Zeolite-Tailored Active Site Proximity for the Efficient Production of Pentanoic Biofuels

Biofuel production can alleviate reliance on fossil resources and thus carbon dioxide emission. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) refers collectively to a series of important biorefinery processes to produce biofuels. Here, well-dispersed and ultra-small Ru metal nanoclusters (ca. 1 nm), confined within the micropores of zeolite Y, provide the required active site intimacy, which significantly boosts the chemoselectivity towards the production of pentanoic biofuels in the direct, one-pot HDO of neat ethyl levulinate. Crucial for improving catalyst stability is the addition of La, which upholds the confined proximity by preventing zeolite lattice deconstruction during catalysis. We have established and extended an understanding of the "intimacy criterion" in catalytic biomass valorization. These findings bring new understanding of HDO reactions over confined proximity sites, leading to potential application for pentanoic biofuels in biomass conversion.

Recent advances in catalytic systems in the prism of physicochemical properties to remediate toxic CO pollutants: A state-of-the-art review

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the most harmful pollutant in the air, causing environmental issues and adversely affecting humans and the vegetation and then raises global warming indirectly. CO oxidation is one of the most effective methods of reducing CO by converting it into carbon dioxide (CO₂) using a suitable catalytic system, due to its simplicity and great value for pollution control. The CO oxidation reaction has been widely studied in various applications, including proton-exchange membrane fuel cell technology and catalytic converters. CO oxidation has also been of great academic interest over the last few decades as a model reaction. Many review studies have been produced on catalysts development for CO oxidation, emphasizing noble metal catalysts, the configuration of catalysts, process parameter influence, and the deactivation of catalysts. Nevertheless, there is still some gap in a state of the art knowledge devoted exclusively to synergistic interactions between catalytic activity and physicochemical properties. In an effort to fill this gap, this analysis updates and clarifies innovations for various latest developed catalytic CO oxidation systems with contemporary evaluation and the synergistic relationship between oxygen vacancies, strong metal-support interaction, particle size, metal dispersion, chemical composition acidity/basicity, reducibility, porosity, and surface area. This review study is useful for environmentalists, scientists, and experts working on mitigating the harmful effects of CO on both academic and commercial levels in the research and development sectors.

Tutorial: structural characterization of isolated metal atoms and subnanometric metal clusters in zeolites

The encapsulation of subnanometric metal entities (isolated metal atoms and metal clusters with a few atoms) in porous materials such as zeolites can be an effective strategy for the stabilization of those metal species and therefore can be further used for a variety of catalytic reactions. However, owing to the complexity of zeolite structures and their low stability under the electron beam, it is challenging to obtain atomic-level structural information of the subnanometric metal species encapsulated in zeolite crystallites. In this protocol, we show the application of a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) technique that records simultaneously the high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) images and integrated differential phase-contrast (iDPC) images for structural characterization of subnanometric Pt and Sn species within MFI zeolite. The approach relies on the use of a computational model to simulate results obtained under different conditions where the metals are present in different positions within the zeolite. This imaging technique allows to obtain simultaneously the spatial information of heavy elements (Pt and Sn in this work) and the zeolite framework structure, enabling direct determination of the location of the subnanometric metal species. Moreover, we also present the combination of other spectroscopy techniques as complementary tools for the STEM-iDPC imaging technique to obtain global understanding and insights on the spatial distributions of subnanometric metal species in zeolite structure. These structural insights can provide guidelines for the rational design of uniform metal-zeolite materials for catalytic applications.

Assessment of the Location of Pt Nanoparticles in Pt/zeolite Y/γ-Al2O3 Composite Catalysts

The location of Pt nanoparticles was studied in Pt/zeolite Y/γ-Al2O3 composite catalysts prepared by H2PtCl6 ⋅ 6H2O (CPA) or Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2 (PTA) as Pt precursors. The aim of this study is to validate findings from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) by using characterization techniques that sample larger amounts of catalyst per measurement. Quantitative X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the catalyst prepared with CPA led to a significantly higher Pt/Al atomic ratio than the catalyst prepared with PTA confirming that the 1-2 nm sized Pt nanoparticles in the former catalyst were located on the open and mesoporous γ-Al2O3 component, whereas they were located in the micropores of zeolite Y in the latter. By using infrared spectroscopy, a shift in the absorption band maximum of CO chemisorbed on Pt nanoparticles was observed, which can be attributed to a difference in electronic properties depending on the support of the Pt nanoparticles. Finally, model hydrogenation experiments were performed using β-phenylcinnamaldehyde, a reactant molecule with low diffusivity in zeolite Y micropores, resulting in a 5 times higher activity for the catalyst prepared by CPA compared to PTA. The combined use of these characterization techniques allow us to draw more robust conclusions on the ability to control the location of Pt nanoparticles by using either CPA or PTA as precursors in zeolite/γ-Al2O3 composite catalyst materials.

Tuning the Catalytic Activity of Pd x Ni y (x + y = 6) Bimetallic Clusters for Hydrogen Dissociative Chemisorption and Desorption

Density functional theory was used to study dissociative chemisorption and desorption on Pd _x Ni _y (x + y = 6) bimetallic clusters. The H₂ dissociative chemisorption energies and the H desorption energies at full H saturation were computed. It was found that bimetallic clusters tend to have higher chemisorption energy than pure clusters, and the capacity of Pd₃Ni₃ and Pd₂Ni₄ clusters to adsorb H atoms is substantially higher than that of other clusters. The H desorption energies of Pd₃Ni₃ and Pd₂Ni₄ are also lower than that of the Pd₆ cluster and comparable to that of the Ni₆ cluster, indicating that it is easier to pull the H atom out of these bimetallic catalysts. This suggests that the catalytic efficiency for specific Pd _x Ni _y bimetallic clusters may be superior to bare Ni or Pd clusters and that it may be possible to tune bimetallic nanoparticles to obtain better catalytic performance.

Highly Efficient Elimination of Carbon Monoxide with Binary Copper-Manganese Oxide Contained Ordered Nanoporous Silicas

Ordered nanoporous silicas containing various binary copper-manganese oxides were prepared as catalytic systems for effective carbon monoxide elimination. The carbon monoxide elimination efficiency was demonstrated as a function of the [Mn]/[Cu] ratio and reaction time. The prepared catalysts were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, small- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) for structural analysis. Moreover, quantitative analysis of the binary metal oxides within the nanoporous silica was achieved by inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The binary metal oxide-loaded nanoporous silica showed high room temperature catalytic efficiency with over 98 % elimination of carbon monoxide at higher concentration ratio of [Mn]/[Cu].

Enhancing tetralin hydrogenation activity and sulphur-tolerance of Pt/MCM-41 catalyst with Al(NO3)3, AlCl3 and Al(CH3)3

The isolation, anchor and electron-withdrawing effect of aluminum promoters greatly improve the tetralin hydrogenation activity and sulfur-tolerance of Pt/MCM-41 catalyst.

Amino-acid-based, lipid-directed, in situ synthesis and fabrication of gold nanoparticles on silica: a metamaterial framework with pronounced catalytic activity

We introduce a new example of the in situ preparation and fabrication of stable gold nanoparticles on silica in an aqueous medium, by using only lipid-grafted silica particles in HAuCl(4) solution without addition of any external reducing agent. The lipid-grafted silica particles have been synthesized by graft-to methodology and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The metamaterial particles show high catalytic activity for the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol.

Probing the surfaces of heterogeneous catalysts by in situ IR spectroscopy

This critical review describes the reactivity of heterogeneous catalysts from the point of view of four simple, but essential for Chemistry, molecules (namely dihydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide and ethylene) that are considered as probes or as reactants in combination with "in situ" controlled temperature and pressure Infrared spectroscopy. The fundamental properties of H(2), CO, NO and C(2)H(4) are shortly described in order to justify their different behaviour in respect of isolated sites in different environments, extended surfaces, clusters, crystalline or amorphous materials. The description is given by considering some "key studies" and trying to evidence similarities and differences among surfaces and probes (572 references).

Application of AXAFS Spectroscopy to Transition-Metal Oxides: Influence of the Nearest and Next Nearest Neighbour Shells in Vanadium Oxides

The influence of changes in coordination number, interatomic distances, and oxidation state on the intensity and centroid position of the Fourier transform (FT) of the atomic X-ray absorption fine structure (AXAFS) peak of vanadium oxide bulk model compounds and alumina-supported vanadium oxide clusters has been investigated. Using Na3VO4 and V2O5 as model compounds, it has been shown that the nearest neighbour shells have a pronounced influence on the AXAFS intensity; specifically, a 40 % decrease in intensity was observed between these two compounds. Secondly, the influence of partial reduction of the vanadium oxide species has been determined; this led to a 50 % decrease in the AXAFS intensity and to an increase in the centroid position. Furthermore, the influence of the vanadium oxide loading has been assessed. A non-linear relationship between the vanadium oxide loading and the AXAFS intensity has been found, indicating that the AXAFS intensity is sensitive to the formation of V-O-V bridging bonds between the vanadium VO4 clusters. The results show that AXAFS can be used to probe the relative energy level of the vanadium valence orbitals.

Atomic XAFS as a tool to probe the reactivity of metal oxide catalysts: quantifying metal oxide support effects

The potential of atomic XAFS (AXAFS) to directly probe the catalytic performances of a set of supported metal oxide catalysts has been explored for the first time. For this purpose, a series of 1 wt % supported vanadium oxide catalysts have been prepared differing in their oxidic support material (SiO2, Al2O3, Nb2O5, and ZrO2). Previous characterization results have shown that these catalysts contain the same molecular structure on all supports, i.e., a monomeric VO4 species. It was found that the catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde and the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propene increases in the order SiO2 < Al2O3 < Nb2O5 < ZrO2. The opposite trend was observed for the dehydrogenation of propane to propene in the absence of oxygen. Interestingly, the intensity of the Fourier transform AXAFS peak decreases in the same order. This can be interpreted by an increase in the binding energy of the vanadium valence orbitals when the ionicity of the support (increasing electron charge on the support oxygen atoms) increases. Moreover, detailed EXAFS analysis shows a systematic decrease of the V-Ob(-M(support)) and an increase of a the V-O(H) bond length, when going from SiO2 to ZrO2. This implies a more reactive OH group for ZrO2, in line with the catalytic data. These results show that the electronic structure and consequently the catalytic behavior of the VO4 cluster depend on the ionicity of the support oxide. These results demonstrate that AXAFS spectroscopy can be used to understand and predict the catalytic performances of supported metal oxide catalysts. Furthermore, it enables the user to gather quantitative insight in metal oxide support interactions.

Synthesis of silica-gold nanocomposites and their porous nanoparticles by an in-situ approach

We demonstrate the one-step synthesis of a silica-gold nanocomposite by simultaneous hydrolysis and reduction of gold chloride. The aminophenyl group was used as a reducing agent, and the trimethoxy silane group acts a precursor for the formation of silica. The porous gold nanoparticles were formed by etching out the silica-gold nanocomposite by hydrofluoric acid. The electron diffraction of porous gold nanoparticles showed that the particle are polycrystalline with FCC structure. The silica-gold nanocomposite exhibited nonlinear current-voltage behavior, and the porous gold nanoparticles displayed linear current-voltage behavior.

Identification of CO Adsorption Sites in Supported Pt Catalysts Using High-Energy-Resolution Fluorescence Detection X-ray Spectroscopy

High-energy-resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) X-ray spectroscopy is presented as a new tool for the identification of the bonding sites of reactants in supported metal catalysts. The type of adsorption site of CO on an alumina-supported platinum catalyst and the orbitals involved in the bonding are identified. Because X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is element-specific and can be used under high pressures and temperatures, in situ HERFD XAS can be applied to a swathe of catalytic systems, including alloys.

A Small Paramagnetic Platinum Cluster in an NaY Zeolite: Characterization and Hydrogen Adsorption and Desorption

A well-defined cluster containing 12 equivalent platinum atoms was prepared by ion exchange of an NaY zeolite, followed by hydrogen reduction. It was characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, hyperfine sublevel correlation (HYSCORE), and theoretical calculations. Combing the results of the experiments with density functional calculations, the likely structure of this cluster is icosahedral Pt13Hm, possibly with a low positive charge. The adsorbed H/D on the Pt cluster surface can be exchanged reversibly at room temperature. From H/D desorption experiments, an H2 binding energy of 1.36 eV is derived, in reasonable agreement with the calculated value but clearly larger than that for a (111) Pt single-crystal surface, revealing a finite size effect. While the hydrogen-covered cluster should clearly be regarded as a molecule, it is conceivable that the cluster adopts metallic character upon hydrogen desorption. It is likely that up to m=30 H atoms bind to this cluster with 12 surface atoms, which has important implications for the determination of the dispersion of small Pt catalyst particles by hydrogen chemisorption. Calculations as well as experiments give evidence of an interesting magnetic behavior with high-spin states playing a prominent role. There are strong indications that a reservoir of EPR silent but structurally similar clusters exists which can partly be converted to EPR visible species by H/D exchange or by gas adsorption.
