Abstract
Metallocenes represent archetypical organometallic compounds playing key roles in various fields of fundamental and applied chemistry. Many of their unique properties arise from low ionization energies (IE) which can be tuned by introducing substituents into the rings. Here we report the first mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectrum of a methylmetallocene, (Cp')(Cp)Co (Cp' = η5-C5H4Me, Cp = η5-C5H5). The presence of a single Me group allows us to study the "pure" effect of methylation without the mutual influence of substituents. The MATI technique provides an extremely high accuracy in determining the adiabatic IE of (Cp')(Cp)Co which equals 5.2097(6) eV. The effect of a Me group on the IE of cobaltocene appears to be 36% stronger than that in bis(η6-benzene)chromium. The MATI spectrum of (Cp')(Cp)Co shows a rich vibronic structure from which vibrational frequencies of the free ion are determined. This information provides a solid basis for testing the quality of quantum chemical calculations. Various levels of the DFT and coupled cluster computations are used to describe the structural and electronic transformations accompanying the detachment of an elctron from (Cp')(Cp)Co. New aspects of the methyl substituent influence on the potential energy surfaces, as well as on the inhomogeneous changes in charge density and electrostatic potential caused by ionization, are discussed.

Abstract
In this study, we investigate the photoexcited electronic states of ferrocene (Fc) molecules adsorbed on an organic insulating surface by two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. This insulating layer, composed of a decanethiolate self-assembled monolayer formed on an Au(111) substrate, enables us to probe the electronically excited states localized at the adsorbed Fc molecules. The adsorbate-specific state is resonantly excited by photons at 4.57 eV, which is 0.5 eV smaller than the energy of the first molecular Rydberg state of free Fc in the gas phase. This result indicates that the electrons are bound to both the excited hole formed in the adsorbate and the positive image charge induced in the substrate. The hybridized electronic characteristics of the adsorbate-specific state are responsible for the strong transition selectivity and short lifetime of the excited state.

Abstract
Two-color resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectra of jet-cooled (eta(6)-C(6)H(6))(2)Cr(1), (eta(6)-C(6)D(6))(2)Cr(2), and (eta(6)-C(6)D(6))(eta(6)-C(6)D(5)H)Cr(3) have been measured with use of the 3d(z)2-->R4p(x,y) Rydberg transition as the first step of the electronic excitation. The 0(0) (0) Rydberg component shifts by 59 and 54 cm(-1) to red when one goes from 1 to 2 and 3, respectively. Surprisingly, the REMPI spectra of 1-3 show very rich vibronic structures revealing both totally symmetric vibrations and degenerate vibrational modes. Presence of intense peaks corresponding to the e(2g) modes in the spectra of 1 and 2 is indicative of Jahn-Teller coupling in the R4p(x,y) Rydberg state. Additional REMPI resonances appear on going from 1 and 2 to 3 as a result of the symmetry reduction. The vibronic components in the spectra of 1-3 were assigned on the basis of the selection rules and comparison with the vibrational frequencies of the 1 and 2 ground-state molecules. The frequencies of over 10 normal vibrations have been determined for the gas-phase 1-3 Rydberg-state molecules from the REMPI experiment. The wavenumber corresponding to the lowest-energy mode (the ring torsion vibration) appears to be 40 cm(-1) in 1 and 35 cm(-1) in the deuterated complexes. The REMPI peaks are homogeneously broadened. The lower lifetime limits for the upper-state components increase on going from the vibrationless level to higher-lying vibronic states and on going from 1 to the deuterated derivatives.
