Is the Elusive Trioxydehydroethene Neutral (O2C−CO) Detectable in the Gas Phase?

Competition of electron transfer, dissociation, and bond-forming processes in the reaction of the CO(2)(2+) dication with neutral CO(2)

The bimolecular reactivity of the CO(2)(2+) dication with neutral CO(2) is investigated using triple quadrupole and ion-ion coincidence mass spectrometry. Crucial for product analysis is the use of appropriate isotope labelling in the quadrupole experiments in order to distinguish the different reactive pathways. The main reaction corresponds to single-electron transfer from the neutral reagent to the dication, i.e. CO(2)(2+) + CO(2) --> 2CO(2)(+); this process is exothermic by almost 10 eV, if ground state monocations are formed. Interestingly, the results indicate that the CO(2)(+) ion formed when the dication accepts an electron dissociates far more readily than the CO(2)(+) ion formed from the neutral CO(2) molecule. This differentiation of the two CO(2)(+) products is rationalized by showing that the population of the key dissociative states of the CO(2)(+) monocation will be favoured from the CO(2)(2+) dication rather than from neutral CO(2). In addition, two bond-forming reactions are observed as minor channels, one of which leads to CO(+) and O(2)(+) as ionic products and the other affords a long-lived C(2)O(3)(2+) dication.

Isotope effects in isotope-exchange reactions: evidence for a large 12C/13C kinetic isotope effect in the gas phase

The O-exchange reaction between CO2+ and CO is triggered by two different entrance channels in 13C-labeled systems. The unimolecular dissociation of the C13CO3(+) reactive intermediate is investigated at varying energies by mass spectrometric techniques. An almost "one-way" O-exchange at energies close to the dissociation threshold discloses a remarkably large intramolecular 12C/13C kinetic isotope effect ranging from 6.0 to 7.3 +/- 0.5.

Formation of neutral molecules of potential stellar interest by neutralisation of negative ions in a mass spectrometer. The application of experiment and molecular modelling in concert

This paper is a modified version of a lecture which describes the synthesis, structure and reactivity of some neutral molecules of stellar significance. The neutrals are formed in the collision cell of a mass spectrometer following vertical Franck-Condon one electron oxidation of anions of known bond connectivity. Neutrals are characterised by conversion to positive ions and by extensive theoretical studies at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Four systems are considered in detail, viz (i) the formation of linear C(4) and its conversion to the rhombus C(4), (ii) linear C(5) and the atom scrambling of this system when energised, (iii) the stable cumulene oxide CCCCCO, and (iv) the elusive species O(2)C-CO. This paper is not intended to be a review of interstellar chemistry: examples are selected from our own work in this area.
