Decarbonizing Natural Gas: A Review of Catalytic Decomposition and Carbon Formation Mechanisms

In the context of energy conservation and the reduction of CO2 emissions, inconsistencies between the inevitable emission of CO2 in traditional hydrogen production methods and eco-friendly targets have become more apparent over time. The catalytic decomposition of methane (CDM) is a novel technology capable of producing hydrogen without releasing CO2. Since hydrogen produced via CDM is neither blue nor green, the term “turquoise” is selected to describe this technology. Notably, the by-products of methane cracking are simply carbon deposits with different structures, which can offset the cost of hydrogen production cost should they be harvested. However, the encapsulation of catalysts by such carbon deposits reduces the contact area between said catalysts and methane throughout the CDM process, thereby rendering the continuous production of hydrogen impossible. This paper mainly covers the CDM reaction mechanisms of the three common metal-based catalysts (Ni, Co, Fe) from experimental and modelling approaches. The by-products of carbon modality and the key parameters that affect the carbon formation mechanisms are also discussed.

New Dual-Functional and Reusable Bimetallic Y2ZnO4 Nanocatalyst for Organic Transformation under Microwave/Green Conditions

A novel bimetallic and reusable Y₂ZnO₄ nanocatalyst was synthesized by a simple coprecipitation method. The prepared nanocatalyst exhibited dual catalytic activity and was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average crystallite and grain sizes were found to be 17 ± 1 and 10 ± 2 nm, respectively. On the one hand, the catalytic activity of the nanocatalyst was studied for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds, such as ethyl cyanoacetate and malononitrile, under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. On the other hand, the nanoparticles also showed faster photocatalytic activity against methyl orange (MO) compared to other dyes. The nanocatalyst was easily recoverable by a simple filtration method and was recycled without any significant loss of catalytic activity. The advantages of this nanocatalyst were a simple workup procedure, high reaction yields, solvent-free conditions, reusability, and a short reaction time under green reaction conditions.

Polyacrylamide Ferrogels with Ni Nanowires

Nickel magnetic nanowires (NWs) have attracted significant attention due to their unique properties, which are useful for basic studies and technological applications, for example in biomedicine. Their structure and magnetic properties were systematically studied in the recent years. In this work, Ni NWs with high aspect ratios (length/diameter ~250) were fabricated by electrodeposition into commercial anodic aluminum oxide templates. The templates were then etched and the NWs were suspended in water, where their hydrodynamic size was evaluated by dynamic light scattering. The magnetic response of these NWs as a function of an external magnetic field indicates a dominant shape anisotropy with propagation of the vortex domain wall as the main magnetization reversal process. The suspension of Ni NWs was used in the synthesis of two types of polyacrylamide ferrogels (FGs) by free radical polymerization, with weight fractions of Ni NWs in FGs of 0.036% and 0.169%. The FGs were reasonably homogeneous. The magnetic response of these FGs (hysteresis loops) indicated that the NWs are randomly oriented inside the FG, and their magnetic response remains stable after embedding.

Heterogeneous and versatile NiO–SiO₂ NCs were synthesized by a sol–gel technique and used as a catalyst for the one-pot multicomponent synthesis of benzodiazepines.
