Pd(n)Ag(4-n) and Pd(n)Pt(4-n) clusters on MgO (100): a density functional surface genetic algorithm investigation

The novel surface mode of the Birmingham Cluster Genetic Algorithm (S-BCGA) is employed for the global optimisation of noble metal tetramers upon an MgO (100) substrate at the GGA-DFT level of theory. The effect of element identity and alloying in surface-bound neutral subnanometre clusters is determined by energetic comparison between all compositions of PdnAg(4-n) and PdnPt(4-n). While the binding strengths to the surface increase in the order Pt > Pd > Ag, the excess energy profiles suggest a preference for mixed clusters for both cases. The binding of CO is also modelled, showing that the adsorption site can be predicted solely by electrophilicity. Comparison to CO binding on a single metal atom shows a reversal of the 5σ-d activation process for clusters, weakening the cluster-surface interaction on CO adsorption. Charge localisation determines homotop, CO binding and surface site preferences. The electronic behaviour, which is intermediate between molecular and metallic particles allows for tunable features in the subnanometre size range.

Structural, Energetic, and Vibrational Properties of NOx Adsorption on Agn, n = 1−8

The density functional theory is used to explore structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of NO, NO(2), and NO(3) adsorption on small silver clusters, Ag(n), with n =1-8. Generally, NO adsorbs in a top configuration, whereas NO(2) and NO(3) are adsorbed in bridge configuration. NO2 and NO3 introduce pronounced structural relaxations in the clusters. In particular, the transition size from planar to three-dimensional structures is modified. For each cluster size, the adsorption energies follow the trend E(a) (NO) < E(a) (NO(2)) < E(a) (NO(3)). The adsorption energies show a marked odd/even alternation with a stronger bonding to odd clusters. Analysis of the electronic structure reveals an ionic bond mechanism for NO(2) and NO(3). Odd/even effects are also present in vibrational properties of the adsorbed radicals. With respect to the gas phase, the largest shifts are calculated for adsorption on odd clusters. Possible implications of the results for Ag/Al(2)O(3) HC-SCR catalysts are discussed.

CO Adsorption on Ag(100) and Ag/MgO(100)

Theoretical studies of CO adsorption on a two-layer Ag(100) film and on a two-layer Ag film on a MgO(100) support are reported. Ab initio calculations are carried at the configuration interaction level of theory using embedding methods to treat the metal-adsorbate region and the extended ionic solid. The metal overlayer is considered in two different structures: where Ag-Ag distances are equal to the value in the bulk solid, and for a slightly expanded lattice in which the Ag-Ag distances are equal to the O-O distance on the MgO(100) surface. The calculated adsorption energy of Ag(100) on MgO(100) is 0.58 eV per Ag interfacial atom; the Ag-O distance is 2.28 A. A small transfer of electrons from MgO to Ag occurs on deposition of the silver overlayer. CO adsorption at an atop Ag site is found to be the most stable for adsorption on the two-layer Ag film and also for adsorption on Ag deposited on the oxide; CO adsorption energies range from 0.12 to 0.19 eV. The CO adsorption energy is reduced for the Ag/MgO system compared to adsorption on the unsupported metal film thereby providing evidence for a direct electronic effect of the oxide support at the metal overlayer surface. Expansion of the Ag-Ag distance in the two-layer system also reduces the adsorption energy.
