Abstract
A series of (cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(III) half-sandwich complexes (1-4) supported by bidentate bis(phosphino)amine ligands was synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry. The CoIII-hydride complex 4-H bearing the bis(cyclohexylphosphine) ligand derivative was successfully isolated via protonation of the neutral reduced CoI complex 5 with a weak acid. Experimental and computational methods were used to determine the thermodynamic hydride accepting ability of these CoIII centers and to evaluate their reactivity toward the oxidation of formate. We find that the hydride accepting ability of 1-4 ranges from 71 to 74 kcal/mol in acetonitrile, which should favor a highly exergonic reaction with formate through direct hydride transfer. Formate oxidation was demonstrated at elevated temperatures in the presence of stoichiometric quantities of 4, generating carbon dioxide and the CoIII-hydride complex 4-H in 72% yield.

Abstract
The aminobis(phosphonite) PhN(P(OC6H4OMe-o)2)2 (PNP; 1) reacts with 2 equiv of CuI to give a binuclear complex, Cu2(mu2-I)2(NCCH3)2(mu-PNP) (2), whereas similar reactions with CuCl and CuBr furnish tetranuclear "ladder"-type complexes, Cu4(mu2-X)2(mu3-X)2(mu-PNP)2 (3, X = Cl; 4, X = Br), in excellent yield. The complex 2 when heated under vacuum turns into the tetranuclear complex 5 in a reversible fashion. Similarly, the complexes 3 and 4 on dissolution in CH3CN dissociate reversibly into the corresponding binuclear complexes from which the tetrameric complexes can be readily regenerated. Treatment of 2 with excess of pyridine produces the heterosubstituted derivative, Cu2(mu2-I)2(C5H5N)2(mu-PNP) (6). The interaction of 2 with 2,2'-bipyridine in 1:1 and 1:2 ratios produces the mono- and disubstituted derivatives, Cu2(mu2-I)I(C10H8N2)(mu-PNP) (7) and [Cu2(mu2-I)(C10H8N2)2(mu-PNP)]I (8), respectively. The chloro and bromo analogues of 7 are prepared by treating the tetranuclear derivatives 3 and 4 with 2,2'-bipyridine. Reaction of 2 with 4,4'-bipyridine in the presence of AgOTf gives the cationic complex [Cu4(NCCH3)4(C10H8N2)2(mu-PNP)2](OTf)4 (9), whereas the complex [Cu2(NCCH3)2(mu-PNP)2](OTf)2 (10) was obtained from the reaction of 2 with 1 equiv of 1 and AgOTf. The reactions of 3 and 4 with 2 equiv of 4,4'-bipyridine in acetonitrile afford one-dimensional copper(I) coordination polymers [Cu2(mu2-X)2(mu-PNP)(C10H8N2)]n (13, X = Cl; 14, X = Br). The molecular structures of 2-4, 6-8, 12, and 14 are confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The measurement of scalar (J) couplings by solid-state NMR is a field of great interest, since this interaction is a rich source of local structural information, complementary to dipolar and chemical shift interactions. Here, we first demonstrate that J-coupling distributions exist and can be observed in disordered solids, as illustrated with the observation of a pair-specific distribution of (2)J((31)P-N-(31)P) couplings in a bis-phosphino amine, and we investigate the potential effects of such distributions on the measurement of average J-coupling constants. Second, we show that the measurement of two-dimensional (2D) distributions of J-couplings provides a much richer probe of local structural disorder than one-dimensional distributions, and we introduce new methods that provide different (selective or non-selective) ways of measuring 2D J distributions in a wide range of disordered systems. These methods are finally applied to a slightly disordered polymorphic sample of fully (13)C-enriched cellulose, and then to the bis-phosphino amine sample, from which 2D (2)J(PP)-coupling distributions are clearly identified and interpreted.

Abstract
Five membered carbocycles are important building blocks for many biologically active molecules. Moreover, substituted cyclopentenones (e.g. cyclopentenone prostaglandins) exhibit characteristic biological activity. The efficiency and atom economy of the Pauson-Khand reaction render this process potentially one of the most attractive methods for the synthesis of such compounds. Although it was discovered in its intermolecular form, the scope of the intermolecular Pauson-Khand reaction has always been limited by the poor reactivity and selectivity of the alkene component. The past decade, especially the last three years, has seen concerted efforts to broaden the scope of this reaction. In this overview, we provide a comprehensive and critical coverage of the intermolecular Pauson-Khand reaction based on the reactivity characteristics of different classes of alkenes and a rationalization of successes and misfortunes in this area.

Abstract
The use of sulfoxides as chiral auxiliaries in asymmetric intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions is described. After screening a wide variety of substituents on the sulfur atom in alpha,beta-unsaturated sulfoxides, the readily available o-(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl vinyl sulfoxide (1 i) has proved to be highly reactive with substituted terminal alkynes under N-oxide-promoted conditions (CH3CN, 0 degrees C). In addition, these Pauson-Khand reactions occurred with complete regioselectivity and very high diastereoselectivity (de=86->96 %, (S,R(S)) diastereomer). Experimental studies suggest that the high reactivity exhibited by the vinyl sulfoxide 1 i relies on the ability of the amine group to act as a soft ligand on the alkyne dicobalt complex prior to the generation of the cobaltacycle intermediate. On the other hand, both theoretical and experimental studies show that the high stereoselectivity of the process is due to the easy thermodynamic epimerization at the C5 center in the resulting 5-sulfinyl-2-cyclopentenone adducts. When it is taken into account that the known asymmetric intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions are limited to the use of highly reactive bicyclic alkenes, mainly norbornene and norbornadiene, this novel procedure constitutes the first asymmetric version with unstrained acyclic alkenes. As a demonstration of the synthetic interest of this sulfoxide-based methodology in the enantioselective preparation of stereochemically complex cyclopentanoids, we have developed very short and efficient syntheses of the antibiotic (-)-pentenomycin I and the (-)-aminocyclopentitol moiety of a hopane triterpenoid.

Abstract
The reactivity of different Co(2)(CO)(6)-acetylene complexes in the Pauson-Khand reaction is strongly dependent on the nature of the olefin. Theoretical calculations at both the DFT and ONIOM levels are concordant with experimental observations and suggest how the olefin-cobalt interactions in the complex could have a major effect on the relative reactivity of the olefins. This study rationalizes for the first time the experimentally observed reactivity differences of cyclohexene, cyclopentene, and norbornene.

Abstract
[reaction: see text]. The Magnus Pauson-Khand (PK) mechanism has been studied for the first time by electrospray ionization coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. It has been found that loss of CO from the PK complex precedes olefin coordination and insertion.

Abstract
A convenient procedure for the preparation of enantiopure 10-(R-thio)-2-exo-bornanethiols from (1S)-camphor-10-thiol has been developed. The ethynyl derivatives of these thiols gave excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 98:2) in Pauson-Khand reactions with norbornene and norbornadiene through the intermediacy of a chelated dicobalt pentacarbonyl complex. Thermal reaction conditions starting from the preformed chelated complex gave better results than N-oxide-promoted runs with in situ generation of the chelated intermediate. The corresponding adducts have been elaborated through a protocol consisting of conjugate addition, samarium iodide-promoted cleavage of the chiral auxiliary, and retro-Diels-Alder reaction to afford 4-substituted 2-cyclopentenones in high enantiomeric purity.
