Abstract
A nano-enabled drug delivery acupuncture technology (nd-Acu) is developed that is based on traditional acupuncture needles where the stainless-steel surface is designed to deliver various payload molecules. To create the nd-Acu platform, an electrochemistry procedure is used to attach methyl salicylate-modified cyclodextrin in which the sugar rings allow the encapsulation of structurally defined single or multiple payload molecules via an inclusion complexation process. Drug loading and release profile are first studied using fluorescent dyes abiotically and at intact animal level. nd-Acu allows more efficient dye loading and time-dependent release compared to pristine needles without cyclodextrin modification. Subsequently, a proof-of-principle efficacy study is conducted using the platform to load a local anesthetic, lidocaine, for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in mice. It is demonstrated that lidocaine-laden nd-Acu can effectively alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and slow down KOA development biochemically and histologically. Hypothesis-driven and proteomic approaches are utilized to investigate the working mechanisms of lidocaine nd-Acu, indicating that the therapeutic outcome is attributed to the in vivo modulation of the HMGB1/TLR4 signaling pathway. The study also obtained preliminary evidence suggesting the involvement of mitochondria as well as small GTPase such as cdc42 during the treatment by lidocaine nd-Acu.

Abstract
We report here a folate-modified membrane anchor for cell surface modification to induce cell adhesion to target cells. The membrane anchor region, which was consisted of cationic lysine residues and palmitoyl group-modified residues, was modified with folate through an oligoethlene glycol linker. The peptide anchor was modified on to the cell membrane by using β-cyclodextrin as a solubilizer of the peptide anchor. After modification, the peptide anchor disappeared from the cell membrane via endocytotic uptake or dissociation from the cell membrane. However, the endocytosed peptide was represented on the cell surface via recycling endosome pathway. The obtained folate-modified cells successfully adhered on to target cells which expressed folate receptor α via ligand-receptor specific interaction and adhesion continued at least 4 hours.

Abstract
Vesicles were formed in aqueous solution using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complexes with a series of ultra-small aromatic molecules. The vesicles are easy to prepare without a complicated synthesis procedure and their structure was identified and characterized using various techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and dynamic laser light scattering. Using the β-CD/l-phenylalanine system as a representative example, the structural factors that caused the self-assembly were revealed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. In addition, the vesicular architecture could be endowed with a diverse range of stimuli-responses, as a consequence of the selective addition of various guest molecules. It is anticipated that this novel assembly strategy could be further extended, and that it presents new opportunities for the development of nanocarriers and soft materials.

Abstract
In this work, the thermal stabilities of a series of polyethylene glycols (PEG 4000, 6000 and 10000) were investigated after compositing with different kinds of inorganic salts, such as ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (AMT), NH4VO3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, Na2SO4, Na2MoO4. It was first observed that all the ammonium salts exerted leveling effects for the thermal stabilities of the PEGs. In other words, the presence of the ammonium salts caused the occurrence of the maximum decomposition rates of the PEGs with the same repeat sequence but different chain lengths at almost the same temperatures. Leveling effects were defined by three parameters: leveling spans, leveling degrees and dispersion degrees of leveling. Further experiments revealed that leveling effects also occur in similar types of polymers: polypropylene glycols (PPG 2000, 3000 and 4000). A series of independent experiments including Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, conductivity and field-emission scanning electron microscopy were performed to explore the origin of leveling effects. We consider that the interaction between inorganic ions and polymer molecules and the Hofmeister effect of ions in solution are two important factors affecting the stability of salt–polymer composites, because they can contribute to decrease the interaction between the polymer chains, leading to changes in the conformation and pyrolysis mode of polymers. We believe that the finding of leveling effects would be significant for both basic and applied research of soft matter.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several formulations have been proposed to improve the systemic delivery of novel cancer therapeutic compounds, including cyclodextrin derivatives. We aimed to synthesize and characterize of CDF-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (1:2) (CDFCD). METHODS The compound was characterized by Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction studies, H1 & C13 NMR studies and scanning electron microscopic analysis. Its activity was tested against multiple cancer cell lines, and in vivo bioavailability was checked. RESULTS CDF-β-cyclodextrin was found to lower IC(50) value by half when tested against multiple cancer cell lines. It preferentially accumulated in the pancreas, where levels of CDF-β-cyclodextrin in mice were 10 times higher than in serum, following intravenous administration of an aqueous CDF-β-cyclodextrin preparation. CONCLUSIONS Novel curcumin analog CDF preferentially accumulates in the pancreas, leading to its potent anticancer activity against pancreatic cancer cells. Synthesis of such CDF-β-cyclodextrin self-assembly is an effective strategy to enhance its bioavailability and tissue distribution, warranting further evaluation for CDF delivery in clinical settings for treatment of human malignancies.
