Abstract
Treatment of phthalan derivatives with p-chloranil in dodecane in the presence of molecular sieves at 160-200 °C allowed the generation of unstabilized isobenzofurans, which underwent intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction to give endo cycloadducts exclusively. The cycloaddition turned out to be reversible, providing an equilibrium mixture of endo adducts when heating a substrate with a stereocenter on the tether. We also demonstrated the regioselective allylation of an oxygen-bridged cycloadduct upon exposure to EtAlCl2 in the presence of allyltrimethylsilane, and the conversion to Rice's intermediate completed a formal synthesis of (±)-morphine.

Abstract
An efficient divergent approach to functionalized naphthalene derivatives, the naphthalenamides, via base-mediated and silver-catalyzed cyclization has been developed using enone-oxazolones as the precursors. This protocol utilized base in methanol with heating to construct the corresponding hydroxynaphthalenamides 2 by a C-C bond formation, oxazolone ring-opening, and aromatization in good yields. On the other hand, phosphorylated dihydronaphthylamides 3 were generated by using H-phosphonate as the phosphonating reagent in a silver-catalyzed cyclization involving the phospha-1,4-addition/intramolecular ring closure with concomitant C-P/C-C bond formation in good yields.

Abstract
A broadly applicable diastereo- and enantioselective inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of 2-pyrones and acyclic enol ethers is reported herein. Using a copper(II)-BOX catalytic system, bridged bicyclic lactones are obtained in very high yields (up to 99 % yield) and enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee) from diversely substituted 2-pyrones and acyclic enol ethers. Mechanistic experiments as well as DFT calculations indicate the occurrence of a stepwise mechanism. The synthetic potential of the bridged bicyclic lactones is showcased by the enantioselective synthesis of polyfunctional cyclohexenes and cyclohexadienes, as well as a carbasugar unit.

Abstract
cis-Hydroindole scaffolds widely exist in a large number of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organocatalysts. Therefore, the development of efficient and enantioselective methods for the construction of cis-hydroindoles is of great interest and importance. Herein, a novel approach for the enantioselective synthesis of cis-hydroindole scaffolds has been realized through a chiral N,N'-dioxide/Mg(OTf)2 complex catalyzed asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction of 2-pyrones and cyclic enamines. A series of substituted cis-hydroindole derivatives bearing multiple contiguous stereocenters and functional groups were obtained in good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield, and 95% ee) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the enantioselective formal total synthesis of (+)-minovincine was concisely furnished with high efficiency and stereoselectivity to demonstrate the synthetic potential of this method.

Abstract
An inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction could complement the conventional normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction in the synthesis of six-membered carbocycles. However, catalytic asymmetric all-carbon-based IEDDA reactions are underdeveloped. Herein, we disclosed a copper-catalyzed asymmetric IEDDA reaction using electron-deficient 3-carboalkoxyl-2-pyrones and electronically unbiased indenes as reactants. This method enables the rapid and enantioselective construction of a wide range of hexahydrofluorenyl bridged-lactone scaffolds. Using this method, asymmetric total syntheses of cephanolides A and B were accomplished.

Abstract
A highly regioselective divergent approach for the phosphine-containing indane/indene derivatives from the ene-yne-oxazolone precursors was reported. An insight into the reaction mechanism involving the phospha-1,4-addition followed by 5-exo-dig ring closure with a concomitant C-P/C-C bond formation was also proposed. This promising protocol utilized H-phosphonate as the phosphonating reagent in a silver-catalyzed or base-mediated cascade cyclization to construct the corresponding phosphorylated spiroindenoxazolones and amidoindenes, respectively, in good yields (up to 88% yield).

Abstract
A novel strategy for the synthesis of cis-decalins by an ytterbium-catalyzed asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of 2-pyrones and silyl cyclohexadienol ethers is reported here. A broad range of synthetically important cis-decalin derivatives with multiple contiguous stereogenic centers and functionalities are obtained in good yields and stereoselectivities. A full set of diastereomeric substituted cis-decalin motifs are readily accessible by tuning the absolute configurations of substituted silyl cyclohexadienol ethers (R or S) as well as the ligands (R or S). The synthetic potential is showcased by the enantioselective total synthesis of 4-amorphen-11-ol, and further demonstrated by the first total synthesis of cis-crotonin.

Abstract
Despite the proven value in utilizing pyrone dienes to create molecular complexity via Diels-Alder reactions with varied dienophiles, few examples of effective catalytic, asymmetric variants of this process have been developed. Herein, we show that the use of Jørgensen-Hayashi-type catalysts can convert an array of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes into chiral dienamines that can formally add in a Diels-Alder fashion to a number of electron-deficient pyrones of the coumalate-type to generate optically active [2.2.2]-bicyclic lactones. In most cases, the reactions proceed with good to excellent diastereo- and enantiocontrol (up to 99% ee). Models to explain that stereoselectivity, as well as several additional transformations of the resultant products, are also presented.

Abstract
The indium(III)-catalyzed enantioselective and regioselective addition of pyrroles to isatins is described. The effects of metal and solvent on the reactivity and selectivity are compared and discussed, demonstrating that the indium(III)-indapybox complex provides the most effective catalyst. A case of divergent reactivity between pyrroles and indoles is presented.

Abstract
Lewis acid catalyzed inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of tropone derivatives was developed. Up to 97% ee was obtained for the chiral dinucleus BINOL-aluminum complex catalyzed reaction between tropones and ketene diethyl acetal to give bicyclo[3.2.2] ring structures, which opens up a unique way of making chiral seven-membered rings.

Abstract
One hundred years after the birth of Kurt Alder and seventy-five years after the discovery of his famous reaction, one of the most important and fascinating transformations in chemistry, research on that process continues to surprise, excite, delight, and inform the chemical community. This article is based on presentations given first at the University of Cologne, Germany (Kurt Alder lecture, 1992), then at the Roger Adams Award Symposium (1993), and later at the Bürgenstock Conference of 2001, and describes research by our group on the development and understanding of enantioselective versions of the Diels-Alder reactions. The elements of this review include (1) development of new chiral Lewis acid catalysts for highly enantioselective (>25:1) [4+2] cycloadditions; (2) the fine mechanistic details and pre-transition-state assemblies of these reactions; (3) the fundamental understanding of catalytic activity and enantioselectivity for highly enantioselective Diels-Alder processes; and (4) applications to the synthesis of complex molecules. The range and power of the Diels-Alder reaction have steadily increased over seven decades. The end of this remarkable development is not in sight, a high compliment to this field of Science and to its great inventor.

Abstract
Reactions of (S)-2-[2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)phenyl]acetaldehyde 1 with Danishefsky's and related dienes took place in the presence of Yb(OTf)3 in a completely stereoselective manner, mediated by a remote sulfinyl group (1,5-asymmetric induction), to afford the corresponding 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-ones. These reactions followed a stepwise mechanism, as was corroborated by isolation of the corresponding intermediates, with a high level of trans-selectivity for 4-methyl-substituted dienes. Treatment of the adducts with Raney Ni provided concomitant cleavage of the C-S bond and reduction of the conjugated carbonyl grouping.
