A (N,V,T) Monte Carlo Study of the Long-range Electrostatic Coupling between a Large Collection of Charged Colloidal Platelets

Interaction of nanometric clay platelets

The free energy of interaction between two nanometric clay platelets immersed in an electrolyte solution has been calculated using Monte Carlo simulations as well as direct integration of the configurational integral. Each platelet has been modeled as a collection of charged spheres carrying a unit charge the face of a platelet contains negative charges, and the edge, positive charges. The calculations predict that a configuration of "overlapping coins" is the global free energy minimum at intermediate salt concentrations (10-100 mM). A second weaker minimum, corresponding to the well-known "house of cards" configuration, also appears in this salt interval. At low salt concentrations the electrostatic repulsion dominates, while at intermediate concentrations electrostatic interactions alone can create a net attraction between the platelets. At sufficiently high salt content (>200 mM), the van der Waals interaction takes over and the net interaction becomes attractive at essentially all separations. From the calculated free energy and its derivative, we can derive a yield stress and elasticity modulus in fair agreement with experiment. The roughness of the platelets affects the quantitative behavior of the free energy of interaction but does not alter the results in a qualitative way. From the variation of the free energy of interaction, we would tentatively describe the phase behavior as follows: At low salt, the interaction is strongly repulsive and the dispersion should appear as a solid ("repulsive gel"). With increasing salt concentration, the repulsion is weakened and a liquid phase appears ("sol"). A further increase of the salt content leads a second solid phase ("attractive gel") governed by attractive interactions between the platelets. Finally, at sufficiently high salinity, the clay precipitates due to van der Waals forces.

Surface properties of fluids of charged platelike colloids

Surface properties of mixtures of charged platelike colloids and salt in contact with a charged planar wall are studied within density functional theory. The particles are modeled by hard cuboids with their edges constrained to be parallel to the Cartesian axes corresponding to the Zwanzig model [J. Chem. Phys. 39, 1714 (1963)] and the charges of the particles are concentrated at their centers. The density functional applied is an extension of a recently introduced functional for charged platelike colloids. It provides a qualitative approach because it does not determine the relation between the actual and the effective charges entering into the model. Technically motivated approximations, such as using the Zwanzig model, are expected not to influence the results qualitatively. Analytically and numerically calculated bulk and surface phase diagrams exhibit first-order wetting for sufficiently small macroion charges and isotropic bulk order as well as first-order drying for sufficiently large macroion charges and nematic bulk order. The asymptotic wetting and drying behaviors are investigated by means of effective interface potentials which turn out to be asymptotically the same as for a suitable neutral system governed by isotropic nonretarded dispersion forces. Wetting and drying points as well as predrying lines and the corresponding critical points have been located numerically. A crossover from monotonic to nonmonotonic electrostatic potential profiles upon varying the surface charge density has been observed. Nonmonotonic electrostatic potential profiles are equivalent to the occurrence of charge inversion. Due to the presence of both the Coulomb interactions and the hard-core repulsions, the surface potential and the surface charge do not vanish simultaneously, i.e., the point of zero charge and the isoelectric point of the surface do not coincide.

Electrostatic surface interactions in mixtures of symmetric and asymmetric electrolytes: a Monte Carlo study

Canonical Monte Carlo simulations of the interaction between a uniformly charged spherical particle and a discretely charged planar surface in solutions of symmetric and asymmetric electrolytes were performed. To assess the nature of the interactions, the force exerted on the colloidal particle perpendicular to the planar surface was calculated. Attractive minima in the interaction force between the similarly charged surfaces reveal the occurrence of two phenomena: long-range attraction of electrostatic origin and short-range attraction due to depletion effects. The degree of electrostatic coupling determines the magnitude and range of like-charge attraction between the two surfaces.

Electrostatic stability of a large collection of charged anisotropic nanoparticles: a monte carlo study exploiting a hierarchical approach

We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the self-organization of large collections of charged disks of various electric charges to probe the influence of electrostatic coupling on the structure and the mechanical stability of aqueous dispersions of charged anisotropic nanoparticles in the presence of salt. A hierarchical approach of the long-range Coulombic potential was used to perform such Monte Carlo simulations of a large number of charged species. By analyzing the influence of the net electric charge of the disks on their self-organization, we detected a negative contribution to the mean force potential resulting from their electrostatic coupling. In addition, it has been shown that the same electrostatic coupling restricts the spatial extend of locally ordered microdomains within dilute dispersions of charged anisotropic colloids.

Influence of Confinement on the Electrostatic Interaction between Charged Colloids: a (N,V,T) Monte Carlo Study within Hyperspherical Geometry

Monte Carlo simulations within closed hyperspherical geometry are used to analyze the ionic distribution around two confined charged colloids to determine the origin of the net attraction recently reported in the literature. A scaling procedure is used to compare our numerical results obtained with small ideal colloids with the conclusion of the measurements performed with large silica colloids. Although no electrostatic attraction is detected under confinement, our simulations exhibit a significant reduction of the electrostatic repulsion between charged colloids confined between two weakly charged walls. After rescaling to reproduce the electrostatic repulsion between large confined colloids, our numerical results are qualitatively consistent with the reported attraction because we reasonably expect a reduction of the electrostatic force between such confined colloids below the order of magnitude of their van der Waals attraction.

Phase equilibria and glass transition in colloidal systems with short-ranged attractive interactions: application to protein crystallization

We have studied a model of a complex fluid consisting of particles interacting through a hard-core and short-range attractive potential of both Yukawa and square-well form. Using a hybrid method, including a self-consistent and quite accurate approximation for the liquid integral equation in the case of the Yukawa fluid, perturbation theory to evaluate the crystal free energies, and mode-coupling theory of the glass transition, we determine both the equilibrium phase diagram of the system and the lines of equilibrium between the supercooled fluid and the glass phases. For these potentials, we study the phase diagrams for different values of the potential range, the ratio of the range of the interaction to the diameter of the repulsive core being the main control parameter. Our arguments are relevant to a variety of systems, from dense colloidal systems with depletion forces, through particle gels, nanoparticle aggregation, and globular protein crystallization.
