Effects of symmetry, methyl groups and serendipity on intramolecular vibrational energy dispersal

Intramolecular vibrational dispersal of vibrational energy is more efficient in the symmetrically-substituted p-xylene molecule than in p-fluorotoluene, p-chlorofluorobenzene or p-difluorobenzene.

Cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with optical feedback cw diode lasers for gas phase analysis and spectroscopy

A variant of cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (CERS) is introduced, in which diode laser radiation at 635 nm is coupled into an external linear optical cavity composed of two highly reflective mirrors. Using optical feedback stabilisation, build-up of circulating laser power by 3 orders of magnitude occurs. Strong Raman signals are collected in forward scattering geometry. Gas phase CERS spectra of H(2), air, CH(4) and benzene are recorded to demonstrate the potential for analytical applications and fundamental molecular studies. Noise equivalent limits of detection in the ppm by volume range (1 bar sample) can be achieved with excellent linearity with a 10 mW excitation laser, with sensitivity increasing with laser power and integration time. The apparatus can be operated with battery powered components and can thus be very compact and portable. Possible applications include safety monitoring of hydrogen gas levels, isotope tracer studies (e.g., (14)N/(15)N ratios), observing isotopomers of hydrogen (e.g., radioactive tritium), and simultaneous multi-component gas analysis. CERS has the potential to become a standard method for sensitive gas phase Raman spectroscopy.

Quantum chemical study and infrared spectroscopy of hydrogen-bonded CHCl3–NH3 in the gas phase

Molecular association of chloroform with ammonia is studied by high-level quantum chemical calculations including correlated MP2 and CCSD(T) calculations with basis sets up to6-311++G(d,p) and counterpoise corrected energies, geometries, and frequencies. The calculations predict an eclipsed hydrogen-bonded complex of C(3v) symmetry (DeltaE(0)=-15.07 kJ mol(-1)) with 225.4 pm intermolecular CHcdots, three dots, centeredN distance. Intermolecular interactions are analysed by Kitaura-Morokuma [Int. J. Quantum Chem. 10, 325 (1976)] interaction energy decomposition. Compared to the monomer, the C-H bond is elongated, and the CH-stretching fundamental shifts to lower wave numbers and has a marked approximately 340-fold increase of its intensity. Based on these predictions, the complex is observed by infrared spectroscopy in the gas phase at room temperature. A subtraction procedure isolates its spectrum, and a dilution series confirms the presence of a 1:1 complex. The CHCl(3)cdots, three dots, centeredNH(3) complex has an experimental -17.5 cm(-1) shift of its CH-stretching vibration, and CDCl(3)cdots, three dots, centeredNH(3) a -12.5 cm(-1) shift of the CD-stretching vibration. After a deperturbation of the CH-stretching/bending mode Fermi resonance system, this indicates a "redshifting" or more appropriately, a "C-H elongating" hydrogen bond in agreement with the ab initio calculations. An estimate of the complex concentration gives the equilibrium constant K(p)=0.024 (p(theta)=10(5) Pa) at 295 K for the dimerization, providing one of the few examples where a hydrogen-bonded gas phase complex at room temperature could be quantitatively studied by infrared spectroscopy.

Infrared spectroscopy of hydrogen-bonded CHCl3-SO2 in the gas phase

A molecular association between chloroform and sulfur dioxide in the gas phase at room temperature was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Since the intensity of the CH-stretching fundamental vibration of monomer chloroform is very weak but much stronger upon complexation, a simple subtraction procedure isolated the CH-stretching vibration spectrum of the complex. The presence of a 1:1 complex was confirmed by two dilution series, where the monomer concentrations were varied. The molecular association manifested itself as a shift of the peak absorbance of the CH-stretching vibration of CHCl3-SO2 by +7 cm(-1) and of the CD-stretching vibration of CDCl3-SO2 by +5 cm(-1) to higher wave numbers compared to monomer chloroform, accompanied by a considerable broadening of the band contour. In agreement with previous ab initio calculations, this indicates a "blueshifting" or more appropriately, a "C-H contracting" hydrogen bond between chloroform and sulfur dioxide. An estimate of the complex concentration was made based on ab initio calculations for the integrated band strength and the measured spectrum. With this estimate, the equilibrium constant Kp (295 K)=0.014 (po=10(5) Pa) for the dimerization was calculated, providing one of the very few cases where the formation of a hydrogen-bonded gas phase complex at room temperature could be quantitatively studied by infrared spectroscopy.

High Resolution Rovibrational Spectroscopy of Chiral and Aromatic Compounds

The analysis of selected rovibrationally resolved infrared spectra of some relatively heavy and large polyatomic molecules is reviewed. A short historical summary of the development of high resolution interferometric Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers is given and the possibilities of the currently most highly resolving FTIR spectrometer, which is commercially available in the Bruker IFS 125 series, are discussed. The computational tools necessary to analyse FTIR spectra are described briefly. As examples of rovibrational analysis the spectra of three selected molecules CHCl(2)F, CDBrClF, and pyridine (C(5)H(5)N) are discussed. The spectrum of CHCl(2)F, a fluorochlorohydrocarbon, is of interest for a better understanding of the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere. CDBrClF is a chiral molecule and therefore the analysis of its rovibrational spectra provides the basis for carrying out further experiments towards the detection of molecular parity violation. The analysis of the pyridine FTIR spectra illustrates the potential of the new generation of FTIR spectrometers in the study of spectra and rovibrational dynamics of aromatic systems and molecules of potential biological interest.

Stereomutation Tunneling Switching Dynamics and Parity Violation in Chlorineperoxide Cl−O−O−Cl

In a search for efficient spectroscopic avenues toward experiments on molecular parity violation, we investigate the stereomutation tunneling processes in the axially chiral chlorine isotopomers of Cl2O2 by the quasi-adiabatic channel reaction path Hamiltonian (RPH) approach and the corresponding parity violating potentials by means of quantum chemical calculations including our recently developed Multiconfiguration linear response (MC-LR) approach to electroweak quantum chemistry. The calculated ground-state torsional tunneling splittings for all isotopomers of Cl2O2 are much smaller than the parity violating energy differences Delta(pv)E between the enantiomers of these molecules and therefore parity violation is predicted to dominate the quantum dynamics of stereomutation at low energies. We also compare these with torsional ground-state tunneling splittings and parity violating energy differences of the whole series of axially chiral HXYH(+) isotopomers (with X, Y= Cl(+), O, S, Se, Te). A comparison with our previous results for the homologous molecule Cl2S2 shows that for Cl2O2 a spectroscopic high-resolution analysis should be easier and the energy region of large tunneling splittings should be more easily accessible by IR excitation. We thus propose a scheme using "tunneling switching" with vibrational excitation in order to carry out the measurement of time-dependent parity violation in superposition states of initially well-defined parity. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of such an experiment that can be carried out entirely in the IR spectral range (for Cl2O2 or related molecules).

IR/UV double resonant spectroscopy of the methyl radical: Determination of ν3 in the 3pz Rydberg state

IR+UV double resonant ion-dip and ion-enhancement spectroscopies are employed to study the nu3 asymmetric CH stretch vibration fundamental of CH3 in the ground and 3p(z) Rydberg electronic states. CH3 radical is synthesized in the supersonic jet expansion by flash pyrolysis of azomethane (CH3NNCH3) prior to the expansion. The Q band of the 3(1) (1) 3p(z)<--X transition of CH3, not detected by conventional UV resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy, is determined to lie at 59,898 cm(-1) using IR+UV REMPI spectroscopy. Energy of the asymmetric CH stretch of CH3 in the 3p(z) Rydberg state, nu3(3p(z)), is 3087 cm(-1), redshifted by approximately 74 cm(-1) with respect to ground state nu3(X).
