Adsorption of Nitrogen and Oxygen in the Zeolites LiA and LiX Investigated by 6Li and 7Li MAS NMR Spectroscopy

Application of Nanosize Zeolite Molecular Sieves for Medical Oxygen Concentration

The development of a portable oxygen concentrator is of prime significance for patients with respiratory problems. This paper presents a portable concentrator prototype design using the pressure/vacuum swing adsorption (PVSA) cycle with a deep evacuation step (-0.82 barg) instead of desorption with purge flow to simplify the oxygen production process. The output of the oxygen concentrator is a ~90 vol % enriched oxygen stream in a continuous adsorption and desorption cycle (cycle time ~90 s). The size of the adsorption column is 3 cm in diameter and 20 cm in length. A Li⁺ exchanged 13X nanosize zeolite is used as the adsorbent to selectively adsorb nitrogen from air. A dynamic model of the pressure and vacuum swing adsorption units was developed to study the pressurization and depressurization process inside the microporous area of nanosized zeolites. The describing equations were solved using COMSOL Multiphysics Chemical Engineering module. The output flow rate and oxygen concentration results from the simulation model were compared with the experimental data. Velocity and concentration profiles were obtained to study the adsorption process and optimize the operational parameters.

Inhibition of palm oil oxidation by zeolite nanocrystals

The efficiency of zeolite X nanocrystals (FAU-type framework structure) containing different extra-framework cations (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), and Ca(2+)) in slowing the thermal oxidation of palm oil is reported. The oxidation study of palm oil is conducted in the presence of zeolite nanocrystals (0.5 wt %) at 150 °C. Several characterization techniques such as visual analysis, colorimetry, rheometry, total acid number (TAN), FT-IR spectroscopy, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and Karl Fischer analyses are applied to follow the oxidative evolution of the oil. It was found that zeolite nanocrystals decelerate the oxidation of palm oil through stabilization of hydroperoxides, which are the primary oxidation product, and concurrently via adsorption of the secondary oxidation products (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and esters). In addition to the experimental results, periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to elucidate further the oxidation process of the palm oil in the presence of zeolite nanocrystals. The DFT calculations show that the metal complexes formed with peroxides are more stable than the complexes with alkenes with the same ions. The peroxides captured in the zeolite X nanocrystals consequently decelerate further oxidation toward formation of acids. Unlike the monovalent alkali metal cations in the zeolite X nanocrystals (K(+), Na(+), and Li(+)), Ca(2+) reduced the acidity of the oil by neutralizing the acidic carboxylate compounds to COO(-)(Ca(2+))1/2 species.

Molecular orbital model of the influence of interaction between O2 and aluminosilicate sites on the triplet-singlet energy gap and reactivity

The behavior of O(2) molecule in models of acid aluminosilicate sites on any kind of material was investigated using reliable QM ab initio calculations. The triplet-singlet energy gap of isolated O(2) was calculated at confident levels of theory with different basis sets as a reference. Models of aluminosilicate active sites interacting with oxygen in their singlet and triplet electronic states were considered for two kinds of O(2) arrangements. Geometry optimizations were performed on both non-corrected and corrected BSSE potential energy surfaces, realizing that good modeling of heavy atom-hydrogen interactions is sensitive to BSSE corrections during these processes. Energies were further evaluated at higher level of theory to test tendencies. Singlet oxygen appears more attractive to active aluminosilicate sites than those calculated with triplet oxygen, indicating a source of oxidative efficiency for designed nanostructures containing such molecular residues. It was clearly seen that aluminosilicate groups, appearing ubiquitously in several materials, could reduce the O(2) triplet-singlets energy gap by at least 10 kJ/mol. Some elegant features of oxygen interactions with such sites were further analyzed by means of the atoms in molecules (AIM) theory.

Probing the Location and Distribution of Paramagnetic Centers in Alkali Metal-Loaded Zeolites through 7Li MAS NMR

The nature and surroundings of lithium cations in lithium-exchanged X and A zeolites following loading with the alkali metals Na, K, Rb, and Cs have been studied through (7)Li solid-state NMR spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that the lithium in these zeolites is stable with respect to reduction by the other alkali metals. Even though the lithium cations are not directly involved in chemical interactions with the excess electrons introduced in the doping process, the corresponding (7)Li NMR spectra are extremely sensitive to paramagnetic species that are located inside the zeolite cavities. This sensitivity makes (7)Li NMR a useful probe to study the formation, distribution, and transformation of such species.

Distinguishing surface versus buried cation sites in aluminosilicate mesoporous materials

Mesoporous MCM-41 aluminosilicates were prepared through direct synthesis and surface grafting resulting in the incorporation of aluminum into the pore walls and onto the wall surface, respectively. 7Li and 23Na NMR studies of ion-exchanged Li and Na-Al-MCM-41 were able to distinguish between cations in the surface region and those buried deeper in the pore walls. Thus it was demonstrated that most of the cations in the grafted Al-MCM-41 locate in the surface region, whereas the cations in the synthesized Al-MCM-41 are distributed throughout the pore walls. The NMR spectra of dehydrated Li- and Na-MCM-41 resemble those of glassy materials, reflecting the amorphous nature of this class of mesoporous materials. 7Li NMR studies of dehydrated Li-Al-MCM-41 prepared from direct synthesis in the presence of oxygen showed that most of the Li+ cations are not accessible to O2, while the Li+ cations in Al-grafted Li-Al-MCM-41 are accessible, which also confirms their locations. This study provides valuable insights for the understanding of the structure and properties of aluminosilicate mesoporous materials.

Investigation on the nature of the adsorption sites of pyrrole in alkali-exchanged zeolite y by nuclear magnetic resonance in combination with infrared spectroscopy

Multinuclear solid-state NMR and infrared spectroscopy have been applied to investigate the host-guest interactions and the nature of the adsorption sites of pyrrole on alkali-exchanged zeolites Y (LiNaY, NaY, KNaY, and CsNaY). The presence of pyrrole provokes changes in the MAS NMR spectra of (23)Na, (7)Li, and (133)Cs to a degree dependent upon the amount adsorbed. The decrease in the quadrupolar coupling constant for (23)Na as well as the shift for (7)Li and (133)Cs signals are attributed to the interaction of the cation with the pyrrole ring system. The adsorption of pyrrole induces the displacement of cations located at SI' and SII sites toward the supercage to bind the guest molecules. In this way, the distribution of the cations at nonframework sites depends on the amount of adsorbate in the zeolite. At low loadings, pyrrole molecules bind preferentially to more electropositive cation in partially exchanged zeolites Y. Quantitative analysis by (1)H NMR shows that the cation-pyrrole complexes formed possess a stoichiometry of 1:1. The origin of the basic site heterogeneity, evidenced by the presence of several components in the -NH infrared stretching band, is investigated assuming that the heterocycle of pyrrole interacts with cations at SII sites in the supercage and the -NH group forms a hydrogen bond with a basic oxygen atom placed in the framework six-member ring. Making use of the information derived from NMR, it is concluded that the main source of basic site heterogeneity comes from the number of aluminum atoms in the six-member rings of the SII site where the alkaline cation is located.
