4.5 eV indicates that the infinitely long one-dimensional chains must be ferromagnetic and electron insulators.

Abstract
Our findings provide a better understanding of the discrepancies related to the discussion in the literature on the ground state of Tschitschibabin's hydrocarbon. A series of phenylene bridged bisnitroxide molecules were designed and studied for the comparison. The simple theoretical and experimental methodologies have been developed and utilized to understand the singlet biradicaloids which exist in semi-quinoid form and exhibits characteristics of biradicaloid and quinoid form simultaneously.

Abstract
The synthesis of rigid symmetric polyradical model systems with inter-spin distances between 1.4 and 4 nm and their room temperature continuous wave (CW) EPR spectra are reported. Conditions for attachment of the spin-label via esterification have been optimized on the direct synthesis of polyradicals from commercially available polyphenols and the carboxylic acid functionalized nitroxide TPC. A common synthetic protocol utilizing 4-hydroxy-4'-iodobiphenyl as a key building block has been used to synthesize an equilateral biradical and a triradical in only two steps from commercially available starting materials. The first synthesis of a tetraradical based upon an adamantane core bearing six equivalent nitroxide-nitroxide distances is also reported. These systems are very promising candidates for studying multi-spin effects in pulsed EPR distance measurements.
