Electrode Potential-Dependent Anion Chemisorption and Surface Bond Polarization As Assessed by Density Functional Theory

Why halides enhance heterogeneous metal ion charge transfer reactions

The reaction kinetics of many metal redox couples on electrode surfaces are enhanced in the presence of halides (i.e., Cl-, Br-, I-). Using first-principles metadynamics simulations, we show a correlation between calculated desorption barriers of V3+-anion complexes bound to graphite via an inner-sphere anion bridge and experimental V2+/V3+ kinetic measurements on edge plane pyrolytic graphite in H2SO4, HCl, and HI. We extend this analysis to V2+/V3+, Cr2+/Cr3+, and Cd0/Cd2+ reactions on a mercury electrode and demonstrate that reported kinetics in acidic electrolytes for these redox couples also correlate with the predicted desorption barriers of metal-anion complexes. Therefore, the desorption barrier of the metal-anion surface intermediate is a descriptor of kinetics for many metal redox couple/electrode combinations in the presence of halides. Knowledge of the metal-anion surface intermediates can guide the design of electrolytes and electrocatalysts with faster kinetics for redox reactions of relevance to energy and environmental applications.

Bromide ion-functionalized nanoprobes for sensitive and reliable pH measurement by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

4-Mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) is a pH reporter molecule commonly used to functionalize nanoprobes for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based pH measurements. However, nanoprobes functionalized by 4-Mpy alone have low pH sensitivity and are subject to interference by halide ions in sample media. To improve nanoprobe pH sensitivity and reliability, we functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with both 4-Mpy and bromide ion (Br^-). Br^- electrostatically stabilizes protonated 4-Mpy, thus enabling sensitive SERS detection of the protonation state of 4-Mpy as a function of pH while also reducing variability caused by external halide ions. Through optimization of the functionalization parameters, including suspension pH, [4-Mpy], and [Br^-], the developed nanoprobes enable monitoring of pH from 2.1 to 10 with high SERS activity and minimal interference from halide ions within the sample matrix. As a proof of concept, we were able to track nanoprobe location and image the pH distribution inside individual cancer cells. This study provides a novel way to engineer reliable 4-Mpy-functionalized SERS nanoprobes for the sensitive analysis of spatially localized pH features in halide ion-containing microenvironments.

Investigation of halide-induced aggregation of Au nanoparticles into spongelike gold

We present a facile method for fabricating spongelike Au structures by halide-induced aggregation and fusion of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Halide ions (F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), and I(-)) showed distinctly different effects on the synthesized AuNPs, which were characterized by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and dynamic light scattering measurements. A noticeable red-shift in the LSPR peak was found after Br(-) and I(-) ion treatment, which indicates the adsorption of halide atoms or ions on the AuNPs. The surface potential of AuNPs varied by treatment with different types of halides; this finding indicates that different halide ions have different effects on the AuNPs. Br(-) and I(-) ions showed strong affinity toward the AuNPs. The different affinities of halide ions toward the AuNPs play an important role in controlling the formation process of spongelike gold. Citrate ions adsorbed on AuNPs were displaced by halide ions to different extents. Such displacement determined the aggregation and fusion behaviors of the AuNPs and eventually the formation of different spongelike structures.

Quantitative studies of adsorbate dynamics at noble metal electrodes by in situ Video-STM

The surface diffusion of adsorbates at electrochemical interfaces is studied by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy with high temporal resolution, using sulfur and methyl thiolate on c(2 × 2) Cl covered Cu(100), Ag(100), and Au(100) electrode surfaces in 0.01 M HCl solution as an example. While on Au(100) quantitative studies were not possible because of the slow dynamics and high surface defect density, on Cu(100) and Ag(100) a pronounced exponential increase of the jump rates of isolated adsorbates toward more negative potentials was found, indicating a linear decrease of the tracer diffusion barriers with potential. The potential dependence is independent of the adsorbate species, but differs for Cu(100) and Ag(100) substrates. These trends can be explained by electrostatic contributions to the diffusion barrier, caused by the interaction of the adsorbates with the field of the electrochemical double layer, if the presence of the chloride coadsorbate layer is taken into account.

Anomalous potential dependence in homoepitaxial Cu(001) electrodeposition: an in situ surface x-ray diffraction study

Homoepitaxial Cu electrodeposition on Cu(001) in chloride-containing electrolyte was studied by time-resolved in situ surface x-ray diffraction at growth rates up to 38 ML/ min. With increasing Cu electrode potential, transitions from step-flow to layer-by-layer and then to multilayer growth are observed. This potential dependence is opposite to that expected theoretically and found experimentally for the Au(001) homoepitaxial electrodeposition [K. Krug et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 246101 (2006)]. The anomalous behavior is rationalized by a decisive influence of the ordered c(2 × 2)-Cl adlayer on the surface energy landscape, specifically on the effective change in dipole moment during adatom diffusion.

A periodic density functional theory analysis of CO chemisorption on Pt(111) in the presence of uniform electric fields

Periodic DFT calculations are used to study the effect of a homogeneous electric field applied perpendicular to a Pt(111) surface on the bond distances, binding energies, and vibrational frequencies of atop- and fcc-adsorbed CO at various coverages. The observed structural and energetic modifications can be understood in terms of modest field-induced charge transfer between charged metal surface and adsorbate and are well-described by classical first and second-order Stark models. Electronic differences between atop and fcc adsorption cause CO in these sites to respond differently to applied fields. After correcting for the GGA site preference error, CO adsorption is predicted to shift from atop to fcc at potentials <-0.19 V A(-1). The results are in qualitative agreement with previously reported cluster-based DFT models but differ quantitatively due to difference in modeled coverage, surface relaxation, and finite size effects. The calculated 44.4 cm(-1) V(-1) A shift in C-O stretch frequency with electric field (Stark tuning rate) compares favorably with UHV experiments but is significantly lower than the value obtained in electrochemical measurements, highlighting the importance of adsorbate environment on the magnitude of the tuning rate. The calculated coverage dependence of the tuning rate is in good agreement with previous UHV experiments.

Theoretical Study of the Adsorption and Dissociation of Oxygen on Pt(111) in the Presence of Homogeneous Electric Fields

The effect of homogeneous electric fields on the adsorption energies of atomic and molecular oxygen and the dissociation activation energy of molecular oxygen on Pt(111) were studied by density functional theory (DFT). Positive electric fields, corresponding to positively charged surfaces, reduce the adsorption energies of the oxygen species on Pt(111), whereas negative fields increase the adsorption energies. The magnitude of the energy change for a given field is primarily determined by the static surface dipole moment induced by adsorption. On 10-atom Pt(111) clusters, the adsorption energy of atomic oxygen decreased by ca. 0.25 eV in the presence of a 0.51 V/A (0.01 au) electric field. This energy change, however, is heavily dependent on the number of atoms in the Pt(111) cluster, as the static dipole moment decreases with cluster size. Similar calculations with periodic slab models revealed a change in energy smaller by roughly an order of magnitude relative to the 10-atom cluster results. Calculations with adsorbed molecular oxygen and its transition state for dissociation showed similar behavior. Additionally, substrate relaxation in periodic slab models lowers the static dipole moment and, therefore, the effect of electric field on binding energy. The results presented in this paper indicate that the electrostatic effect of electric fields at fuel cell cathodes may be sufficiently large to influence the oxygen reduction reaction kinetics by increasing the activation energy for dissociation.
