Abstract
In this study, we designed and synthesised a series of coumarin derivatives appended with a long alkoxy chain on the seventh position of the coumarin-3-carboxylate/carboxylic acid core to make thin film materials. Synthesised compounds were characterized by their UV and fluorescence spectra in solutions as well as their films prepared by both LB and spin-coated methods. The surface morphology and electrical behaviour of thin films were judged by AFM, SEM and I-V characteristic mapping respectively. Isotherm, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic investigations revealed the formation of aggregates on thin films. The result of SEM and AFM images provides the information about the length and height of aggregates on the thin films of coumarin derivatives. From I-V characteristics, it was found that at room temperature, the spin-coated films of coumarin derivatives containing an ester functional group exhibited a threshold switching behaviour, whereas derivatives containing the carboxylic acid functional group showed both threshold and bipolar switching behaviours. We also noticed that the I-V characteristic features of synthesized materials depended on the length of the alkyl chain of individual series.

Abstract
A simple protocol for the protection of amines was realized through a base-catalyzed one-pot reaction of dimedone, β-nitroalkene, and amine. Employing this strategy, a variety of amines/amino acids were protected in excellent yields. These acid/base stable protected amines can be deprotected by either ethylene diamine or hydrazine hydrate under mild conditions. The practical application of this orthogonal protecting group was demonstrated by the synthesis of cyclic peptide melanotan II via SPPS.

Abstract
A chlorinated coumarin-aldehyde was developed as a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe for distinguishing glutathione (GSH), cystenine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcy). The GSH-induced substitution-cyclization and Cys/Hcy-induced substitution-rearrangement cascades lead to the corresponding thiol-coumarin-iminium cation and amino-coumarin-aldehyde with distinct photophysical properties. The probe can be used to simultaneously detect GSH and Cys/Hcy by visual determination based on distinct different colors - red and pale-yellow in PBS buffer solution by two reaction sites. From the linear relationship of fluorescence intensity and biothiols concentrations, it was determined that the limits of detection for GSH, Hcy and Cys are 0.08, 0.09 and 0.18 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the probe was successfully used in living cell imaging with low cell toxicity.

Abstract
Two coumarin/pyrrole-fused heterocycles were synthesized to investigate their photochemical and redox-switching properties. Photooxidation of the colorless diphenyl-substituted pyrrolocoumarin resulted in a distinct change to red and a sharp decrease in fluorescence intensity. The photooxidized product can be swiftly reverted to the original form by NaCNBH3 reduction or hydrogenation.

Abstract
Our various efforts toward the synthesis of a set of novel sugar hybrid scaffolds of several biologically active natural products such as taxol, steroids, β-lactams, and otteliones are presented. We have shown the application of the hybrid approach to design and rapidly generate a library of novel natural product-like compounds, which may have interesting biological features, using metathesis and/or cycloaddition reactions as key steps.
