Abstract
A recent experimental study reported a visible-light-mediated aerobic oxidative coupling reaction of phenol with alkynes that produces hydroxyl-functionalized aryl ketones using inexpensive CuCl as catalyst under mild conditions. Here we apply the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method and multistate second-order perturbation (MS-CASPT2) theory in combination with density functional theory (DFT) to systematically explore the entire photocatalytic reaction between phenol and phenylacetylene in acetonitrile solution in the presence of molecular oxygen and CuCl. Our main findings are as follows: (1) The visible-light-driven conversion of phenylacetylene to PhCCCu(I) occurs thermally because of efficient excited-state deactivation to the S0 state. (2) The single electron transfer from PhCCCu(I) to molecular oxygen that leads to the PhCCCu(II) cation takes place in the T1 state after an efficient S1 → T1 intersystem crossing. (3) During the initial oxidation of phenol, molecular oxygen prefers to attack the para position of the phenol radical intermediate to produce 1,4-benzoquinone, which further reacts with PhCCCu(II) to generate para-hydroxyl-substituted aryl ketones; this is the origin of the experimentally observed regioselectivity. (4) The C≡C bond of the phenylacetylene moiety is not activated by the triplet-state single electron transfer from PhCCCu(I) to molecular oxygen but is cleaved at a later stage, in the [2+2] cycloaddition between PhCCCu(II) and 1,4-benzoquinone. (5) The substrate phenol plays an active role in several hydrogen transfer and decarboxylation reactions; the barriers to these phenol-assisted reactions are lower than those for the corresponding direct or water-assisted reactions, which explains the experimental finding that adding water does not enhance the photocatalytic reaction yield. In summary, while supporting the general features of the experimentally proposed mechanism, our computational study provides detailed mechanistic insights that should be useful for understanding and further improving visible-light-induced copper-catalyzed coupling reactions.

Abstract
Computational investigations on the bisphospholanoethane (BPE)-ligated Cu-catalyzed enantioselective addition of enynes to ketones were performed with the density functional theory (DFT) method. Two BPE-mesitylcopper (CuMes) catalysts, BPE-CuMes and (S,S)-Ph-BPE–CuMes, were employed to probe the reaction mechanism with the emphasis on stereoselectivity. The calculations on the BPE-CuMes system indicate that the active metallized enyne intermediate acts as the catalyst for the catalytic cycle. The catalytic cycle involves two steps: (1) ketone addition to the alkene moiety of the metallized enyne; and (2) metallization of the enyne followed by the release of product with the recovery of the active metallized enyne intermediate. The first step accounts for the distribution of the products, and therefore is the stereo-controlling step in chiral systems. In the chiral (S,S)-Ph-BPE–CuMes system, the steric hindrance is vital for the distribution of products and responsible for the stereoselectivity of this reaction. The steric hindrance between the phenyl ring of the two substrates and groups at the chiral centers in the ligand skeleton is identified as the original of the stereoselectivity for the titled reaction.

Abstract
We present a computational mechanistic study on the copper(III)-catalysed carboarylation-ring closure reactions leading to the formation of functionalised heterocycles. We have performed DFT calculations along selected routes and compared their free energy profiles. The calculations considered two viable options for the underlying mechanism which differ in the order of the oxazoline ring formation and the aryl transfer steps. In our model transformation, it was found that the reaction generally features the aryl transfer-ring closing sequence and this sequence shows very limited sensitivity to the variation of the substituent of the reactants. On the basis of the mechanism the origin of the stereoselectivity is ascribed to the interaction of the Cu ion with the oxazoline oxygen driving the ring-closure step selectively.

Abstract
A highly efficient enantioselective nitroso Diels–Alder reaction of 6-methyl-2-nitroso pyridine with various 1,3-dienes was successfully developed using a copper(i)/(S)–TF-BiphamPhos complex as the catalyst. For most of the cyclic dienes, the cycloadducts were obtained in high yields with excellent regio-, and stereoselectivities. Acyclic 2-silyloxy-1,3-diene also worked well in the reaction.

Abstract
The hetero-Diels-Alder reaction between a nitroso dienophile and a conjugated diene to give the 3,6-dihydro-2H-1,2-oxazine scaffold is useful for the synthesis of many biologically interesting molecules due to the diverse opportunities created by subsequent transformations of the resulting 1,2-oxazine ring. This review discusses the rationale for the observed regio- and stereoselectivity and the methods developed in recent years used to control and improve the stereo- and regioselectivity for the synthesis of 1,2-oxazine scaffolds.

Abstract
A study of the reactivity of 1-borodienes with nitrosoarene compounds has been carried out showing an outcome that differs according to the hybridization state of the boron moiety. Using an sp(2) boron substituent, a one-pot hetero-Diels-Alder/ring contraction cascade occurred to afford N-arylpyrroles with low to good yields depending on the electronic properties of the substituents on the borodiene, whereas an sp(3) boron substituent led to the formation of stable boro-oxazines with high regioselectivity in most of the cases, in moderate to good yields. (1)H and (11)B NMR studies on two boro-oxazine regioisomers showed that selective deprotection can be performed. Formation of either the pyrrole or the furan derivative is pH- and regioisomer-structure-dependent. The results obtained, together with previous B3LYP calculations, support mechanistic proposals which suggest that pyrrole, or furan, formation proceeds via oxazine formation, followed by a boryl rearrangement and an intramolecular addition-elimination sequence.
