Benzodifurantrione: A Stable Phenylogous Enol

Colour and constitution of conjugate bases of benzodifurantrione, its ring-opened derivatives and benzodifuranone dye analogues

The observation of ready deprotonation of the phenylogous enol of benzodifurantrione (BDT) to give a bright violet conjugate base has led to two follow up explorations. Extension of BDT enol by insertion of a p-phenylene unit into the enol C-O bond gives the known bright red 4-hydroxylated benzodifuranone dyes. Their deprotonation results in previously unreported near infrared-absorbing conjugate bases. These appear to aggregate in solution, the more so in less polar solvents. Ring-opened derivatives of BDT containing α-dicarbonyl substituents also give coloured conjugate bases, but α-keto-ester and -anilide derivatives differ substantially (ester yellow; anilide intense red). Investigation of this nonintuitive difference leads to the conclusion that while the anilide is essentially planar the ester is nonplanar. The contrast in conformation impacts on the auxochromic effects of the otherwise closely related α-dicarbonyl substituents and thus the variation in colour. The latter observation has potential across colour chemistry in general. In contrast to the readily observed BDT enol, no evidence has been adduced for enol tautomers amongst the ring-opened analogues.

A quantitative study of vapor diffusions for crystallizations: rates and solvent parameter changes

Vapor diffusion crystallizations are among the most versatile methods for growing X-ray quality crystals. While many experimental sections describe the successful use of various solvent combinations, the literature has been entirely lacking in quantitative data (rates, measures of solvent strength changes) that might allow more informed planning rather than simple trial-and-error approaches. We here report the diffusion-induced volume changes for 44 solvent combinations over the first 60 h under standardized conditions, plus six more combinations that exhibit little or no volume changes. Additionally, the inner and outer vial compositions at 24 h were determined, and the resulting changes in solvation parameters were quantified using Hansen solubility parameters. Some general preliminary effects of changes in volume ratios and scale are described. These results identify two dozen solvent combinations with larger changes in solvent parameters than the very commonly used diethyl ether/dichloromethane example. These results should allow a more informed approach to the execution of vapor diffusion crystallizations than has previously been possible.

Stable acyclic aliphatic solid enols: synthesis, characterization, X-ray structure analysis and calculations

A synthetic approach to stable enols was introduced and series of acyclic aliphatic solid enols were obtained and characterized. Relationship between the structure and the stability of these enols was discussed. Gaussian 09 calculations had been carried out to rationalize the stability of the enols. These enol structures were confirmed by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, MS, IR, partly by single crystal X-ray structure analysis and the protons exchange experiments. This work showed that very stable acyclic aliphatic enols can be synthesized efficiently without any purification.
