Abstract
Herein we describe that oxidation reactions of the dimeric cyclophosphazanes, [{P(μ-NR)}2(μ-NR)]2, R = tBu (1), to produce a series of diagonally dioxidized products P4(μ-N tBu)6E2 [E = O (2), S (3), and Se (4)] and tetraoxidized frameworks. The latter display an unexpected C-N bond activation and cleavage to produce a series of novel phosphazane macrocyclic arrangements containing newly formed N-H bonds. Macromolecules P4(μ-N tBu)4(μ-NH)2O4 (5) and P4(μ-N tBu)3(μ-NH)3E4, E = S (6) and Se (7), dicleaved and tricleaved products, respectively, are rare examples of dimeric macrocycles containing NH bridging groups. Our theoretical and experimental studies illustrate that the extent to which these C-N bonds are cleaved can be controlled by modification of steric parameters in their synthesis, by adjusting either the steric bulk of the substituents in the parent framework or the size of the chalcogen element introduced during the oxidation process. Our findings represent new synthetic pathways for the synthesis of otherwise-elusive macrocycle arrangements within the phosphazane family.

Abstract
Alkoxy- and thiolato-bridged Re(I) molecular rectangles [{(CO)3Re(mu-ER)2Re(CO)3}2(mu-bpy)2] (ER = SC4H9, 1a; SC8H17, 1b; OC4H9, 2a; OC12H25, 2b; bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) exhibit strong interactions with several planar aromatic molecules. The nature of their binding was studied by spectral techniques and verified by X-ray diffraction analysis. Standard absorption and fluorescence titrations showed that a relatively strong 1:1 interaction occurs between aromatic guests such as pyrene and these rectangles. The results of a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis show that the recognition of 1 with a pyrene molecule is mainly due to CH...pi interactions and the face of the guest pyrene is located over the edges of the bpy linkers of 1. This is a fairly novel example of an interaction that is rarely designed into a host-guest pair. Furthermore, the interaction of 1 with Ag+ results in the self-organization of supramolecular arrays, as revealed by solid-state data.

Abstract
Neutral trinuclear metal complexes L2Cd3 x 2H2O, L2Mn3 x MeOH, and L2Zn3 x MeOH were isolated in the reaction between the phosphorus-centered achiral tris(hydrazone) P(S)[N(Me)N=CHC6H(4)-o-OH]3 (LH3) and the corresponding divalent metal ions. The trinuclear complexes contain two equivalent terminal metal ions (M(t)) and a central metal ion (M(c)). The ligand encapsulates M(t) in a facial N3O3 coordination environment. From the coordination sphere of the two terminal metal ions a pair of phenolic oxygen atoms further coordinate to the central metal ion. The coordination requirements of M(c) are completed by the solvents of coordination. The achiral trianionic tripodal ligand (L)3- induces chirality in the metal complexes. This results in a delta (clockwise) or lambda (anticlockwise) configuration for the terminal metal ions. The enantiomeric complexes 2-4 (delta-delta or lambda-lambda) crystallize as racemic compounds. The supramolecular structures of 2-4 reveal chiral recognition in the solid-state; every molecule with the delta-delta configuration interacts stereospecifically, through C-H...S=P bonds, with two lambda-lambda molecules to generate a one-dimensional polymeric chain. Photophysical studies of the diamagnetic trinuclear complexes reveal that the tricadmium complex is luminescent in the solid state as well as in solution. In contrast LH3 and L2Zn3 x MeOH are nonluminescent.

Abstract
A phosphorus supported multisite coordinating ligand P(S)[N(Me)N=CH-C(6)H(4)-o-OH](3) (2) was prepared by the condensation of the phosphorus tris hydrazide P(S)[N(Me)NH(2)](3) (1) with o-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The reaction of 2 with M(OAc)(2).xH(2)O (M = Mn, Co, Ni, x = 4; M = Zn, x = 2) afforded neutral trinuclear complexes [P(S)[N(Me)N=CH-C(6)H(4)-o-O](3)](2)M(3) [M = Mn (3), Co (4), Ni (5), and Zn (6)]. The X-ray crystal structures of compounds 2-6 have been determined. The structures of 3-6 reveal that the trinculear metal assemblies are nearly linear. The two terminal metal ions in a given assembly have an N(3)O(3) ligand environment in a distorted octahedral geometry while the central metal ion has an O(6) ligand environment also in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. In all the complexes, ligand 2 coordinates to the metal ions through three imino nitrogens and three phenolate oxygens; the latter act as bridging ligands to connect the terminal and central metal ions. The compounds 2-6 also show intermolecular C-H...S=P contacts in the solid-state which lead to the formation of polymeric supramolecular architectures. The observed magnetic data for the (s = 5/2)3 L(2)(Mn(II))(3) derivative, 3, show an antiferromagnetic nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange (J = -4.0 K and J' = -0.15 K; using the spin Hamiltonian H(HDvV) = -2J(S(1)S(2) + S(2)S(3)) - 2J'S(1)S(3)). In contrast, the (s = 1)(3) L(2)(Ni(II))(3) derivative, 5, displays ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions (J = 4.43 K and J' = -0.28 K; H = H(HDvV)+ S(1)DS(1) + S(2)DS(2)+ S(3)DS(3)). The magnetic behavior of the L(2)(Co(II))(3) derivative, 4, reveals only antiferromagnetic exchange analogous to 3 (J = -4.5, J' = -1.4; same Hamiltonian as for 3).

Abstract
Fluorinated ansa substituted cyclophosphazenes endo-FcCH(2)P(S)(CH(2)O)(2)[P(F)N](2)(F(2)PN) [Fc = ferrocenyl] (1) and exo-FcCH(2)P(S)(CH(2)O)(2)[P(F)N](2)(F(2)PN) (2) readily transform to the spirocyclic compound [FcCH(2)P(S)(CH(2)O)(2)PN](F(2)PN)(2) (3) not only in the presence of CsF but also with non-fluorinated bases such as Cs(2)CO(3), K(2)CO(3), KOBu(t), Et(3)N, DABCO, DBN, and DBU. The analogous tetrachloro ansa compound exo-FcCH(2)P(S)(CH(2)O)(2)[P(Cl)N](2)(Cl(2)PN) (5), however, did not transform to the chlorinated spiro compound (6) in the presence of these bases. With excess of CsF, P-Cl bonds of 5 were found to undergo fluorination leading to the formation of 2, which transformed to spirocyclic compound 3. Time dependent (31)P NMR spectroscopy was used to monitor this transformation. Crystal structure studies on the ansa substituted compounds 4 and 5 have shown weak bonding interactions involving C-H...Cl, C-H...O, and C-H...S interactions.

Abstract
The synthesis of cyclic tetraselenadiynes could be achieved by a stepwise approach. Key steps were the reaction of the lithium salt of trimethylsilylacetylene (1) with alpha,omega-diselenocyanatoalkanes 2(m) (m = 2-5). By treating the bis-lithium salt of the resulting alpha,omega-diselenaalkadiynes 4(m) (m = 2-5) again with 2(n) (n = 2-5) the cyclic tetraselenadiynes 5(m.n) resulted, with methylene chains of length m and n between the SeC triple bond CSe units. The structures of seven ring systems could be investigated in the solid state. These investigations reveal that the molecular structures are determined by the rigid SeC triple bond CSe units, which try to adopt torsion angles of the CH(2)-Se sigma-bonds between 60 degrees and 90 degrees. In the solid state, the systems 5(3.3) and 5(5.5) show columnar structures that can be traced back to close contacts between Se atoms of neighboring rings.

Abstract
Close contacts between chalcogen atoms in cyclic dienes and diynes are used to create columnar structures in the solid state. Rigid and fairly planar cycles with chalcogen centers are the preconditions for forming those columnar structures.

Abstract
13C CP/MAS, dipolar dephasing MAS and theoretical GIAO calculations were employed to assign 13C resonances to the molecular structure of 1,6:3,4-dianhydro-2-O-tosyl-beta-D-galactopyranose 1. From spinning sideband intensities, employing the graphical method of Herzfeld and Berger the 13C delta(ii) parameters for aromatic residue were calculated. The experimental data were compared with computed results obtained by means of the B3PW91 hybrid method and 6-311G (df, p) basis set. The X-ray geometry of 1 with the correlated position of hydrogen atoms was taken as input data for theoretical calculations. As concluded from Cambridge Crystallographic Database (CSD) search, there are two reports describing the X-ray studies of 1 that show the slightly different geometry of the compound under investigation. This work shows that such discrepancies in geometry can generate differences between computed 13C delta(ii) parameters up to 6 ppm. 13C T1 and 1H T1rho relaxation times reveal that 1 is very rigid in crystal lattice. This structure is characterized by extremely long 1H T1rho, found to be in range ca. 200 ms.
