Triphenylamine–Benzimidazole Derivatives: Synthesis, Excited-State Characterization, and DFT Studies

Early bird or night owl? Controlling the ultrafast photodynamics of triphenylamine substituted 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine

Controlling the ultrafast photodynamics of metal-free organic molecules has great potential for technological applications. In this work, we use solvent polarity and viscosity as "external knobs" to govern the photodynamics of an electron-donating derivative of 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (terpy), namely 4'-(4-(di(4-tert-butylphenyl)amine)phenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (tBuTPAterpy). We combine femtosecond fluorescence upconversion (FlUC), transient absorption (TA) and quantum mechanical calculations to provide a comprehensive description of the tBuTPAterpy's photodynamics. Our results demonstrate that, by changing the solvent, the time scale of light-induced conformational changes of the system can be tuned over two orders of magnitude, controlling the tBuTPAterpy fluorescence spectral region and yield. As a result, depending on the local environment, tBuTPAterpy can act either as an "early bird" or a "night owl", with a tunability that makes it a promising candidate for metal-free sensors.

Chromium(III)-Catalyzed Desymmetrization of meso-Epoxides via Remote Stereocontrol: Synthesis of Chiral Fluorenes Bearing All-Carbon Quaternary Stereocenters

An asymmetric desymmetrization of fluorene-derived meso-epoxides is disclosed for the construction of chiral fluorenes bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter at C9. This desymmetrization is catalyzed by a chiral (salen)CrIII complex via remote stereocontrol, producing diverse chiral fluorenes with excellent yields and stereoselectivity. The practicality of this protocol was demonstrated through the transformation of the obtained products to some intriguing enantioenriched polymerizable monomers.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Triphenylamine-Containing Electrochromic Polyimides with Benzimidazole Substituents

Two novel electrochromic aromatic polyimides (named as TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI, respectively) with pendent benzimidazole group were synthesized from 1,2-Diphenyl-N,N'-di-4-aminophenyl-5-amino-benzimidazole and 4-Amino-4'-aminophenyl-4″-1-phenyl-benzimidazolyl-phenyl-aniline with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropane) phthalic anhydride (6FDA) via two-step polymerization process, respectively. Then, polyimide films were prepared on ITO-conductive glass by electrostatic spraying, and their electrochromic properties were studied. The results showed that due to the π-π* transitions, the maximum UV-Vis absorption bands of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films were located at about 314 nm and 346 nm, respectively. A pair of reversible redox peaks of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films that were associated with noticeable color changed from original yellow to dark blue and green were observed in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) test. With increasing voltage, new absorption peaks of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films emerged at 755 nm and 762 nm, respectively. The switching/bleaching times of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films were 13 s/16 s and 13.9 s/9.5 s, respectively, showing that these polyimides can be used as novel electrochromic materials.

Amino acid conjugates of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole provide better anti-inflammatory pharmacology and improved toxicity profile

Benzimidazole is an important pharmacophore for clinically active drugs against inflammation and treatment of pain, however, it is associated with gastrointestinal side effects. Here we synthesized benzimidazole based agents with significant analgesic/anti-inflammatory potential but with less gastrointestinal adverse effects. In this study, we synthesized novel, orally bioavailable 2-mercaptobenzimidazole amino acid conjugates (4a-4o) and screened them for analgesic, anti-inflammatory and gastro-protective effects. The synthesized 2-mercaptbenzimidazole derivatives were characterized for their structure using FTIR, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopic techniques. The 2-mercaptobenzimidazole amino acid conjugates have found to possess potent analgesic, anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective activities, particularly with compound 4j and 4k. Most of the compounds exhibited remarkable anti-ulcer and antisecretory effects. Molecular docking studies were carried out to study the binding affinities and interactions of the synthesized compounds with target proteins COX-2 (PDB ID: 3LN1) and H+ /K+ -ATPase (PDB ID: 5Y0B). Our results support the clinical promise of these newly synthesized 2-mercaptobezimidazol conjugates as a component of therapeutic strategies for inflammation and analgesia, for which the gastric side effects are always a major limitation.

NLOphoric Triphenylamine Derived Donor-π-Acceptor-π-Donor Based Colorants: Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Density Functional Theory and Z-scan Studies

Three Donor-π-Acceptor-π-Donor type styryl dyes (5a-c) with different secondary donors are synthesized and characterized to study their nonlinear and linear optical properties. The structure-property relationships of the dyes are described in the light of systematic photophysical and theoretical investigations. The photophysical characteristics of 5a-c are influenced by the polarity of the medium, with an appreciable bathochromic shift in emission (5b = 81 nm) and large Stoke shifts (5b = 104-173 nm) in polar solvents. 5a-c showed intramolecular charge transfer characteristics recognized with the help of emission solvatochromism, solvent polarity graphs, natural bond orbital analysis and HOMO-LUMO energy difference. The optimized geometry and frontier molecular orbitals reveal that the electron donation takes place from secondary donors and not from a fixed donor (triphenylamine) which is more twisted. The nonlinear optical properties obtained using solvent induced spectral shift and computational methods are found within the limiting values. Z-scan results reveal saturable kind of behavior for 5a, 5b and 5c, whereas 5a and 5b show reverse saturable kind of behavior in acetone and ethanol and hence give optical limiting values. The two-photon absorption cross section described by two-level approximation is highest for 5b (251-300 GM).

Design and synthesis of highly twisted phenanthroimidazole substituted blue-emitting truxene based fluorescent chromophores

Highly twisted truxene–phenanthroimidazole conjugates have been designed to obtain blue chromophores. The materials show good quantum yields of up to 0.83 and predominant radiative pathways.

Optoelectronic performance comparison of new thiophene linked benzimidazole conjugates with diverse substitution patterns

In an approach to develop efficient organic optoelectronic devices to be used in light-driven systems, a series of three thiophene linked benzimidazole conjugates were synthesized and characterized. The combination of two thiophene rings to a benzimidazole core decorated with different functional groups (such as OCH₃, N(CH₃)₂, CF₃) resulted in donor-acceptor type molecular scaffold. The effect of the electronic behavior of the substituents on the optical, electrochemical, morphological and electron/hole transporting properties of the dyes were systematically investigated. DTBI2 dye exhibited distinct absorption properties among the other studied dyes because N,N-dimethylamino group initiated intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process in the studied solvents. In solid state, the dyes exhibit peaks extending up to 600nm. Depending on the solvent polarities, dyes show significant wavelength changes on their fluorescence emission spectra in the excited states. Morphological parameters of the thin films spin-coated from CHCl₃ solution were investigated by using AFM instrument; furthermore photovoltaic responses are reported, even though photovoltaic performances of the fabricated solar cells with different configurations are quite low.

One-pot, two-step synthesis and photophysical properties of 2-(5-phenylindol-3-yl)benzimidazole derivatives

A one-pot, two-step procedure is developed for synthesis of fluorescent 2-(5-phenylindol-3-yl)benzimidazoles with high yield.

Alphabet-Inspired Design of (Hetero)Aromatic Push-Pull Chromophores

Push-pull molecules represent a unique and fascinating class of organic π-conjugated materials. Herein, we provide a summary of their recent extraordinary design inspired by letters of the alphabet, especially focusing on H-, L-, T-, V-, X-, and Y-shaped molecules. Representative structures from each class were presented and their fundamental properties and prospective applications were discussed. In particular, emphasis is given to molecules recently prepared in our laboratory with T-, X-, and Y-shaped arrangements based on indan-1,3-dione, benzene, pyridine, pyrazine, imidazole, and triphenylamine. These push-pull molecules turned out to be very efficient charge-transfer chromophores with tunable properties suitable for second-order nonlinear optics, two-photon absorption, reversible pH-induced and photochromic switching, photocatalysis, and intercalation.

Functionalized Benzimidazole Scaffolds: Privileged Heterocycle for Drug Design in Therapeutic Medicine

Benzimidazole derivatives are crucial structural scaffolds found in diverse libraries of biologically active compounds which are therapeutically useful agents in drug discovery and medicinal research. They are structural isosteres of naturally occurring nucleotides, which allows them to interact with the biopolymers of living systems. Hence, there is a need to couple the latest information with the earlier documentations to understand the current status of the benzimidazole nucleus in medicinal chemistry research. This present work unveils the benzimidazole core as a multifunctional nucleus that serves as a resourceful tool of information for synthetic modifications of old existing candidates in order to tackle drug resistance bottlenecks in therapeutic medicine. This manuscript deals with the recent advances in the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives, the widespread biological activities as well as pharmacokinetic reports. These present them as a toolbox for fighting infectious diseases and also make them excellent candidates for future drug design.

An efficient one-pot two catalyst system in the construction of 2-substituted benzimidazoles: synthesis of benzimidazo[1,2-c]quinazolines

The benzimidazole core is a common moiety in a large number of natural products and pharmacologically active small molecules. The synthesis of novel benzimidazole derivatives remains a main focus in medicinal research. In continuation of the efforts towards Ce(III) catalysts for organic transformations, we observed for the first time the activity of the iodide ion and copper cation in activating CeCl3·7H2O in the selective formation of prototypical 2-substituted benzimidazoles. The one-pot CeCl3·7H2O-CuI catalytic system procedure includes the cyclo-dehydrogenation of aniline Schiff's bases, generated in situ from the condensation of 1,2-phenylenediamine and aldehydes, followed by the oxidation with iodine, which works as a hydrogen sponge. Mild reaction conditions, good to excellent yields, and clean reactions make the procedure a useful contribution to the synthesis of biologically active fused heterocycles containing benzimidazoquinazolines.

Impact of the different electron-releasing subunits on the dye-sensitized solar cell performance of new triphenylamine-benzimidazole based molecules

New triphenylamine-benzimidazole type small molecules with different electron-releasing groups were designed and synthesized to investigate their photovoltaic performances in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Their good visible absorptions covering the 400-535 nm in addition to suitable lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels between -3.03 and -3.11 eV make good candidates them for DSSC devices. Fluorescence quenching studies of the dyes with pristine titania support the good electron injection to conduction band of TiO2. Time resolved measurements of the dyes in solutions indicate the occurence of charge generation during the excited state. One of the used dyes in DSSC devices, TPA5a, carrying a methoxy group in triphenylamine part of the structure, gave much higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) value of 4.31% as compared to the other derivatives. Device fabricated from TPA5a dye gives good external quantum efficiency (EQE) value above 70% at 460 nm. Also, electron impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis of the devices gives a good explanation of the understanding of the cell performances.

Phenothiazine-based bipolar green-emitters containing benzimidazole units: synthesis, photophysical and electroluminescence properties

A series of bipolar green emitters bearing hole-transporting phenothiazine and electron-transporting N-phenylbenzimidazole are synthesized and characterized by their photophysical, electrochemical and thermal properties.

Crystal structure of 4-eth-oxy-N-(4-eth-oxy-phen-yl)-N-phenyl-aniline

In the title compound, C₂₂H₂₃NO₂, the planes of the eth­oxy­benzene rings are oriented with respect to that of the phenyl ring at dihedral angles of 61.77 (8) and 84.77 (8)°, and they are twisted with respect to one another, with a dihedral angle of 80.37 (7)°. In the crystal, weak C—H⋯π inter­actions link the mol­ecules into supra­molecular chains propagating along [101].
