Electronic Band Formation at Organic−Metal Interfaces: Role of Adsorbate−Surface Interaction

Adsorbate dissociation due to heteromolecular electronic energy transfer from fluorobenzene thin films

Study of the near-UV photodissociation dynamics for monolayer (ML) quantities of CH3I on thin films of a series of fluorobenzenes and benzene (1-25 ML) grown on a Cu(100) substrate finds that in addition to gas-phase-like neutral photodissociation, CH3I dissociation can be enhanced via electronic energy transfer to the CH3I following photoabsorption in several of the thin films studied. Distinct CH3 photofragment kinetic energy distributions are found for CH3I photodissociation on C6H5F, 1,4-C6H4F2 and C6H6 thin films, and distinguished from neutral photodissociation pathways using polarized incident light. The effective photodissociation cross section for CH3I on these thin films is increased as compared to that for the higher F-count fluorobenzene thin films due to the additional photodissociation pathway available. Quenching by the metal substrate of the photoexcitation via this new pathway suggests a significantly longer timescale for excitation than that of neutral CH3I photodissociation. The observations support a mechanism in which neutral photoexcitation in the thin film (i.e. an exciton) is transported to the interface with CH3I, and transfers the electronic excitation to the CH3I which then dissociates. The unimodal CH3 photofragment distribution and observed kinetic energies on the fluorobenzene thin films suggest that the dissociation occurs via the 3Q1 excited state of CH3I.

Ultrafast direct electron transfer at organic semiconductor and metal interfaces

The ability to control direct electron transfer can facilitate the development of new molecular electronics, light-harvesting materials, and photocatalysis. However, control of direct electron transfer has been rarely reported, and the molecular conformation-electron dynamics relationships remain unclear. We describe direct electron transfer at buried interfaces between an organic polymer semiconductor film and a gold substrate by observing the first dynamical electric field-induced vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG). In transient electric field-induced VSFG measurements on this system, we observe dynamical responses (<150 fs) that depend on photon energy and polarization, demonstrating that electrons are directly transferred from the Fermi level of gold to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of organic semiconductor. Transient spectra further reveal that, although the interfaces are prepared without deliberate alignment control, a subensemble of surface molecules can adopt conformations for direct electron transfer. Density functional theory calculations support the experimental results and ascribe the observed electron transfer to a flat-lying polymer configuration in which electronic orbitals are found to be delocalized across the interface. The present observation of direct electron transfer at complex interfaces and the insights gained into the relationship between molecular conformations and electron dynamics will have implications for implementing novel direct electron transfer in energy materials.

Molecular electronic level alignment at weakly coupled organic film/metal interfaces

Electronic level alignment at interfaces of molecular materials with inorganic semiconductors and metals controls many interfacial phenomena. How the intrinsic properties of the interacting systems define the electronic structure of their interface remains one of the most important problems in molecular electronics and nanotechnology that can be solved through a combination of surface science experimental techniques and theoretical modeling. In this article, we address this fundamental problem through experimental and computational studies of molecular electronic level alignment of thin films of C(6)F(6) on noble metal surfaces. The unoccupied electronic structure of C(6)F(6) is characterized with single molecule resolution using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy-based constant-current distance-voltage spectroscopy. The experiments are performed on several noble metal surfaces with different work functions and distinct surface-normal projected band structures. In parallel, the electronic structures of the quantum wells (QWs) formed by the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital state of the C(6)F(6) monolayer and multilayer films and their alignment with respect to the vacuum level of the metallic substrates are calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation for a semiempirical one-dimensional (1D) potential of the combined system using input from density functional theory. Our analysis shows that the level alignment for C(6)F(6) molecules bound through weak van der Waals interactions to noble metal surfaces is primarily defined by the image potential of metal, the electron affinity of the molecule, and the molecule surface distance. We expect the same factors to determine the interfacial electronic structure for a broad range of molecule/metal interfaces.

Photoexcitation of adsorbates on metal surfaces: one-step or three-step

In this essay we discuss the light-matter interactions at molecule-covered metal surfaces that initiate surface photochemistry. The hot-electron mechanism for surface photochemistry, whereby the absorption of light by a metal surface creates an electron-hole pair, and the hot electron scatters through an unoccupied resonance of adsorbate to initiate nuclear dynamics leading to photochemistry, has become widely accepted. Yet, ultrafast spectroscopic measurements of molecule-surface electronic structure and photoexcitation dynamics provide scant support for the hot electron mechanism. Instead, in most cases the adsorbate resonances are excited through photoinduced substrate-to-adsorbate charge transfer. Based on recent studies of the role of coherence in adsorbate photoexcitation, as measured by the optical phase and momentum resolved two-photon photoemission measurements, we examine critically the hot electron mechanism, and propose an alternative description based on direct charge transfer of electrons from the substrate to adsorbate. The advantage of this more quantum mechanically rigorous description is that it informs how material properties of the substrate and adsorbate, as well as their interaction, influence the frequency dependent probability of photoexcitation and ultimately how light can be used to probe and control surface femtochemistry.

Electron Dynamics at Polyacene/Au(111) Interfaces

Two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy is used to examine the excited electronic structure and dynamics at polyacene/Au(111) interfaces. Image resonances are observed in all cases (benzene, naphthalene, anthrathene, tetracene, and pentacene), as evidenced by the free-electron like dispersions in the surface plane and the dependences of these resonances on the adsorption of nonane overlayers. The binding energies and lifetimes of these resonances are similar for the five interfaces. Adsorption of nonane on top of these films pushes the electron density in the image resonance away from the metal surface, resulting in a decrease in the binding energy (-0.3 eV) and an increase in the lifetime (from <20 to approximately 110 fs). The insensitivity of the image resonances to the size of polyacene molecules and the absence of photoinduced electron transfer from the metal substrate to molecular states both suggest that the unoccupied molecular orbitals are not strongly coupled to the delocalized metal states or image potential resonances.

Electron transmission through organized organic thin films

Low-energy electron photoemission spectroscopy (LEPS) allows the study of the electronic properties of organized organic thin films (OOTF) adsorbed on conducting surfaces by monitoring the energy and angular distribution of electrons emitted from the substrate and transmitted through the film. The transmission properties are explained by electronic band structure in the organic film. This band is an example of an electron resonance that is delocalized in the layer. It results from the two-dimensional nature of the layer. Other resonances in the transmission spectra are also discussed, as well as their experimental manifestation. The temperature dependence of the electron transmission efficiency is explained in terms of dependence of the transmission probability on the initial momentum of the electron and on the relative orientation of the electron velocity and the molecules in the film. Hence, despite the fact that the molecules in the OOTF are weakly interacting, when not charged, the electron transmission through the film is governed by cooperative effects. These effects must be taken into account when considering electronic properties of adsorbed layers.

Electron transfer at molecule-metal interfzces: a two-photon photoemission study

Electron transfer between a molecular resonance and a metal surface is a ubiquitous process in many chemical disciplines, ranging from molecular electronics to surface photochemistry. This problem has been probed recently by two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. The first photon excites an electron from an occupied metal state to an unoccupied molecular resonance. Subsequent evolution of the excited electronic wavefunction is probed in energy, momentum, and time domains by the absorption of a second photon, which ionizes the electron for detection. These experiments reveal the important roles of molecule-metal wavefunction mixing, intermolecular band formation, polarization, and localization in interfacial electron transfer.
