Abstract
A molecular cage consisting of two cyclic hexapeptides with an alternating sequence of (2S,4S)-4-aminoproline and 6-aminopicolinic acid subunits, covalently linked via three diglycolic acid subunits, interacts with a variety of inorganic anions in acetonitrile/water. In the respective complexes, the anion resides in a cavity between the two cyclopeptide rings where it interacts with six converging NH groups. The cage binds sulfate anions in acetonitrile/water, 2 : 1 (v/v) with a log Ka of 6.7, ca. 2.5 orders of magnitude stronger than an analogous bis(cyclopeptide) with only one linker whose sulfate affinity log Ka amounts to 4.3. The preorganization induced by the three linking units is thus beneficial for sulfate binding. In addition, these linkers cause the dissociation of the sulfate complex to have a substantial Gibbs free energy of activation ΔG≠ of 68.9 kJ mol-1 and they also seem to affect anion selectivity as illustrated by the different effects some anions produce on the 1 H NMR spectra of the triply and singly-linked bis(cyclopeptides). Such anion binding cages represent promising scaffolds to mimic natural anion receptors such as the sulfate-binding protein.

Abstract
Cucurbit[7]uril adsorbs SO2 selectively over other gas molecules such as C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, CH4, F2, Cl2, NO2, NO, CO2, CO, H2S, N2, and H2, because of the combined effects of electrostatic and dispersion interactions.

Abstract
Metalloporphyrins which form the core of many bioenzymes and natural light harvesting or electron transport systems, exhibit a variety of selective functional properties depending on the state and surroundings with which they exist in biological systems. The specificity and ease with which they function in each of their bio-functions appear to be largely governed by the nature and disposition of the protein globule around the porphyrin reaction center. Synthetic porphyrin frameworks confined within or around a pre-organized molecular entity like the protein network in natural systems have attracted considerable attraction, especially in the field of biomimetic reactions. At the same time a large number of macrocyclic oligomers such as calixarenes, resorcinarenes, spherands, cyclodextrins and crown ethers have been investigated in detail as efficient molecular receptors. These molecular receptors are synthetic host molecules with enclosed interiors, which are designed three dimensionally to ensure strong and precise molecular encapsulation/recognition. Due to their complex structures, enclosed guest molecules reside in an environment isolated from the outside and as a consequence, physical properties and chemical reactions specific to that environment in these guest species can be identified. The facile incorporation of such molecular receptors into the highly photoactive and catalytically efficient porphyrin framework allows for convenient design of useful molecular systems with unique structural and functional properties. Such systems have provided over the years attractive model systems for the study of various biological and chemical processes, and the design of new materials and molecular devices. This review focuses on the recent developments in the synthesis of porphyrin assemblies associated with cyclodextrins, calixarenes and resorcinarenes and their potential applications in the fields of molecular encapsulation/recognition, and chemical catalysis.

Abstract
The on and off rates corresponding to the binding of two test anions (acetate, AcO(-), and dihydrogen phosphate, H(2)PO(4)(-), studied as their tetrabutylammonium salts) to diprotonated cyclo[8]pyrrole have been determined in CH(3)CN using stopped-flow analyses carried out at various temperatures. For dihydrogen phosphate, this afforded the activation enthalpies and entropies associated with both off and on processes. The different dynamic behavior seen for these test anions underscores the utility of kinetic analyses as a possible new tool for the advanced characterization of anion receptors.

Abstract
The reversible trapping of small hydrocarbons and other gases by cryptophane-111 (1) in organic solution was characterized with variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Characteristic spectral changes observed upon guest binding allowed kinetic and thermodynamic data to be readily extracted, permitting quantification and comparison of different host-guest interactions. Previous work (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 10332) demonstrated that 1, the smallest cryptophane to date, forms a complex with xenon with remarkably high affinity. Presently, it is shown that 1 also exhibits slow exchange dynamics with methane at reduced temperatures (delta(bound) = -5.2 ppm) with an association constant K(a) = 148 M(-1) at 298 K. In contrast, ethane and ethylene are poorly recognized by 1 with K(a) values of only 2 M(-1) and 22 M(-1), respectively; moreover, chloromethane (whose molecular volume is similar to that of xenon, approximately 42 A(3)) is not observed to bind to 1. Separately, molecular hydrogen (H(2)) gas is observed to bind 1, but in contrast to other ligands presently studied, H(2) complexation is spectrally manifested by fast exchange throughout virtually the entire range of available conditions, as well as by a complex dependence of the guest (1)H resonance frequency upon temperature and host concentration. Taken together, these results establish 1 as a selective host for small gases, with implications for the design of size- and geometry-selective sensors targeted for various gas molecules.

Abstract
Capsule-shaped molecular receptors are fundamental to the modeling of biological host-guest interactions such as those characteristic of enzymatic processes. Among the more versatile and effective synthetic receptors are the hemicarcerand-type hosts. Herein we report the synthesis of six novel resorcin[4]arene cavitand-capped porphyrin capsules, in a new series of molecular capsules modeled on the classical hemicarcerands initially reported by Cram and co-workers. In the first reported instance of its utilisation in the preparation of supramolecularly-capped porphyrin host molecules, microwave (MW) irradiation was used (in conjunction with Adler conditions) in order to form the porphyrin cap in situ. Additionally, the yields obtained via these conditions exhibited a significant improvement, relative to the traditional refluxing protocol hitherto reported. Capsules 20-25 are indefinitely stable, and we observed that 22 and 25 possess the smallest rigidified cavities yet reported for resorcin[4]arene cavitand-capped porphyrin host molecules.

Abstract
An imine-linked (+)-syn-benzotricamphor derivative gives access to chiral unimolecular cages exhibiting internal cavities of new shapes and volumes. One of these hosts hydrocarbon gases at low temperatures in solution through CH-pi attractive interactions. No encapsulation is observed when the cage structure is too narrow or too large for the guest.
