Abstract
Calix[n]arenes represent a very attractive family of macrocyclic compounds with many potential supramolecular applications. Due to their well-established chemistry and many different synthetic strategies, enabling practically any derivatization of the basic skeleton, calixarenes are among the very popular building blocks used for the design and construction of various receptors, sensors and other sophisticated supramolecular systems. Regio- and/or stereo-selective derivatization of calixarenes currently represents a very extensive set of reactions, the overview of which would fill many thick books. Therefore, this review deals with only a small part of the above-mentioned reactions, specifically describes possible ways of bridging the upper rim of calixarenes, often leading to interesting rigidified structures, and also briefly mentions the potential use of these compounds.

Abstract
We report iridium-catalyzed C-H borylations for the regioselective synthesis of distally disubstituted calix[4]arene macrocycles. The atom- and step-economical method led to a broad family of calix[4]arenes in good yields and functional group tolerance. The synthetic utility of the C-H borylation protocol was finally illustrated with several late-stage modifications for the synthesis of elaborate calix[4]arenes frameworks, otherwise challenging to achieve with commonly employed procedures.

Abstract
The reaction of calix[4]arene derivatives 1a and 1b bearing four salicylaldehyde moieties with 1,3-propanediamine gave macrocyclic trimers 5a and 5b, respectively, which have intramolecular bridges formed via the flattened cone conformation. In contrast, a capsular-shaped dimeric cage [7a·2Na]2+ was selectively formed when the conformation of the calix[4]arene moiety of 1a was fixed in the spread cone conformation by complexation with Na+ at the lower-rim amide groups.

The synthesis of calix[4]- and -[6]arene derivatives P6(H)22+·(Cl–)2, V4(H)24+·(Cl–)2·(I–)2, and V6(H)24+·(Cl–)2·(I–)2 bearing N-linked pyridinium (P) and viologen (V) units at the upper rim is described here. A rare example
of an anionic conformational template is reported for p-pyridiniumcalix[6]arene P6(H)22+, which adopts a 1,3,5-alternate conformation in the presence of
chloride anions. Derivatives P6(H)22+·(Cl–)2, V6(H)24+·(Cl–)2·(I–)2, and V4(H)24+·(Cl–)2·(I–)2 show a negative solvatochromism, while their UV–vis
acid–base titration evidenced that upon addition of a base,
new bands appear at 487, 583, and 686 nm, respectively, due to the
formation of betainic monodeprotonated species P6(H)1+, V6(H)13+,
and V4(H)13+. These new bands were
attributable to the intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) transition
from the phenoxide to the pyridinium or viologen moiety and were responsive
to the presence of cations. In fact, the band at 487 nm of P6(H)1+ was quenched in the presence of a hard
Li+ cation, and the color of its acetonitrile solution
was changed from pink to colorless upon addition of LiI. Consequently,
this derivative can be considered as a useful host for the recognition
and sensing of lithium cations.

Abstract
A novel turn-on fluorescent sensor based on a calix[4]arene with two coumarin units as fluorophores and iminogroups as ionophores on the upper rim has been synthesised. Its recognition properties towards heavy and transition metal ions have been studied by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrometry. The compound showed an enhanced fluorescent intensity in the presence of Fe3+ or Cr3+ ion, a high selectivity to Fe3+ or Cr3+ ions and a complexation ratio towards Fe3+ or Cr3+ of 1:1. The association constant for Fe3+ was 5.37×105 M−1 and for Cr3+ was 9.18×105 M−1.

Abstract
In the present study four new calix[4]arene amide ionophores (4-7) have been prepared by aminolysis of calix[4]arene diester (3) and investigated their extraction ability toward phosphate and dichromate anions at different pH. The (1)H NMR data showed that the synthesized compounds exist in the cone conformation. Liquid-liquid extraction experiments have been performed to evaluate the dichromate and phosphate anions extraction efficiency of both calix[4]arene bearing amide-pyridinium units (4-7) and the calix[4]arene derivative bearing aminomethyl pyridinium units (8, 9). It was observed that, compounds 4-7 exhibited lower affinity toward phosphate ions than the calix[4]arene derivative bearing amine pyridinium units (8, 9). The extraction of phosphate and dichromate anions by these compounds indicates that the partially protonated pyridyl or amino groups play the major role for the formation of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
Synthesis and characterization of three novel Schiff bases based on calix[4]arene are described. The synthesis of these compounds had been achieved by the condensation of salicylaldehyde derivatives with the amine group of upper rim of de-butylcalix[4]arene in ethanol. The structures of new compounds were confirmed on the basis of IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, MS and elementary analysis. Photochromic properties of compounds were studied in CH(3)CN by UV/vis and fluorescence spectra. These Schiff base-calix[4]arene can be used in certain 'supermolecular electronic devices' through combining the photochromic behaviors with others such as non-linear optical or charge transfer properties.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The first C(3)(v)- and D(3)(h)-symmetrical triply bridged calix[6]azatubes were prepared in good yields from the known 1,3,5-tris-methylated calix[6]arene through an efficient [1 + 1] macrocyclization reaction. A remarkably regioselective hexa ipso-nitration reaction led to a calix[6]azatube substituted at the wide rim in alternate position by tBu and nitro groups. A (1)H NMR study showed that, whereas the parent bis-calix[6]arenes self-include their methoxy groups, thereby closing their inner tube, the nitro-substituted calix[6]azatube undergoes a conformational change with the expulsion of the methoxy groups, hence presenting a three-dimensional structure open for host-guest applications.

Abstract
The absorption spectrum and fluorescence spectrum of calix[n]arenes are studied systematically. The self-association of calix[n]arenes is proposed and the self-association constant is also obtained. The recognition properties of calix[n]arenes are studied and the inclusion constant is calculated.

Abstract
Herein we describe our results on the characterization of a wide variety of different hydrogen-bonded assemblies by means of a novel matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technique with Ag+ labeling. The labeling technique with Ag+ ions is extremely mild and provides a nondestructive way to generate charged assemblies that can be detected by mass spectrometry. Up to now more than 25 different single (1(3).2(3)), double (3(3).2(6)), and tetrarosettes (4(3).2(12)) have been successfully characterized by the use of this method. The success of the method entirely depends on the presence of a suitable binding site for the Ag+ ion. A variety of functionalities has been identified that provide strong binding sites for Ag+, either acting in a cooperative way (pi-arene and pi-alkene donor functionalities) or individually (cyano and crown ether functionalities). The method works well for assemblies with molecular weights between 2,000 and 8,000 Da, and most likely far beyond this limit.
