Abstract
To reveal the influence of different substituents on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and photophysical properties of 4′-N, N-dimethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (DMA3HF), two novel molecules (DMA3HF-CN and DMA3HF-NH2) were designed by introducing the classical electron-withdrawing group cyano (-CN) and electron-donating group amino (-NH2). The three molecules in the acetonitrile phase were systematically researched by applying the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The excited-state hydrogen bond enhancement mechanism was confirmed, and the hydrogen bond intensity followed the decreasing order of DMA3HF-NH2 > DMA3HF > DMA3HF-CN, which can be explained at the electronic level by natural bond orbital, fuzzy bond order, and frontier molecular orbital analyses. Moreover, we found from the electronic spectra that the fluorescence intensity of the three molecules in keto form is relatively strong. Moreover, the calculated absorption properties indicated that introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN could significantly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band. In summary, the introduction of an electron-donating group -NH2 can promote the ESIPT reaction of DMA3HF, without changing the photophysical properties, while introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN can greatly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band, but hinders the occurrence of the ESIPT reaction.

Abstract
The relationship between the photoexcitation dynamics and the structures of semi-aliphatic polyimides (3H-PIs) was investigated using ultrafast fluorescent emission spectroscopy at atmospheric and increased pressures of up to 4 GPa. The 3H-PI films exhibited prominent fluorescence with extremely large Stokes shifts (Δν > 10 000 cm-1) through an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) induced by keto-enol tautomerism at the isolated dianhydride moiety. The incorporation of bulky -CH3 and -CF3 side groups at the diamine moiety of the PIs increased the quantum yields of the ESIPT fluorescence owing to an enhanced interchain free volume. In addition, 3H-PI films emitted another fluorescence at shorter wavelengths originating from closely packed polyimide (PI) chains (in aggregated forms), which was mediated through a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from an isolated enol form into aggregated forms. The FRET process became more dominant than the ESIPT process at higher pressures owing to an enhancement of the FRET efficiency caused by the increased dipole-dipole interactions associated with a densification of the PI chain packing. The efficiency of the FRET rapidly increased by applying pressure up to 1 GPa owing to an effective compression of the interchain free volume and additionally gradually increased at higher pressures owing to structural and/or conformational changes in the main chains.

Abstract
The effect of intermolecular interactions on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in 4'-N,N-dimethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (DMHF) doped in acetonitrile crystals was investigated by measuring its temperature dependence of steady-state fluorescence excitation and fluorescence spectra and picosecond time-resolved spectra. The relative intensity of emission from the excited state of the normal form (N*) to that from the excited state of the tautomer form (T*) and spectral features changed markedly with temperature. Unusual changes in the spectral shift and spectral features were observed in the fluorescence spectra measured between 200 and 218 K, indicating that a solid-solid phase transition of DMHF-doped acetonitrile crystals occurred. Time-resolved fluorescence spectra suggested conformational relaxation of the N* state competed with ESIPT after photoexcitation and the ESIPT rate increased with temperature in the low-temperature phase of acetonitrile. However, the intermolecular interaction of N* with acetonitrile in the high-temperature phase markedly stabilized the potential minimum of the fluorescent N* state and slowed the ESIPT. This stabilization can be explained by reorganization of acetonitrile originating from the strong electric dipole-dipole interaction between DMHF and acetonitrile molecules.

Abstract
Time-dependent density functional theory method at the def-TZVP/B3LYP level was employed to investigate the intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonding dynamics in the first excited (S1) state of 4'-dimethylaminoflavonol (DMAF) monomer and in ethanol solution. In the DMAF monomer, we demonstrated that the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) takes place in the S1 state. This excited state ICT process was followed by intramolecular proton transfer. Our calculated results are in good agreement with the mechanism proposed in experimental work. For the hydrogen-bonded DMAF-EtOH complex, it was demonstrated that the intermolecular hydrogen bonds can induce the formation of the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state and the conformational twisting is along the C3-C4 bond. Moreover, the intermolecular hydrogen bonds can also facilitate the intermolecular double proton transfer in the TICT state. A stepwise intermolecular double proton transfer process was revealed. Therefore, the intermolecular hydrogen bonds can alter the mechanism of intramolecular charge transfer and proton transfer in the excited state for the DMAF molecule.

Abstract
Charge and proton transfer reactions in the excited states of organic dyes can be coupled in many different ways. Despite the complementarity of charges, they can occur on different time scales and in different directions of the molecular framework. In certain cases, excited-state equilibrium can be established between the charge-transfer and proton-transfer species. The interplay of these reactions can be modulated and even reversed by variations in dye molecular structures and changes of the surrounding media. With knowledge of the mechanisms of these processes, desired rates and directions can be achieved, and thus the multiple emission spectral features can be harnessed. These features have found versatile applications in a number of cutting-edge technological areas, particularly in fluorescence sensing and imaging.

Abstract
A detailed photophysical study of the plant flavonoid fisetin in a dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayer membrane has been carried out. Fisetin is found to partition well into the membrane (K(p) = (4.6 ± 0.5) × 10(5) in solid gel phase and (5.1 ± 0.5) × 10(5) in liquid crystalline phase). A fluorescence quenching study using cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as the quencher suggests that fisetin molecules are generally present near the head group region of the lipid bilayer membrane. The temperature dependence of the fluorescence lifetime indicates a local heterogeneity in the distribution of fisetin within the bilayer membrane. The phototautomer form of fisetin, which is the primary emitting species from the lipid membrane, has a large Stoke's shift (175 nm) and fluoresces with an intense green fluorescence, which can make the molecule a good dye for marker and bioimaging applications. Membrane-bound fisetin shows sensitive variations of fluorescence intensity, lifetime, and anisotropy parameters in cholesterol-containing DMPC membranes, in mixed phospholipids, and as a function of temperature. This suggests that fisetin can be an efficient fluorescent molecular probe for sensing lipid bilayer membrane related changes. The location of fisetin in the membrane and the observed cholesterol-induced expulsion of fisetin may possibly have implications in the antioxidant activity of fisetin.

Abstract
Fluorochromic dyes derived from 9-aminoacridinium containing a vinylene function with electron withdrawing groups such as diethyl [(acridinium-9-ylamino)methylene]malonate (I), ethyl [(acridinium-9-ylamino)methylene]cyanoacetate (II), [(acridinium-9-ylamino)methylene]malononitrile (III), are prepared and studied in their monoprotonated form. Absorption spectra of the new dyes are red shifted compared to that of the precursor dye. The observed dual fluorescence and multiexponential decay are ascribed to normal emission from the acridinium chromophore in addition to excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ESICT) process. However, biexponential decay character is observed only for the dicyano derivative (compound III), whereas for the two other systems, more complex kinetics and a three-component decay is recovered. The analysis of the fluorescence decays in different solvents for the first two compounds reveals two short-lived components in the range of 160-350 ps and 1.1-3.0 ns, related to formation and decay of the ESICT state, plus a third one with decay time of about 9 ns, which is ascribed to the normal emission from the acridinium chromophore as an enol tautomer or as an intramolecular H-bond conformer (closed form tautomer). For the dicyano derivative, in which the absence of carbonyl group precludes the H-bond interaction, the biexponential fitting reveals a slightly fast formation rate of the ESICT state with values on the order of 10(10) s(-1), whereas its decay time is between 0.6 and 3.2 ns, depending on the solvent used.

Abstract
A new fluorochromic dye was obtained from the reaction of 9-aminoacridine with ethyl-2-cyano-3-ethoxyacrylate. It displays complex fluorescence that is ascribed to normal emission from the acridine chromophore in addition to excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ESICT) formed upon light excitation. The analysis of the fluorescence decays in different solvents reveals two short-lived components in the range of 80-450 ps and 0.7-3.2 ns, ascribed to the formation and decay of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state, in addition to a third component of about 9.0 ns, which is related to the normal emission from the acridine singlet excited state, probably in an enol-imine tautomeric form. The ICT emission is readily quenched by water addition to polar solvents, and this effect is ascribed to changes in the keto-amine/enol-imine equilibrium of this fluorochromic dye.
