Abstract
Chiral substituted pyrrolidines are key elements in various biologically active molecules and are therefore valuable synthetic targets. One traditional method towards enantiomerically pure compounds is the application of kinetic resolution. In this review, current KR methodology used in the synthesis of substituted pyrrolidines is surveyed, including enzymatic methods, cycloadditions and reduction of ketones.

Abstract
The synthesis of selective inhibitors of human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) is of paramount importance to avoid side effects derived from undesired interactions with isoforms not involved in the targeted pathology, and this was partially addressed with the introduction of a sugar moiety (the so-called "sugar approach"). Since glycomimetics are considered more selective than the parent sugars in inhibiting carbohydrate-processing enzyme, we explored the possibility of further tuning the selectivity of hCAs inhibitors by combining the sulfonamide moiety with a sugar analogue residue. In particular, we report the synthesis of two novel hCAs inhibitors 2 and 3 which feature the presence of a piperidine iminosugar and an additional carbohydrate moiety derived from levoglucosenone (1), a key intermediate derived from cellulose pyrolysis. Biological assays revealed that iminosugar 2 is a very strong inhibitor of the central nervous system (CNS) abundantly expressed hCA VII (K I of 7.4 nM) and showed a remarkable selectivity profile toward this isoform. Interestingly, the presence of levoglucosenone in glycomimetic 3 imparted a strong inhibitory activity toward the tumor associated hCA IX (K I of 35.9 nM).

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for the stereoselective synthesis of isoxazoline/isoxazole-fused iminosugar derivatives has been developed using intramolecular nitrile oxide cycloaddition (INOC) as a key step. Iminosugar C-nitromethyl glycosides, derived from simple carbohydrates, served as excellent nitrile oxide precursors in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. N-Alkenyl iminosugar C-nitromethyl glycosides afforded novel isoxazoline-fused indolizidine-, pyrrolizidine-, and quinolizidine-based iminosugars in excellent yields with a high degree of stereoselectivity, whereas N-alkynyl iminosugar C-nitromethyl glycosides furnished the corresponding isoxazole containing tricyclic iminosugars in very good yields.

Abstract
Levoglucosenone (1), a compound that will soon be available in tonne quantities through the pyrolysis of acid-treated lignocellulosic biomass, has been converted into isolevoglucosenone (2) using Wharton rearrangement chemistry. Treatment of compound 1 with alkaline hydrogen peroxide gave the γ-lactones 5 and 6 rather than the required epoxy-ketones 3 and/or 4. However, the latter pair of compounds could be obtained by an initial Luche reduction of compound 1, electrophilic epoxidation of the resulting allylic alcohol 8 and oxidation of the product oxiranes 9 and 10. Independent treatment of compounds 3 and 4 with hydrazine then acetic acid followed by oxidation of the ensuing allylic alcohols finally afforded isolevoglucosenone (2). Details of the single-crystal X-ray analyses of epoxy-alcohols 9 and 10 are reported.

Abstract
Two complementary chiral catalysts, the phosphine 8d and the DMAP-derived ent-23b, are used simultaneously to selectively activate a mixture of two different achiral anhydrides as acyl donors under homogeneous conditions. The resulting activated intermediates 25 and 26 react with the racemic benzylic alcohol 5 to form enantioenriched esters (R)-24 and (S)-17 by fully catalytic parallel kinetic resolution (PKR). The aroyl ester (R)-24 is obtained with near-ideal enantioselectivity for the PKR process, but (S)-17 is contaminated by ca. 8% of the minor enantiomer (R)-17 resulting from a second pathway via formation of mixed anhydride 27 and its activation by 8d.
