Abstract
1H NMR spectroscopic studies using BINOL as a chiral solvating agent (CSA) for a scalemic sulfiniminoboronic acid (SIBA) have revealed concentration- and enantiopurity-dependent variations in the chemical shifts of diagnostic imine protons used to determine enantiopurity levels. 11B/15N NMR spectroscopic studies and X-ray structural investigations revealed that unlike other iminoboronate species, BINOL-SIBA assemblies do not contain N-B coordination bonds, with 1H NMR NOESY experiments indicating that intermolecular H-bonding networks between BINOL and the SIBA analyte are responsible for these variations. These effects can lead to diastereomeric signal overlap at certain er values that could potentially lead to enantiopurity/configuration misassignments. Consequently, it is recommended that hydrogen-bonding-CSA-based 1H NMR protocols should be repeated using both CSA enantiomers to ensure that any concentration- and/or er-dependent variations in diagnostic chemical shifts are accounted for when determining the enantiopurity of a scalemic analyte.

Abstract
Chiral amino-group compounds are of significance for human health, such as biogenic amino acids (AAs), dipeptides, and even various drugs. Enantiospecific discrimination of these chiral compounds is vital in diagnosing diseases, identifying pathological biomarkers and enhancing pharmaceutical chemistry research. Here, we report a simple and rapid 19F NMR-based strategy to differentiate chiral AAs, dipeptides, and amines, that were derivatized with (R)-2-(2-fluorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetic acid ((R)-2FHA). As a result, 19 proteinogenic AAs (37 isomers) as well as Gly could be concurrently resolved. Moreover, various mirror-image dipeptides, such as Ser-His, Leu-Leu, and Ala-Ala, were commendably recognized. Intriguingly, we found that the absolute configuration of AAs in the N-terminus of dipeptides decided the relative 19F chemical shifts between two enantiomers. Besides, the ability of this method for enantiodiscrimination was further demonstrated by non-AA amines, including aromatic and aliphatic amines, and even amines having chiral centers several carbons away from the amino-group. The structurally similar antibiotics, amoxicillin and ampicillin, were well discriminated. Furthermore, this method accurately determines the de or dr values of non-racemic mixtures. Therefore, our strategy provides an effective approach for 19F NMR-based enantiodiscrimination and diastereomeric purity determination of amino-group compounds.

Abstract
Chiral resolution is very important and still a big challenge due to different biological activity and same physicochemical property of one pair (R)- and (S)-isomer. There is no doubt that chiral selectors are essentially needed for chiral resolution, which can stereoselectively interact with a pair of isomers. To date, a large amount of optically active helical polymers as chiral selectors have been synthesized via two strategies. First, the target helical polymers are derived from natural polysaccharide such as cellulose and amylose. Second, they can be synthesized by polymerization of chiral monomers. Alternatively, an achiral polymer is prepared first followed by static or dynamic chiral induction. Furthermore, a part of them is harnessed as chiral stationary phases for chromatographic chiral separation and as chiral adsorbents for enantioselective adsorption/crystallization, resulting in good enantioseparation efficiency. In summary, the present review will focus on recent progress of the polymers with optical activity for chiral resolution, especially the literature published in the past 10 years. In addition, development prospects and future challenges of optically active helical polymers will be discussed in detail.

Abstract
Ribose plays an important role in the process of life. Excessive ribose in the human cerebrospinal fluid or urine can be used as an early diagnostic marker of leukoencephalopathy. Fluorinated phenylboronic acid combined with 19F NMR spectroscopy was a powerful method for molecular recognition. However, phenylboronic acid-based sensors for selective detection of ribose are rarely reported in the literature. In this study, the rapid and highly selective recognition of ribose was studied by 19F NMR and 2-fluorophenylboric acid. It was found that 2-fluoro-phenylboric acid was an appropriate 19F NMR-based sensor molecule for the determination of ribose under physiological conditions with high selectivity and robust anti-interference ability. When 2-fluorophenylboric acid was used for the detection of ribose in human urine without any sample pretreatment, a limit of detection of 78 μM was obtained at room temperature under given 19F NMR experimental conditions (400 MHz, 512 scans, ca. 12 min), which can well meet the needs of practical application.

Abstract
Glucose is a significant analyte both in biology and biomedical science, it is of great importance to selectively detect glucose both in body fluids and complex mixture. In this study, a simple 19F NMR based sensor was synthesized easily, which exhibited a high selectivity and robust anti-interference ability toward glucose detection both in a mixture containing up to 10 saccharides and human urine samples without any pretreatment. Combined with this sensor system, glucose could be well detected in human urine samples and the limit of detection was 0.41 mM by using a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer with 128 scans (ca. 4 min). This method had a potential for specific detection of glucose in complex mixture and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus related diseases in body fluid.

Abstract
We have demonstrated the efficient chiral analysis of fluorine-containing compounds by 19F NMR spectroscopy. The highly sensitive fluorine nucleus allowed chiral analysis of complex mixtures and even asymmetric reaction mixtures of multisubstrates. A single 19F NMR experiment was sufficient to determine the enantiomeric excesses and yields of the five products simultaneously.

Abstract
A practically simple three-component chiral derivatization protocol has been developed to determine the enantiopurity of eight S-chiral sulfinamides by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopic analysis, based on their treatment with a 2-formylphenylboronic acid template and enantiopure pinanediol to afford a mixture of diastereomeric sulfiniminoboronate esters whose diastereomeric ratio is an accurate reflection of the enantiopurity of the parent sulfinamide.

Abstract
The Bull-James boronic acid assembly is used simultaneously as a chiral auxiliary for kinetic resolution and as a chiral shift reagent for in situ enantiomeric excess (ee) determination by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Chiral terminal alkyne-containing amines, and their corresponding chiral triazoles formed via CuAAC, were probed in situ. Selectivity factors of up to s = 4 were imparted and measured, accurate to within ±3% when compared to chiral GC.

Abstract
Abstract
Rapid development of research on the chemistry of boronic acids is connected with their applications in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, materials’ chemistry, biology and medicine. In many applications Lewis acidity of boron atoms plays an important role. Special group of arylboronic acids are fluoro-substituted compounds, in which the electron withdrawing character of fluorine atoms influences their properties. The present paper deals with fluoro-substituted boronic acids and their derivatives: esters, benzoxaboroles and boroxines. Properties of these compounds, i.e. acidity, hydrolytic stability, structures in crystals and in solution as well as spectroscopic properties are discussed. In the next part examples of important applications are given.

Abstract
The identification and discrimination of diols is of fundamental importance in medical diagnostics, such as measuring the contents of glucose in the urine of diabetes patients. Diol sensors are often based on fluorophore-appended boronic acids, but these severely lack discriminatory power and their response is one-dimensional. As an alternative strategy, we present the use of fluorinated boronic acid-appended pyridinium salts in combination with 19F NMR spectroscopy. A pool of 59 (bio)analytes was screened, containing monosaccharides, phosphorylated and N-acetylated sugars, polyols, carboxylic acids, nucleotides, and amines. The majority of analytes could be clearly detected and discriminated. In addition, glucose and fructose could be distinguished up to 1:9 molar ratio in mixtures. Crucially, the receptors feature high sensitivity and selectivity and are water-soluble, and their 19F-NMR analyte fingerprint is pH-robust, thereby making them particularly well-suited for medical application. Finally, to demonstrate this applicability, glucose could be detected in synthetic urine samples down to 1 mM using merely a 188 MHz NMR spectrometer.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for determination of the yield, enantiomeric/diasteriomeric excess (ee/de), and absolute configuration of crude chiral diols without the need of work-up and product isolation in a high throughput setting is described. This approach utilizes a self-assembled iminoboronate ester formed as a product by dynamic covalent self-assembly of a chiral diol with an enantiopure fluorescent amine such as tryptophan methyl ester or tryptophanol and 2-formylphenylboronic acid. The resulting diastereomeric boronates display different photophysical properties and allow for fluorescence-based ee determination of molecules containing a 1,2- or 1,3-diol moiety. This method has been utilized for the screening of ee in a number of chiral diols including atorvastatin, a statin used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Noyori asymmetric hydrogenation of benzil was performed in a highly parallel fashion with errors <1 % ee confirming the feasibility of the systematic examination of crude products from the parallel asymmetric synthesis in real time and in a high-throughput screening (HTS) fashion.

Abstract
Polycarbonates are routinely utilized for diverse medicinal applications and are highly efficacious scaffolds for drug delivery and antimicrobial treatments. In order to provide for robust, dynamic platforms for biomedical applications, we have developed new routes for the incorporation of boronic acids into the polycarbonate backbone. These routes take advantage of straightforward postsynthesis modification of established polycarbonate backbones, enabling the preparation of a diverse array of boronic acid functionalized polycarbonates from readily accessible polycarbonates. In particular, this approach circumvents the need for de novo monomer synthesis, functional group incompatibilities, and deprotection steps that often limit other methods. This strategy has been demonstrated using a broad array of unprotected boronic acids to produce both neutral and cationic boronic acid functionalized polycarbonates.

Abstract
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful tool for the elucidation of chemical structure and chiral recognition. In the last decade, the number of probes, media, and experiments to analyze chiral environments has rapidly increased. The evaluation of chiral molecules and systems has become a routine task in almost all NMR laboratories, allowing for the determination of molecular connectivities and the construction of spatial relationships. Among the features that improve the chiral recognition abilities by NMR is the application of different nuclei. The simplicity of the multinuclear NMR spectra relative to 1H, the minimal influence of the experimental conditions, and the larger shift dispersion make these nuclei especially suitable for NMR analysis. Herein, the recent advances in multinuclear (19F, 31P, 13C, and 77Se) NMR spectroscopy for chiral recognition of organic compounds are presented. The review describes new chiral derivatizing agents and chiral solvating agents used for stereodiscrimination and the assignment of the absolute configuration of small organic compounds.

Abstract
Self-assembly and directed-assembly are two very important aspects of supramolecular chemistry. As a young postgraduate student working in Canada with Tom Fyles my introduction to Supramolecular Chemistry was through the self-assembly of phospholipid membranes to form vesicles for which we were developing unimolecular and self-assembling transporter molecules. The next stage of my development as a scientist was in Japan with Seiji Shinkai where in a “Eureka” moment, the boronic acid templating unit (directed-assembly) of Wulff was combined with photoinduced electron transfer systems pioneered by De Silva. The result was a turn-on fluorescence sensor for saccharides; this simple result has continued to fuel my research to the present day. Throughout my career as well as assembling molecules, I have enjoyed bringing together researchers in order to develop collaborative networks. This is where molecules meet people resulting in assemblies worth more than the individual “molecule” or “researcher”. My role in developing networks with Japan was rewarded by the award of a Daiwa-Adrian Prize in 2013 and I was recently rewarded for developing networks with China with an Inaugural CASE Prize in 2015.

Abstract
Synthetic receptors for diols that incorporate boronic acid motifs have been developed as new sensors and separation tools. Utilizing the reversible interactions of diols with boronic acids to form boronic esters under new binding regimes has provided new hydrogel constructs that have found use as dye-displacement sensors and electrophoretic separation tools; similarly, molecular boronic-acid-containing chemosensors were constructed that offer applications in the sensing of diols. This review provides a somewhat-personal perspective of developments in boronic-acid-mediated sensing and separation, placed in the context of the seminal works of others in the area, as well as offering a concise summary of the contributions of the co-authors in the area.

Abstract
A practically simple three-component Strecker reaction for the asymmetric synthesis of enantiopure α-arylglycines has been developed. Addition of a range of aryl-aldehydes to a solution of sodium cyanide and (S)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylamine affords highly crystalline (S,S)-α-aminonitriles that are easily obtained in diastereomerically pure form. Heating the resultant (S,S)-α-aminonitriles in 6 M aqueous HCl at reflux resulted in cleavage of their chiral auxiliary fragments and concomitant hydrolysis of their nitrile groups to afford enantiopure (S)-α-arylglycines. The enantiopurities of these (S)-α-arylglycines were determined via derivatization of their corresponding methyl esters with 2-formylphenylboronic acid and (S)-BINOL, followed by (1)H NMR spectroscopic analysis of the resultant mixtures of diastereomeric iminoboronate esters.

Abstract
A chiral ferrocene-based boronic acid interacts with (R)- and (S)-Binol to form two complexes that exhibit significantly different ferrocene-based electrode potentials. This difference in redox behavior can be exploited to demonstrate in principle how high levels of enantiomeric excess in a mixture of enantiomers can be quantified and read-out using an electrochemical method.

Abstract
Benzeneboronate of catecholic carboxyl methyl esters, N-acetyldopamine, coumarin and catechol estrogens were prepared as crystalline derivatives in high yield. Related catechol compounds with extra polar functional group(s) (OH, NH2) do not form or only partially form unstable cyclic boronate derivatives.
