Abstract
Binaphthyl-prolinol ligands were designed and applied in enantioselective arylation of aromatic aldehydes and sequential arylation-lactonization of methyl 2-formylbenzoate. Under optimized conditions, the reactions provided the desired diarylmethanols and 3-aryl phthalides in up to 96% yields with up to 99% ee and up to 89% yields with up to 99% ee, respectively. In particular, essentially optically pure 3-aryl phthalides (over 99% ee) were obtained in large quantities through recrystallization.

Abstract
Herein, we discuss our laboratory's research in the activation of alcohol derivatives in cross-coupling and cross-electrophile coupling reactions. Our developed methods enable the use of secondary alcohols to afford tertiary stereogenic centers, which we applied to the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant compounds and substructures. We first discuss the synthesis of bioactive compounds via stereospecific Kumada cross-coupling reactions, followed by a discussion on the development of our stereoselective cross-electrophile coupling reaction to synthesize cyclopropanes.

Enantiopure
aziridin-2-yl methanols 3–7 are used
as highly effective sensors for enantiodiscrimination
of α-racemic carboxylic acids containing tertiary or quaternary
stereogenic centers. A linear correlation between theoretical and
observed % ee values for CSA-3 and enantiomerically enriched
samples of mandelic acid has been observed, indicating the possible
application of these compounds in the ee determination. The free NH
and OH groups in 3–7 ensure good
recognition.

Abstract
A stereoselective synthesis of a bioactive triarylmethane is described. Key to the synthesis is a nickel-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling which proceeds with retention at the benzylic center. This method is complementary to our previously reported nickel-catalyzed Kumada coupling which proceeds with inversion. Together, the two methods allow for efficient access to either enantiomer of biologically relevant triarylmethanes from a common enantioenriched intermediate.

Abstract
Herein, we describe a solvent- and metal-free method for the synthesis of 3-chalcogenyl-indoles from indoles and diorganyl dichalcogenides using an equivalent amount of DMSO as an oxidant, under catalysis by molecular iodine. This mild and eco-friendly approach allowed the preparation of a wide range of 3-selenyl- and 3-sulfenyl-indoles in good to excellent yields.

Alkyl Grignard reagents that contain β-hydrogen atoms were used in a stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction to form C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) bonds. Aryl Grignard reagents were also utilized to synthesize 1,1-diarylalkanes. Several compounds synthesized by this method exhibited selective inhibition of proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Abstract
The first Negishi nickel-catalyzed stereospecific cross-coupling reaction of secondary benzylic esters is reported. A series of traceless directing groups is evaluated for ability to promote cross-coupling with dimethylzinc. Esters with a chelating thioether derived from commercially available 2-(methylthio)acetic acid are most effective. The products are formed in high yield and with excellent stereospecificity. A variety of functional groups are tolerated in the reaction including alkenes, alkynes, esters, amines, imides, and O-, S-, and N-heterocycles. The utility of this transformation is highlighted in the enantioselective synthesis of a retinoic acid receptor agonist and a fatty acid amide hydrolase inhibitor.

Abstract
Coupling with inversion: Chiral diarylmethanol derivatives undergo a stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with aryl Grignard reagents (see scheme). The reaction proceeds with inversion of configuration and high enantiospecificity. The method has been applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a triarylmethane-based anti-cancer compound.

Abstract
Stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of benzylic 2-methoxyethyl ethers are reported for the preparation of enantioenriched 1,1-diarylethanes. The 2-methoxyethyl ether serves as a traceless directing group that accelerates cross-coupling. Chelation of magnesium ions is proposed to activate the benzylic C-O bond for oxidative addition.

Abstract
Chiral C2-symmetric diamines have emerged as versatile auxiliaries or ligands in numerous asymmetric transformations. Chiral 2,2’-bispyrrolidine-based salan ligands were prepared and applied to the asymmetric aryl transfer to aldehydes with arylboronic acids as the source of transferable aryl groups. The corresponding diarylmethanols were obtained in high yields with moderate to good enantioselectivitives of up to 83% ee.

Abstract
Secondary benzylic ethers undergo stereospecific substitution reactions with Grignard reagents in the presence of nickel catalysts. Reactions proceed with inversion of configuration and high stereochemical fidelity. This reaction allows for facile enantioselective synthesis of biologically active diarylethanes from readily available optically enriched carbinols.
