Abstract
Amino sugars are important constituents of a number of biomacromolecules and products of microbial secondary metabolism, including antibiotics. For most of them, the amino group is located at the positions C1, C2 or C3 of the hexose or pentose ring. In biological systems, amino sugars are formed due to the catalytic activity of specific aminotransferases or amidotransferases by introducing an amino functionality derived from L-glutamate or L-glutamine to the keto forms of sugar phosphates or sugar nucleotides. The synthetic introduction of amino functionalities in a regio- and stereoselective manner onto sugar scaffolds represents a substantial challenge. Most of the modern methods of for the preparation of 1-, 2- and 3-amino sugars are those starting from "an active ester" of carbohydrate derivatives, glycals, alcohols, carbonyl compounds and amino acids. A substantial progress in the development of region- and stereoselective methods of amino sugar synthesis has been made in the recent years, due to the application of metal-based catalysts and tethered approaches. A comprehensive review on the current state of knowledge on biosynthesis and chemical synthesis of amino sugars is presented.

Abstract
Twelve new glucosidic and galactosidic derivatives of N-alkylaminosugars with different alkylamines from 6 to 18 carbons were synthesized and characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR. Their antifungal activity against the food fungal pathogen Aspergillus niger was evaluated using the radial growth assay. The influence of the variation of the alkyl chain length of N-alkylaminosugars on the mycelium growth was then discussed. Inhibition by the different alkylamines is shown as a biostatic effect rather than a biocidal effect. It was observed that alkylamines keep their antifungal properties after a thermal treatment compatible with food packaging and processing.

Abstract
Doxorubicin, one of the most widely used anticancer drugs, is composed of a tetracyclic polyketide aglycone and l-daunosamine as a deoxysugar moiety, which acts as an important determinant of its biological activity. This is exemplified by the fewer side effects of semisynthetic epirubicin (4'-epi-doxorubicin). An efficient combinatorial biosynthetic system that can convert the exogenous aglycone ε-rhodomycinone into diverse glycosylated derivatives of doxorubicin or its biosynthetic intermediates, rhodomycin D and daunorubicin, was developed through the use of Streptomyces venezuelae mutants carrying plasmids that direct the biosynthesis of different nucleotide deoxysugars and their transfer onto aglycone, as well as the postglycosylation modifications. This system improved epirubicin production from ε-rhodomycinone by selecting a substrate flexible glycosyltransferase, AknS, which was able to transfer the unnatural sugar donors and a TDP-4-ketohexose reductase, AvrE, which efficiently supported the biosynthesis of TDP-4-epi-l-daunosamine. Furthermore, a range of doxorubicin analogs containing diverse deoxysugar moieties, seven of which are novel rhodomycin D derivatives, were generated. This provides new insights into the functions of deoxysugar biosynthetic enzymes and demonstrates the potential of the S. venezuelae-based combinatorial biosynthetic system as a simple biological tool for modifying structurally complex sugar moieties attached to anthracyclines as an alternative to chemical syntheses for improving anticancer agents.

Abstract
Several amino sugars and imino sugar derivatives were synthesized from keto-sugars of D-xylose through a series of reactions such as the Henry reaction, hydrogenation reactions, and nucleophilic addition reactions or substitution reactions. Thiazine derivative 15 was obtained by the reaction of the keto-sugar with NH(2)CSNH(2). Higher carbon sugar 16 was accidentally prepared at room temperature from the keto-sugar in the presence of NH(2)CONH(2). The structures of the compounds were confirmed by spectral analysis. The absolute configurations of all asymmetric carbon atoms of 6 and 8 were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Abstract
1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of methylideneaniline N-oxide to sugar enones is described. The addition occurred exclusively from the side opposite to the aglycone affording the corresponding alkyl alpha-D-lyxo-hexopyranosid-(2,3:5',4')-phenylisoxazolidin-4-uloses. Hydrogenation of these compounds readily yielded the corresponding alkyl 3-deoxy-3-N-phenylaminomethyl-alpha-D-talopyranoside, that were readily transformed to the acetates. The structure and conformation of the bicyclic compounds were determined by 1H NMR studies and semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations employing the AM1 method.

Abstract
A diastereoselective method for addition of a vinyl group to alpha-hydroxy hydrazones under neutral tin-free radical cyclization conditions, leading to substituted vinylglycinols, is presented. Tandem thiyl radical addition/cyclization upon a silicon-tethered vinyl group followed by treatment with potassium fluoride accomplishes a one-pot neutral vinyl addition process to afford acyclic allylic anti-hydrazino alcohols in good yield.
