Comparative Analysis of Packet and Trigger Waves Originating from a Finite Wavelength Instability

Localized stationary and traveling reaction-diffusion patterns in a two-layer A+B→ oscillator system

When two solutions containing separate reactants A and B of an oscillating reaction are put in contact in a gel, localized spatiotemporal patterns can develop around the contact zone thanks to the interplay of reaction and diffusion processes. Using the Brusselator model, we explore analytically the deployment in space and time of the bifurcation diagram of such an A+B→ oscillator system. We provide a parametric classification of possible instabilities as a function of the ratio of the initial reactant concentrations and of the reaction intermediate species diffusion coefficients. Related one-dimensional reaction-diffusion dynamics are studied numerically. We find that the system can spatially localize waves and Turing patterns as well as induce more complex dynamics such as zigzag spatiotemporal waves when Hopf and Turing modes interact.

Diffusive instabilities in hyperbolic reaction-diffusion equations

We investigate two-variable reaction-diffusion systems of the hyperbolic type. A linear stability analysis is performed, and the conditions for diffusion-driven instabilities are derived. Two basic types of eigenvalues, real and complex, are described. Dispersion curves for both types of eigenvalues are plotted and their behavior is analyzed. The real case is related to the Turing instability, and the complex one corresponds to the wave instability. We emphasize the interesting feature that the wave instability in the hyperbolic equations occurs in two-variable systems, whereas in the parabolic case one needs three reaction-diffusion equations.

Periodic spatiotemporal patterns in a two-dimensional two-variable reaction-diffusion model

Periodic spatiotemporal two-dimensional (2D) asymptotic patterns in an excitable two-variable thermochemical (reaction-diffusion) system are shown. In a one-dimensional system the traveling impulse which reflects from impermeable boundaries is a stable asymptotic solution if the diffusion coefficient of the reactant is greater than the thermal diffusivity of the system. Periodic patterns of two symmetries are presented in the 2D system: the impulse of excitation propagating along the diagonal of a square spatial domain and a structure consisting of curved impulses which propagate in the direction perpendicular to one side of a rectangular domain.

Subcritical wave instability in reaction-diffusion systems

We report an example of subcritical wave instability in a model of a reaction-diffusion system and discuss the potential implications for localized patterns found in experiments on the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in a microemulsion.

Tracking waves and vortex nucleation in excitable systems with anomalous dispersion

We report experimental results obtained from a chemical reaction-diffusion system in which wave propagation is limited to a finite band of wavelengths and in which no solitary pulses exist. Wave patterns increase their size through repeated annihilation events of the frontier pulse that allow the succeeding pulses to advance farther. A related type of wave dynamics involves a stable but slow frontier pulse that annihilates subsequent waves in front-to-back collisions. These so-called merging dynamics give rise to an unexpected form of spiral wave nucleation. All of these phenomena are reproduced by a simple, three-species reaction-diffusion model that reveals the importance of the underlying anomalous dispersion relation.
