Abstract
Herein we report a new synthetic entry to the strained cyclophane alkaloid natural product, haouamine A. The successful strategy featured a rhodium-catalyzed diazo-insertion reaction to install the all-carbon quaternary center and a rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular aziridination reaction to establish the nitrogen-bearing stereocenter, of the target molecule. Most notably, a late-stage, site-selective and strain-accelerated oxidation of a "deoxygenated" macrocyclic intermediate was successfully implemented, and in doing so provided a novel solution to the infamous biphenol cyclophane system of haouamine A.

Abstract
An efficient, short-staged synthesis of cis-fused indeno[2,1-b]- and indeno[1,2-c]pyridin-2-ones, starting from 2-pyridones, using magnesiates of type R3MgLi as nucleophilic and deprotonation agents, mediated by benzyne generated in situ, under optimized conditions, is described. Following the developed protocol, rare C4a-arylsubstituted indeno[2,1-b]pyridones, resembling the core of haouamine, were obtained. The protocol offering the one-pot synthesis directly from 2-pyridone is also described.

Abstract
The efficiency of the intramolecular carbonickelation of substituted allylic ethers and amines has been studied to evaluate the influence of the groups borne by the double bond on this cyclization. The results show that when this reaction takes place, it affords only the 5-exo-trig cyclization products, viz. dihydrobenzofurans or indoles. Depending on the tethered heteroatom (O or N), the outcome of the cyclization differs. While allylic ethers are relatively poor substrates that undergo a side elimination and need an intracyclic double bond to proceed, allylic amines react well and afford indoline and indole derivatives. Finally, the synthesis of the trinuclear ACE core of a morphine-like skeleton was achieved by using NiBr2bipy catalysis.

Abstract
A total synthesis of the complex, bent aromatic ring-containing marine alkaloid haouamine A is achieved through a route in which every step (with the exception of the final deprotection) is performed on a gram-scale. This is accomplished through the development of a method for the dehydrogenation of cyclohexenones that allows for point-to-planar chirality transfer. This strategy makes it possible to program the desired atropisomeric outcome from a simple chiral cyclohexenone. By synthesizing atrop-haouamine A, this work has firmly established that natural haouamine exists as a single, nonequilibrating atropisomer. Finally, biological investigations demonstrate that the bent aromatic ring of this natural product is critical for anticancer activity against PC3 cells.

Abstract
A full account of synthetic efforts towards the indeno-tetrahydropyridine core of haouamine A is presented. Initial failed strategies led to the unexpected discovery of a mild abnormal Chichibabin pyridine synthesis and provided knowledge and inspiration for the development of a cascade annulation that has enabled rapid and scalable access to the core in either racemic or enantiopure form.
