Abstract
A novel cascade Pd(II)-catalyzed endo-dig cycloisomerization and olefination reaction of 2-benzyl-3-alkynyl chromones with activated/unactivated alkenes has been developed for the synthesis of fused oxatricyclic compounds. This concise one-pot synthetic approach was applied to the difunctionalization of unbiased alkynes based on 2-benzyl-3-(alkynyl)-4H-chromen-4-one via O-attack endo-dig cycloisomerization, followed by olefination with both activated and unactivated alkenes.

Abstract
A Lewis base-catalyzed intramolecular vinylogous aldol reaction of o-(allyloxy)phenyl ketoesters or o-(allylamino)phenyl ketoesters has been developed. This reaction provides ready access to 3-hydroxy-2,3-disubstituted dihydrobenzofurans and indolines in high yields with excellent chemoselectivity and diastereoselectivity. An acid-promoted dehydration of such products further extends the utility of the reaction to the synthesis of 2-alkenyl benzofurans and indoles.

Abstract
A new gold(I) self-relay catalysis reaction enabling the annulative oxygenation of propargylic alcohols with various O-nucleophiles, such as carboxylic acids, alcohols and TBHP, is reported, producing a series of functionalized benzofurans in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. This protocol benefits from the π- and σ-Lewis acid capability of gold complexes, demonstrating high molecular convergence, broad substrate flexibility, high functional group compatibility and mild conditions.

Abstract
A novel Pd-catalyzed chemo- and regiocontrolled tandem cyclization/cross-coupling reaction of 3-alkynyl chromone with aryl iodide was developed for the synthesis of 4H-furo[3,2-c]chromenes and xanthones. The difunctionalization of alkynes through O-attack/5-exo-dig and C-attack/6-endo-dig cyclization was reported by this rare approach, which was selectively controlled by the addition of KF or a bidentate phosphine ligand. A one-pot tandem process was demonstrated directly from γ-alkynyl-1,3-diketone for this method.

Abstract
Two acid-catalyzed tandem reactions between 4-hydroxy-1-methylquinolin-2(1H)-one and propargylic alcohols are described. Depending mainly on the propargylic alcohol used, these tandem reactions proceed via either a Friedel–Crafts-type allenylation followed by 6-endo-dig cyclization sequence to form pyrano[3,2-c]quinolones or a Friedel–Crafts-type alkylation and 5-exo-dig ring closure sequence to afford furo[3,2-c]quinolones in moderate-to-high yields. The pyrano[3,2-c]quinolones products could be further transformed to tetracyclic 4,9-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[lmn]phenanthridin-5-one derivatives. Abstract
A novel synthesis method for the construction of 3-coumaranones from the reaction of two molecules, calcium carbide and salicylaldehyde, was reported. Various 2-methyl-2-vinylbenzofuran-3(2H)-ones could be obtained in moderate yields in the absence of a metal catalyst. The salient features of this protocol involve widely available starting materials, an inexpensive and easy-to-handle alkyne source, and a cost-efficient route. The reaction mechanism was verified by density functional theory calculations of possible intermediates and corresponding transition states.

Abstract
A new methodology for the construction of methyl-substituted benzofuran rings from the reactions of calcium carbide with salicylaldehyde p-tosylhydrazones/2-hydroxyacetophenone p-tosylhydrazones is described. Various 2-methylbenzofurans and 2,3-dimethylbenzofurans could be obtained in satisfactory yield by using a cuprous chloride catalyst. The advantages of this protocol include the use of a readily available and easy-to-handle acetylene source and simple workup procedure.

Abstract
Disclosed herein is an efficient synthetic route for the synthesis of functionalized 2-benzyl benzo[b]furans via a regioselective 5-exo-trig intramolecular oxidative cyclization of ortho-cinnamyl phenols using [PdCl2(CH3CN)2] as catalyst and benzoquinone as an oxidant. Further, a sequential ortho-cinnamylation of phenols using cinnamyl alcohols catalyzed by Re2O7, followed by an oxidative cyclization using the above Pd catalyst, is performed. The reaction showed broad substrate scope with good to excellent yields.

Abstract
A tandem Ag-catalyzed 5-exo-dig cyclization and catalyst free γ-azidation for benzofuranyl/indolyl methyl azides is presented. The adducts are further transformed to useful triazole-, tetrazole-, amide-, amine-, and pyrido-derivatives.

Abstract
The synthesis of ustusoranes A, B, and E, pergillin, dihydropergillin, (±)-penicisochroman A, and (-)-brassicadiol, starting from optically active (R)-benzolactone, is described. The synthesis of ustusoranes A and E established the absolute configurations of these natural products. The synthesis of pergillin and (±)-penicisochroman A led to the structural revision of aspergiones E and F. This study clearly indicates that (R)-benzolactone is a potential intermediate in the synthesis of natural benzofuranoids.

Abstract
We describe herein a silver-catalyzed conversion of 1-(2-aminophenyl)-propargyl alcohols to 4-substituted 3-tosylaminoquinolines using TsN3 as an amino surrogate. Controlled reactions reveal the pathway consisting of Ag(I)-catalyzed 5-exo-dig cyclization, catalyst-free (2 + 3) cycloaddition, and ring-expansive rearrangement via nitrogen expulsion. As a support study, we show that the cyclic enamines in similar conditions produce amidines via a C-C bond migration.

Abstract
The cycloisomerization of a bicyclo[4.1.0] substrate into 4,5-dihydrobenzo[b]furan was investigated by using density functional theory (DFT). Comparative studies on four models (model I: with W(CO)5 and NEt3; model II: without NEt3; model III: without W(CO)5; model IV: without W(CO)5 and NEt3) indicate that this reaction is the most likely to proceed under model I to give the product. The ring closure process is greatly associated with the H1 and H2 transfer processes, because in the H1 transfer process, the carbene C3 atom is mainly stabilized by W(CO)5, and in the H2 atom transfer process the C3 atom is mainly stabilized by the O1 atom. The rearrangement of 12 to give 14 is the rate-determining step of this reaction with a free energy barrier of 31.0 kcal/mol. The presence of W(CO)5 can not only promote the H1 transfer and the ring closure (1→6-[W]) but can also be slightly favorable for the isomerization of 6-[W] into 11-[W](6-[W]→11-[W]). NEt3 mainly has an effect in the 6-[W]→11-[W] stage, in which it mainly plays proton-transfer bridge and proton-adsorption roles.

Abstract
A recyclable palladium-catalyzed synthesis of 2-methylene-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-3-ols 2 by heterocyclization of 2-(1-hydroxyprop-2-ynyl)phenols 1 in an ionic liquid medium (BmimBF4) is presented. The process takes place under relatively mild conditions (100 °C, 5 h) in the presence of catalytic amounts (2 mol %) of PdI2 in conjunction with KI (5 equiv with respect to PdI2) and an organic base, such as morpholine (1 equiv with respect to 1), to give 2 in high yields (70%-86%). The PdI2-KI catalytic system could be recycled up to six times without appreciable loss of activity. Moreover, products 2 could be easily converted in a one-pot fashion into 2-hydroxymethylbenzofurans 3 (52%-71%, based on 1) and 2-methoxymethylbenzofurans 4 (52%-80%, based on 1) by acid-catalyzed allylic isomerization or allylic nucleophilic substitution.

Abstract
Hydroamidation of electron-deficient terminal alkynes by amides in presence of Pd-catalyst has been exploited for the stereoselective synthesis of Z-enamides. The possible intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amido proton and carbonyl oxygen of ester group provides the extra stability to the Z-isomer of vinyl-palladium complex, which subsequently undergoes protodepalladation and leads to the Z-enamide selectively. This process is found to be mild and operationally simple with broad substrate scope.

Abstract
An efficient access to 2-substituted 3-arylbenzofurans through a palladium-catalyzed C3 direct arylation of 2-substituted benzofurans with aryl bromides is described. The scope and limitation of this reaction was studied. The method tolerates a variety of functional groups on the aryl halide and has been successfully extended to polysubstituted benzofurans to obtain the corresponding 3-arylbenzofurans with good to excellent yields.

Abstract
This article gives an overview of synthetic approaches to the 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran ring system with an emphasis on recently developed methods. The synthetic approaches are classified according to the key bond(s) formed during the construction of the dihydrobenzofuran skeleton, and approaches of relevance to the synthesis of natural products are highlighted.
