Abstract
Computational and condensed phase experimental evidence for the existence of S∴N and S∴O hemibonded structures has been reported previously, but no gas phase experimental evidence has been reported. To experimentally explore the existence of the S∴N and S∴O hemibonds in the gas phase, we recorded the infrared photodissociation action spectra of four cationic clusters: [CH3SH-NH3]+, [CH3SCH3-NH3]+, [CH3SCH3-H2O]+, and [CH3OCH3-H2O]+. Combined with the calculation results, it is found that the S∴N hemibonded structure is competitive with the S⋯HN H-bonded structure, though only the latter structure is actually observed in [CH3SH-NH3]+. The spectral and theoretical results show that hemibonds can form between the second- (oxygen or nitrogen) and the third-period elements (sulfur) in the heterodimer clusters of [CH3SCH3-NH3]+ and [CH3SCH3-H2O]+. However, the S∴N and S∴O hemibonded structures are found competitive with the C⋯HN and CH⋯O H-bonded structures, respectively, and both the structures coexist. On the other hand, the O∴O hemibonded structure is much less stable than other hydrogen bonded (H-bonded) structures in [CH3OCH3-H2O]+, and it shows no clear contribution to the observed spectrum. This study provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the existence of S∴N and S∴O hemibonds in the gas phase and their competition with the H-bonds, which may be also fundamentally important in biological processes.

Abstract
One-electron oxidation of 2-selenouracil (2-SeU) by hydroxyl (●OH) and azide (●N3) radicals leads to various primary reactive intermediates. Their optical absorption spectra and kinetic characteristics were studied by pulse radiolysis with UV-vis spectrophotometric and conductivity detection and by the density functional theory (DFT) method. The transient absorption spectra recorded in the reactions of ●OH with 2-SeU are dominated by an absorption band with an λmax = 440 nm, the intensity of which depends on the concentration of 2-SeU and pH. Based on the combination of conductometric and DFT studies, the transient absorption band observed both at low and high concentrations of 2-SeU was assigned to the dimeric 2c-3e Se-Se-bonded radical in neutral form (2●). The dimeric radical (2●) is formed in the reaction of a selenyl-type radical (6●) with 2-SeU, and both radicals are in equilibrium with Keq = 1.3 × 104 M−1 at pH 4 (below the pKa of 2-SeU). Similar equilibrium with Keq = 4.4 × 103 M−1 was determined for pH 10 (above the pKa of 2-SeU), which admittedly involves the same radical (6●) but with a dimeric 2c-3e Se-Se bonded radical in anionic form (2●−). In turn, at the lowest concentration of 2-SeU (0.05 mM) and pH 10, the transient absorption spectrum is dominated by an absorption band with an λmax = 390 nm, which was assigned to the ●OH adduct to the double bond at C5 carbon atom (3●) based on DFT calculations. Similar spectral and kinetic features were also observed during the ●N3-induced oxidation of 2-SeU. In principle, our results mostly revealed similarities in one-electron oxidation pathways of 2-SeU and 2-thiouracil (2-TU). The major difference concerns the stability of dimeric radicals with a 2c-3e chalcogen-chalcogen bond in favor of 2-SeU.

Abstract
The existence of a two-center, three-electron hemibond in the first solvation shell of •OH(aq) has long been a matter of debate. The hemibond manifests in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations as a small-r feature in the oxygen radial distribution function (RDF) for H2O···•OH, but that feature disappears when semilocal density functionals are replaced with hybrids, suggesting a self-interaction artifact. Using periodic simulations at the PBE0+D3 level, we demonstrate that the hemibond is actually still present (as evidenced by delocalization of the spin density) but is obscured by the hydrogen-bonded feature in the RDF due to a slight elongation of the hemibond. Computed electronic spectra for •OH(aq) are in excellent agreement with experiment and confirm that hemibond-like configurations play an outsized role in the spectroscopy due to an intense charge-transfer transition that is strongly attenuated in hydrogen-bonded configurations. Apparently, 25% exact exchange (as in PBE0) is insufficient to eliminate delocalization of unpaired spins.

Abstract
Oxidative damage to 2-thiouracil (2-TU) by hydroxyl (•OH) and azide (●N3) radicals produces various primary reactive intermediates. Their optical absorption spectra and kinetic characteristics were studied by pulse radiolysis with UV-vis spectrophotometric and conductivity detection and by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method. The transient absorption spectra recorded in the reactions of •OH with 2-TU depend on the concentration of 2-TU, however, only slightly on pH. At low concentrations, they are characterized by a broad absorption band with a weakly pronounced maxima located at λ = 325, 340 and 385 nm, whereas for high concentrations, they are dominated by an absorption band with λmax ≈ 425 nm. Based on calculations using TD-DFT method, the transient absorption spectra at low concentration of 2-TU were assigned to the ●OH-adducts to the double bond at C5 and C6 carbon atoms (3●, 4●) and 2c-3e bonded ●OH adduct to sulfur atom (1…●OH) and at high concentration of 2-TU also to the dimeric 2c-3e S-S-bonded radical in neutral form (2●). The dimeric radical (2●) is formed in the reaction of thiyl-type radical (6●) with 2-TU and both radicals are in an equilibrium with Keq = 4.2 × 103 M-1. Similar equilibrium (with Keq = 4.3 × 103 M-1) was found for pH above the pKa of 2-TU which involves admittedly the same radical (6●) but with the dimeric 2c-3e S-S bonded radical in anionic form (2●-). In turn, ●N3-induced oxidation of 2-TU occurs via radical cation with maximum spin location on the sulfur atom which subsequently undergoes deprotonation at N1 atom leading again to thiyl-type radical (6●). This radical is a direct precursor of dimeric radical (2●).

Abstract
Changes of the excess charge accommodation motif in hemibonded and protonated hydrogen sulfide by microsolvation are studied by infrared spectroscopy of [(H2S)n(X)1]+ and H+(H2S)n(X)1 (n = 1 and 2, X = water, methanol, and ethanol) clusters. While the hemibond in the (H2S)2+ ion core is stable to the microhydration by a single water molecule, the hemibond is broken by the proton transfer with the microsolvation by a single methanol or ethanol molecule. Hetero hemibond formation between hydrogen sulfide and these solvent molecules is not observed. On the other hand, the excess proton in H+(H2S)n can be easily transferred to the solvent molecule, even though the proton affinity of the solvent molecule is lower than that of hydrogen sulfide. Implications of these results to the charge accommodation by sulfur under the biological conditions are discussed.

Abstract
A theoretical investigation on the interaction of various sulfides and their fluorinated counterparts (H2S, HSF, F2S, CH3SH, CH3SF, CH2FSH, CH2FSF, NH2SH, NH2SF) with atomic chlorine has been carried out using density functional theory (DFT) based LC-BLYP/aug-cc-pVTZ and sophisticated ab initio CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ methods. The present study is intended to discuss the influence of the substituents implanted at the sulfur atom on the bonding parameters. The optimized geometries reveal that intermolecular S···Cl distances are short and range between 2.423 and 2.561 Å. A strong contraction of the S-F bond is also predicted. Two-center-three-electron S···Cl bonds are formed; the interaction energies are large and range from -33.9 to -70.1 kJ mol-1. Very surprisingly, the interaction energies are greater and the intermolecular distances are shorter for F-substituted sulfides than for unsubstituted ones. This is in complete contrast with the lower proton affinities and less negative electrostatic potentials of fluorinated sulfides. AIM analysis, the charge transfer from the sulfur atom to the Cl atom, and the spin densities on the Cl and S atoms are considered to explain this unusual behavior. The hyperconjugation energies from the LP(F) to the σ*(S-Cl) antibonding orbital can be considered as one of the stabilizing factors for the greater stability of the fluorinated complexes over the nonfluorinated ones.

Abstract
In the absence of its substrate, the auto-reduction of the high-valent bis-Fe(IV) state of the dihaem enzyme MauG is coupled to oxidative damage of a methionine residue. Transient kinetic and solvent isotope effect studies reveal that this process occurs via two sequential long-range electron transfer (ET) reactions from methionine to the haems. The first ET is coupled to proton transfer (PT) to the haems from solvent via an ordered water network. The second ET is coupled to PT at the methionine site and occurs during the oxidation of the methionine to a sulfoxide. This process proceeds via Compound I- and Compound II-like haem intermediates. It is proposed that the methionine radical is stabilized by a two-centre three-electron (2c3e) bond. This provides insight into how oxidative damage to proteins may occur without direct contact with a reactive oxygen species, and how that damage can be propagated through the protein.

Abstract
A type of relay station for electron transfer in proteins, three-piece five-electron bonding, is introduced in this paper, which is also first proposed here. The ab initio calculations predict the formation of S:Π∴S↔S∴Π:S resonance binding with an aromatic ring located in the middle of two sulfur-containing groups, which may participate in electron-hole transport in proteins. These special structures can lower the local ionization energies to capture electron holes efficiently and may be easily formed and broken because of their proper binding energies. In addition, the UV-vis spectra provide evidence of the formations of the three-piece five-electron binding. The cooperation of three adjacent pieces may be advantage to promote electron transfer a longer distance.

Abstract
The protein residue methionine (Met) is one of the main targets of oxidizing free radicals produced in oxidative stress. Despite its biological importance, the mechanism of the oxidation of this residue is still partly unknown. In particular the one-electron redox potentials of the couple Met(•+)/Met have not been measured. In this work, two approaches, experimental as well as theoretical, were applied for three dipeptides L-Met L-Gly, L-Gly L-Met and L-Met L-Met. Measurements by electrochemistry indicated differences in the ease of oxidation. Two DFT methods (BH&HLYP and PBE0) with two basis sets (6-31G(d) and 6-311+G(2d,2p)) were used to determine the redox potentials of Met in these peptides present in different conformations. In agreement with experimental results, we show that they vary with the sequence and the spatial structure of the peptide, most of the values being higher than 1 V (up to 2 V) vs NHE.

Abstract
B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were performed on the species with intramolecular O-H···O hydrogen bonds. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and the Electron Localization Function (ELF) method were applied to analyze these interactions. Numerous relationships between ELF and QTAIM parameters were found. It is interesting that the CVB index based on the ELF method as well as the total electron energy density at the bond critical point of the proton-acceptor distance (H(bcp)) may be treated as universal descriptors of the hydrogen bond strength, they are also useful to estimate the covalent character of this interaction. There are so-called resonance-assisted hydrogen bonds (RAHBs) among the species analyzed here. It was found that there are not any distinct differences between RAHBs and the other intramolecular hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
The recent study on the *OH-induced oxidation of calmodulin, a regulatory "calcium sensor" protein containing nine methionine (Met) residues, has supported the first experimental evidence in a protein for the formation of S therefore N three-electron bonded radical complexes involving the sulfur atom of a methionine residue and the amide groups in adjacent peptide bonds. To characterize reactions of oxidized methionine residues in proteins containing multiple methionine residues in more detail, in the current study, a small model cyclic dipeptide, c-(L-Met-L-Met), was oxidized by *OH radicals generated via pulse radiolysis and the ensuing reactive intermediates were monitored by time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopic and conductometric techniques. The picture that emerges from this investigation shows there is an efficient formation of the Met (S therefore N) radicals, in spite of the close proximity of two sulfur atoms, located in the side chains of methionine residues, and in spite of the close proximity of sulfur atoms and oxygen atoms, located in the peptide bonds. Moreover, it is shown, for the first time, that the formation of Met(S therefore N) radicals can proceed directly, via H+-transfer, with the involvement of hydrogen from the peptide bond to an intermediary hydroxysulfuranyl radical. Ultimately, the Met(S therefore N) radicals decayed via two different pH-dependent reaction pathways, (i) conversion into sulfur-sulfur, intramolecular, three-electron-bonded radical cations and (ii) a proposed hydrolytic cleavage of the protonated form of the intramolecular, three-electron-bonded radicals [Met(S therefore N)/Met(S therefore NH)+] followed by electron transfer and decarboxylation. Surprisingly, also alpha-(alkylthio)alkyl radicals enter the latter mechanism in a pH-dependent manner. Density functional theory computations were performed on the model c-(L-Met-Gly) and its radicals in order to obtain optimizations and energies to aid in the interpretation of the experiments on c-(L-Met-L-Met).

Abstract
The reaction of Cl atoms with iodoethane has been studied via a combination of laser flash photolysis/resonance fluorescence (LFP-RF), environmental chamber/Fourier transform (FT)IR, and quantum chemical techniques. Above 330 K, the flash photolysis data indicate that the reaction proceeds predominantly via hydrogen abstraction. The following Arrhenius expressions (in units of cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1)) apply over the temperature range 334-434 K for reaction of Cl with CH3CH2I (k4(H)) and CD3CD2I (k4(D)): k4(H) = (6.53 +/- 3.40) x 10(-11) exp[-(428 +/- 206)/T] and k4(D) = (2.21 +/- 0.44) x 10(-11) exp[-(317 +/- 76)/T]. At room temperature and below, the reaction proceeds both via hydrogen abstraction and via reversible formation of an iodoethane/Cl adduct. Analysis of the LFP-RF data yields a binding enthalpy (0 K) for CD3CD2I x Cl of 57 +/- 10 kJ mol(-1). Calculations using density functional theory show that the adduct is characterized by a C-I-Cl bond angle of 84.5 degrees; theoretical binding enthalpies of 38.2 kJ/mol, G2'[ECP(S)], and 59.0 kJ mol(-1), B3LYP/ECP, are reasonably consistent with the experimentally derived result. Product studies conducted in the environmental chamber show that hydrogen abstraction from both the -CH2I and -CH3 groups occur to a significant extent and also provide evidence for a reaction of the CH3CH2I x Cl adduct with CH3CH2I, leading to CH3CH2Cl formation. Complementary environmental chamber studies of the reaction of Cl atoms with 2-iodopropane, CH3CHICH3, are also presented. As determined by relative rate methods, the reaction proceeds with an effective rate coefficient, k6, of (5.0 +/- 0.6) x 10(-11) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1) at 298 K. Product studies indicate that this reaction also occurs via two abstraction channels (from the CH3 groups and from the -CHI- group) and via reversible adduct formation.

Abstract
In the present work the potential energy surface (PES) corresponding to the different initiation routes of the oxidation mechanism of DMS by hydroxyl radical in the absence of O(2) has been studied, and connections among the different stationary points have been established. Single-point high level electronic structure calculations at lower level optimized geometries have been shown to be necessary to assure convergence of energy barriers and reaction energies. Our results demonstrate that the oxidation of DMS by OH turns out to be initiated via three channels: a hydrogen abstraction channel that through a saddle point structure finally leads to CH(3)SCH(2) + H(2)O, an addition-elimination channel that firstly leads to an adduct complex (AD) and then via an elimination saddle point structure finally gives CH(3)SOH and CH(3) products, and a third channel that through a concerted pathway leads to CH(3)OH and CH(3)S. The H-abstraction and the addition-elimination channels initiate by a common pathway that goes through the same reactant complex (RC). Our theoretical results agree quite well with the branching ratios experimentally assigned to the formation of the different products. Finally, the calculated equilibrium constants of the formation of the complex AD and the hexadeuterated complex AD from the corresponding reactants, as a function of the temperature, are in good accordance with the experimental values.

Abstract
Proton-transfer reactions in aqueous solutions of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) were studied using a fluorescent probe and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Protolytic photodissociation of 1-hydroxypyrene (HP) in water was found to be very slow. The PMA polyanion appeared to be very inefficient as a proton acceptor in the excited-state reaction with HP. However, a drastic increase in the deprotonation efficiency was observed in PMA solutions with the same pH values close to neutral when dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) was added. The protonated form of HP, as well as its anion, was shown to be solubilized in polyion-covered micelles. Time-resolved fluorescence data suggested at least two localization sites with different reactivities toward PMA. FTIR spectroscopy was used to quantify the degree of ionization of PMA in PMA-DTAC mixtures. The IR data indicated that protolytic dissociation of PMA could be well described by the Henderson-Hasselbach equation with an apparent pK of 6.6. In contrast, the fluorescent data revealed cooperative protonation of the PMA groups interacting with HP localized within surfactant assemblies. This selective protonation at a pH close to neutral may be associated with a conformational transition in the polymer-surfactant complex.
