Abstract
Chiral acrylic esters derived from biomass were developed as models to have a better insight in the aryl-vinyl π-stacking interactions. Quantum chemical calculations, NMR studies and experimental evidences demonstrated the presence of equilibriums of at least four different conformations: π-stacked and face-to-edge, each of them in an s-cis/s-trans conformation. The results show that the stabilization produced by the π-π interaction makes the π-stacked conformation predominant in solution and this stabilization is slightly affected by the electron density of the aromatic counterpart.

Abstract
The permanganate-mediated oxidative cyclization of a series of 2-methylenehept-5-eneoates bearing different chiral auxiliaries was investigated, leading to the discovery of trans-2-tritylcyclohexanol (TTC) as a highly effective chiral controller for the formation of the 2,5-substituted THF diol product with high diastereoselectivity (dr ∼97:3). Chiral resolution of (±)-TTC, prepared in one step from cyclohexene oxide, afforded (-)-(1S,2R)-TTC (er >99:1), which was applied to the synthesis of (+)-trans-(2S,5S)-linalool oxide.

Abstract
N-Sulfinyl amines have been successfully employed as nitrogen nucleophiles for the asymmetric intramolecular aza-Michael reaction. The synthetic strategy involves a cross-metathesis reaction followed by the Michael-type cyclization, either in a base-catalyzed two-step procedure or in a tandem fashion. The developed methodology allows access to chiral substituted pyrrolidines and piperidines bearing one or two stereocenters and it has been applied to the synthesis of the piperidine alkaloid (-)-pinidinol.

Abstract
A conjugate amination of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with lithium amides has become a powerful method of N-C bond-forming reactions. Chiral ligand-controlled asymmetric version of the conjugate amination of enoates was developed for practical bench chemistry, giving the enantioenriched amination product with over 99 % ee. In situ diastereoselective alkylation of resulting lithium enolates allowed us to form vicinal N-C and C-C bonds in a one-pot operation. This protocol enabled us to realize a short-step asymmetric synthesis of otamixaban key intermediate. Treatment of product 3-benzylamino- and 3-allylaminoesters with tert-butyllithium gave five- or seven-membered lactams through [1,2]- or [2,3]-rearrangement of intermediate β-lactams. Isolated C-C double bonds were also found to accept intramolecular aminolithiation affording the corresponding hydroamination products. Chiral lithiophilic ligand-catalyzed reaction gave enantioenriched hydroamination products with high ee. Stereoselective intramolecular aminolithiation of allylaminoalkenes was coupled with subsequent carbolithiation to give doubly cyclized product amines.

Abstract
An effective one-pot synthesis of polyhydroxylated quinolizidines from 1-C-(2'-oxo-4'-pentenyl)-5-azido-C-glycofuranosides was developed. Reduction of the 5-azido group using triphenylphosphine followed by base treatment produced quinolizidines in good yield. The base-mediated ring-opening beta-elimination produced an acyclic alpha,beta-conjugated ketone as a Michael acceptor, which was followed by an intramolecular nitrogen conjugate addition to form an aza-C-glycopyranoside intermediate. Meanwhile, the beta,gamma-double bond of the aglycon migrated under the basic conditions to form another alpha,beta-conjugated ketone. The subsequent intramolecular conjugate addition by the azasugar nitrogen led to the formation of the quinolizidines in a highly stereoselective manner. The stereoselectivity of the first conjugate addition giving azasugar is affected by the stereochemistry of the monosaccharide substrate, whereas the stereoselectivity in the second conjugate addition was likely directed entirely by steric repulsion from the azasugar.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The asymmetric aza-Michael reaction of metal benzylamides to alpha,beta-unsaturated amides derived from the chiral amino alcohol (S,S)-(+)-pseudoephedrine has been studied in detail. A deep study of the most important experimental parameters (solvent, temperature, nucleophile structure, influence of additives) has been carried out, showing that the reaction usually proceeds with good yields and diastereoselectivities, although the experimental conditions have to be modified depending on the substitution pattern of the conjugate acceptor. Additionally, a very interesting facial selectivity inversion has been observed when manipulating the structure of the chiral auxiliary, which has allowed a diastereodivergent procedure to be set up for performing asymmetric aza-Michael reactions using the same chirality source. Finally, the adducts obtained in the asymmetric aza-Michael reaction have proven to be very versatile synthetic intermediates in the preparation of other interesting compounds such as beta-amino esters, gamma-amino alcohols, and beta-amino ketones in highly enantioenriched form.

Abstract
A full account of the development of the first catalytic manifold for the additions of allylboronates to aldehydes is described. The thermal additions (both diastereospecific and enantioselective) of 2-carboxyester 3,3-disubstituted allylboronates 1 to both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes give biologically and synthetically important exo-methylene butyrolactones 2 containing a beta-quaternary carbon center. Although the thermal reaction requires 14 d at room temperature to reach completion, the presence of certain metal salts allows for a 12-16 h reaction while preserving the diastereospecificity observed in the uncatalyzed process. Preliminary mechanistic studies on the origin of the catalytic effect are described as well as stereoselective transformations of lactones 2 into cyclic and acyclic stereotriads with potential usefulness as synthetic intermediates.

Abstract
Chiral nonracemic beta-amino esters were prepared in good yields and enantioselectivities using the diastereoselective conjugate addition of nitrogen nucleophiles to alpha,beta-unsaturated amides derived from (S,S)-(+)-pseudoephedrine as the key step. In this way, several beta-amino amide adducts were prepared using different conjugate acceptors and two different lithium benzylamides as nucleophiles. These adducts were easily converted in only one step, into the final, highly enantioenriched beta-amino esters

Abstract
A convenient method to determine the absolute configuration of trans-2-aryl cyclohexanols, 1-aryl alcohols and amines was achieved. This method takes advantage of the 1H NMR spectroscopic observations of the remarkable high-field shift of C18-CH3 protons caused by the aromatic shielding effect. It is based on a discrimination of the difference of the environments in two diastereomers derived from 3 beta-acetoxy-5-etienic acid. Furthermore, it was observed that the corresponding diastereomeric derivatives of the pyridyl alcohols were simply separated by extraction based on the difference in their basicity.

Abstract
The Rh-TangPhos complex is an efficient hydrogenation catalyst for making chiral beta-amino acid derivatives. With the Rh-TangPhos system, high enantioselectivities (up to 99.6%) and turnover numbers have been obtained in the hydrogenation of E/Z isomeric mixtures of both beta-alkyl and beta-aryl beta-(acylamino)acrylates. Abstract
[reaction: see text] Rh-Me-BDPMI (1a) complex can be an effective catalyst for the hydrogenations of (E)- and (Z)-beta-(acylamino)acrylates, in which the Z-isomers hydrogenated with the same or even higher ee values than the corresponding E-isomers. The conversion yield and enantioselectivity of E- and Z-isomers were largely dependent on the solvent, and thus, the E-isomers were hydrogenated more effectively in CH(2)Cl(2), whereas the Z-isomers were hydrogenated more effectively in polar MeOH solvent.

Abstract
A novel family of chiral ortho-substituted BINAPO ligands (o-BINAPO) were synthesized from BINOL, and their Ru complexes were highly efficient catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of beta-aryl-substituted beta-(acylamino)acrylates and beta-aryl-substituted beta-keto esters. The Ru-bisphosphinite catalysts can tolerate an E/Z mixture of beta-aryl-substituted beta-(acylamino)acrylates. These highly enantioselective hydrogenations provide a useful way to prepare beta-aryl-substituted beta-amino acids and beta-hydroxyl acids.

Abstract
The silylated telluronium allylide 4, generated in situ from the corresponding telluronium salt in the presence of LiTMP, reacted with (-)-8-phenylmenthyl alpha,beta-unsaturated esters to afford trans-2-silylvinyl-trans-3-substituted cyclopropyl esters with high diastereoselectivity in high yields. The absolute configuration was determined by chemical transformation. A mechanistic rationale is proposed.

Abstract
A pair of diastereomeric (4S,5S)- and (4S,5R)-4-methoxycarbonyl-5-phenylselenomethyl-2-phenyl oxazolines, derived from L-vinylglycine, serve as precursors to protected, quaternary, L- and D-α-(2-tributylstannyl)vinyl amino acids, respectively, in three steps {(i) alkylative side chain installation, (ii) eliminative ring-opening and (iii) vinyl selenide to vinyl stannane interconversion}. The title compounds may be protodestannylated to the corresponding free, quaternary L- and D-vinyl amino acids. Alternatively, the 2-stannylvinyl α-branch (or the derivative 2-iodovinyl branch) may be exploited to access novel quaternary, L- and D-β,γ-unsaturated amino acids via a range of transition metal-mediated cross coupling reactions.

Abstract
SIBFA (sum of interactions between fragments ab initio computed) molecular mechanics systematics has been modified to take into account the effect of pressure on intra- and intermolecular energies. The van der Waals radii are related to the pressure, using Bridgman results on the variation of crystal volume, on one hand, and the relation between the volume of an atom and its van der Waals radius on the other. This procedure produces a decrease of the volume of the systems considered. The modified systematics is used for the study of the conformation at 1 atm and 15 kbar of two stereogenic crotonates and of the complexes formed by these two molecules with the diphenylmethaneamine and the three solvent molecules present in the experiment. The results obtained show that in the case of NMECC 1a the diastereoselectivity induced by high pressure and by the presence of methanol proceeds from an important stabilization of the pro-R reactive complex in which the crotonate has a stacked-transoid conformation. This stabilization is mainly due to intermolecular interactions. In the case of the second crotonate considered, NMCC 1b, our results indicate that pressure induces a stabilization of the pro-R and pro-S complexes having the axial conformation for which the reaction exhibits little diastereoselectivity in qualitative agreement with experimental data. This study tends to show that it is possible to account theoretically for the influence of pressure on molecular conformation and/or complex structure, using a molecular mechanics method that is able to take into account the variation of volumes of the different entities present in the system studied.
