Theoretical Study of the Catalytic Activity of Bimetallic RhCu Surfaces and Nanoparticles toward H2 Dissociation

Methane dehydrogenation on Rh@Cu(111): a first-principles study of a model catalyst

The issue of tuning the relative height of the first two dehydrogenation barriers of methane (CH(4) --> CH(3) + H and CH(3) --> CH(2) + H) is addressed using density-functional theory. It is shown that the combination of a very active reaction center-such as Rh-with a more inert substrate-such as Cu(111)-may hinder the second dehydrogenation step with respect to the first, thus resulting in the reverse of the natural order of the two barriers' heights.

Effect of Ni and Pd on the Geometry, Electronic Properties, and Active Sites of Copper Clusters

The geometry, electronic properties, and active sites of copper clusters doped with Ni or Pd atoms, Cu(n)()(-)(1)M (n = 2-6; M = Ni, Pd) have been investigated using first-principles methods. Planar structures are energetically favorable in Cu(n)()(-)(1)Ni (n = 2-6). However, for Pd-doped clusters, three-dimensional structures are competitive in energy, and for n = 6, the most stable structure is not planar. Several properties of doped copper clusters present odd-even oscillations as the number of copper atoms grow. The different atomic ground-state configuration of Ni and Pd determines the bonding and electronic properties of doped copper clusters. The interaction between impurities and copper atoms can modify the chemical hardness and active sites of doped copper clusters markedly inducing directionality in the reactivity. This effect is relevant to the behavior of catalysts as well as in the growth of metallic films.

Theoretical Study of CO and NO Chemisorption on RhCu(111) Surfaces

A systematic density functional theory study using periodic models is presented concerning the chemisorption of CO and NO on various sites of RhCu(111) surfaces. The properties of the adsorbed molecules on various mono- and bimetallic sites of these alloy surfaces have been obtained and compared to those corresponding to the pure Rh(111) and Cu(111) surfaces. It is shown that that the interaction of small probe molecules such as CO or NO on RhCu alloys is essentially dominated by the atomic nature of the surface active site with little influence of the rest of the metallic system. Moreover, it is suggested that it is possible to control the adsorption site of these molecules by appropriate choice of the surface composition.

Effects of carbon on the stability and chemical performance of transition metal carbides: A density functional study

Density functional theory was employed to study the stabilities and chemical activities of transition metal carbides. Here we take the well-known Mo carbides and Ti carbides as an example. Different kinds of structures including the bulk surfaces [Mo(2)C(001), MoC(001), and TiC(001)] and metcars [Mo(8)C(12) and Ti(8)C(12)] are taken into consideration. Systematic studies show that by raising the C coordination number of the metal atoms in the carbides, in general the stability of the carbides increases (metcars are an exception since they include both high-coordinated and low-coordinated metal atoms.); at the same time, the chemical activities of the carbides decrease due to a downshift of the metal d-band center (ligand effect). Considering the better catalysts those that combine high stability and moderate chemical activity, our results suggest that the catalytic potential of Mo carbide systems should decrease in the following sequence: Mo(8)C(12)>Mo(2)C(001) or MoC(001)>pure Mo(110). In spite of having the largest C/Mo ratio, the metcar appears as the most attractive system. Our studies also indicate that the "magic" behavior of metcars is not unique for Mo carbides. Similar behavior is also observed for Ti carbides. This implies that nanoparticles like metcar species could exhibit better performances than the corresponding bulk metal carbides as catalysts.
