Abstract
The synthesis of a new family of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) core dimers and G0 dendrimers end-capped with two and four β-cyclodextrin (βCD) moieties was performed by click-chemistry conjugation, varying the spacers attached to the core. The structure analyses were achieved in DMSO-d6 and the self-inclusion process was studied in D2O by 1H-NMR spectroscopy for all platforms. It was demonstrated that the interaction with adamantane carboxylic acid (AdCOOH) results in a guest-induced shift of the self-inclusion effect, demonstrating the full host ability of the βCD units in these new platforms without any influence of the spacer. The results of the quantitative size and water solubility measurements demonstrated the equivalence between the novel EDTA-βCD platforms and the classical PAMAM-βCD dendrimer. Finally, we determined the toxicity for all EDTA-βCD platforms in four different cell lines: two human breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231), human cervical adenocarcinoma cancer cells (HeLa), and human lung adenocarcinoma cells (SK-LU-1). The new EDTA-βCD carriers did not present any cytotoxicity in the tested cell lines, which showed that these new classes of platforms are promising candidates for drug delivery.

Abstract
Transition-metal catalysts are powerful tools for carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions that are difficult to achieve using native enzymes. Enzymes that exhibit inherent selectivities and reactivities through host-guest interactions have inspired widespread interest in incorporating enzymatic behavior into transition-metal catalytic systems that highly efficiently produce enantiopure compounds. Nevertheless, bio-inspired transition-metal catalysts that are highly enantioselective and reactive have rarely been reported. In this study, we applied γ-cyclodextrin-imidazolium salts to the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric arylations of aldehydes. The method exhibits wide substrate scope and the corresponding arylcarbinols are obtained in excellent yields under optimized conditions, with enantiomeric excesses of up to 96% observed. Kinetic and competition experiments revealed that self-inclusion of the Rh complex contributes to the high enantioselectivity and reactivity achieved by this catalytic system. Thus, this bio-inspired self-inclusion strategy is promising for the development of highly enantioselective and reactive transition-metal catalysts for asymmetric carbon-carbon bond formation.

Abstract
A branched [8]catenane from an efficient one-pot synthesis (72 % HPLC yield, 59 % isolated yield) featuring the simultaneous use of three kinds of templates and cucurbit[6]uril-mediated azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CBAAC) for ring-closing is reported. Design and assembly of the [8]catenane precursors are unexpectedly complex that can involve cooperating, competing and non-influencing interactions. Due to the branched structure, dynamics of the [8]catenane can be modulated in different extent by rigidifying/loosening the mechanical bonds at different regions by using solvent polarity, acid-base and metal ions as the stimuli. This work not only highlights the importance of understanding the delicate interplay of the weak and non-obvious supramolecular interactions in the synthesis of high-order [n]catenane, but also demonstrates a complex control of dynamics and flexibility for exploiting [n]catenanes applications.

Abstract
![]()
We
report how the nanoconfined environment, introduced by the mechanical
bonds within an electrochemically switchable bistable [2]rotaxane,
controls the rotation of a fluorescent molecular rotor, namely, an
8-phenyl-substituted boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY). The electrochemical
switching of the bistable [2]rotaxane induces changes in the ground-state
coconformation and in the corresponding excited-state properties of
the BODIPY rotor. In the starting redox state, when no external potential
is applied, the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT4+) ring component encircles the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) unit
on the dumbbell component, leaving the BODIPY rotor unhindered and
exhibiting low fluorescence. Upon oxidation of the TTF unit to a TTF2+ dication, the CBPQT4+ ring is forced toward the
molecular rotor, leading to an increased energy barrier for the excited
state to rotate the rotor into the state with a high nonradiative
rate constant, resulting in an overall 3.4-fold fluorescence enhancement.
On the other hand, when the solvent polarity is high enough to stabilize
the excited charge-transfer state between the BODIPY rotor and the
CBPQT4+ ring, movement of the ring toward the BODIPY rotor
produces an unexpectedly strong fluorescence signal decrease as the
result of photoinduced electron transfer from the BODIPY rotor to
the CBPQT4+ ring. The nanoconfinement effect introduced
by mechanical bonding can effectively lead to modulation of the physicochemical
properties as observed in this bistable [2]rotaxane. On account of
the straightforward synthetic strategy and the facile modulation of
switchable electrochromic behavior, our approach could pave the way
for the development of new stimuli-responsive materials based on mechanically
interlocked molecules for future electro-optical applications, such
as sensors, molecular memories, and molecular logic gates.

Abstract
Crude glycerol (C3H8O3) is a major by-product of biodiesel production from vegetable oils and animal fats. The increased biodiesel production in the last two decades has forced glycerol production up and prices down. However, crude glycerol from biodiesel production is not of adequate purity for industrial uses, including food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The purification process of crude glycerol to reach the quality standards required by industry is expensive and dificult. Novel uses for crude glycerol can reduce the price of biodiesel and make it an economical alternative to diesel. Moreover, novel uses may improve environmental impact, since crude glycerol disposal is expensive and dificult. Glycerol is a versatile molecule with many potential applications in fermentation processes and synthetic chemistry. It serves as a glucose substitute in microbial growth media and as a precursor in the synthesis of a number of commercial intermediates or fine chemicals. Chlorinated derivatives of glycerol are an important class of such chemicals. The main focus of this review is the conversion of glycerol to chlorinated derivatives, such as epichlorohydrin and chlorohydrins, and their further use in the synthesis of additional downstream products. Downstream products include non-cyclic compounds with allyl, nitrile, azide and other functional groups, as well as oxazolidinones and triazoles, which are cyclic compounds derived from ephichlorohydrin and chlorohydrins. The polymers and ionic liquids, which use glycerol as an initial building block, are highlighted, as well.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cone-shaped molecular rings that have been widely employed in supramolecular/host–guest chemistry because of their low cost, high biocompatibility, stability, wide availability in multiple sizes, and their promiscuity for binding a range of molecular guests in water. Consequently, CD-based host–guest complexes are often employed as templates for the synthesis of mechanically bonded molecules (mechanomolecules) such as catenanes, rotaxanes, and polyrotaxanes in particular. The conical shape and cyclodirectionality of the CD “bead” gives rise to a symmetry-breaking effect when it is threaded onto a molecular “string”; even symmetrical guests are rendered asymmetric by the presence of an encircling CD host. This review focuses on the stereochemical implications of this symmetry-breaking effect in mechanomolecules, including orientational isomerism, mechanically planar chirality, and topological chirality, as well as how they support applications in regioselective and stereoselective chemical synthesis, the design of molecular machine prototypes, and the development of advanced materials.

Abstract
The synthesis of a pH-sensitive two-station [1]rotaxane molecular switch by self-entanglement of a non-interlocked hermaphrodite molecule, containing an anilinium and triazole moieties, is reported. The anilinium was chosen as the best template for the macrocycle benzometaphenylene[25]crown-8 (BMP25C8) and allowed the self-entanglement of the molecule. The equilibrium between the hermaphrodite molecule and the pseudo[1]rotaxane was studied by (1)H NMR spectroscopy: the best conditions of self-entanglement were found in the less polar solvent CD(2)Cl(2) and at high dilution. The triazole moiety was then benzylated to afford a benzyltriazolium moiety, which then played a dual role. On one hand, it acts as a bulky gate to trap the BMP25C8, thus to avoid any self-disentanglement of the molecular architecture. On another hand, it acts as a second molecular station for the macrocycle. At acidic pH, the BMP25C8 resides around the best anilinium molecular station, displaying the lasso [1]rotaxane in a loosened conformation. The deprotonation of the anilinium molecular station triggers the shuttling of the BMP25C8 around the triazolium moiety, therefore tightening the lasso.
