Nonradiative Relaxation in Thiophene-S,S-dioxide Derivatives: The Role of the Environment

Investigation of the Origin of High Photoluminescence Quantum Yield in Thienyl-S,S-dioxide AIEgens Oligomers by Temperature Dependent Optical Spectroscopy

The development of organic molecules showing high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in solid state is a fundamental step for the implementation of efficient light emitting devices. In this work the origin of the high PLQY of two trimers and two pentamers having one central thiophene-S,S-dioxide unit and two and four lateral thiophene or phenyl groups, respectively, is investigated by temperature dependent photoluminescence and time resolved photoluminescence measurements. The experimental results demonstrate that the molecules with lateral phenyl rings show higher PLQY due to a weaker coupling with intramolecular vibrations-related to variations in the radiative and non-radiative decay rates-and indicate different molecular rigidity as the main factors affecting the PLQY of this class of molecules.

Excited-state engineering of oligothiophenes via phosphorus chemistry towards strong fluorescent materials

Due to efficient intersystem crossing (ISC), combined with efficient non-radiative processes of the triplet excited state, oligothiophenes generally exhibit very weak photoluminescence. Phosphorus (P)-bridged terthiophenes (P-terThs) and phosphorus (P)-bridged bithiophenes (P-biThs) were synthesized. The diverse and well-defined P-chemistry has been applied to fine tune the photophysical properties of these materials. The asymmetric electronic coupling between the P-center and terThs suppressed the electronic interactions of two terTh and biTh moieties in the ground state S₀. Particularly, P-terThs and P-biThs having a positively charged P(+)-center induce pronounced asymmetric electronic environments on the two terThs and two biThs, respectively, which allows relaxation from the initial excited state via symmetry breaking charge transfer (SBCT) to give the charge separated state S_SBCT. P-terThs and P-biThs having a positively charged P(+)-center exhibit stronger SBCT than others, which may result in a weaker ISC of oligothiophenes, and consequently lead to the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) being as high as 71% and 39%, respectively. The current study uncovered detailed insights on the effects of phosphorus chemistry on the SBCT of oligothiophenes and their resulting effects on the photophysical properties of P-bridged oligothiophenes, which have not been previously addressed in oligothiophenes.

A class of fluorescent heterocyclic dyes revisited: photophysics, structure, and solvent effects

The photophysical behavior of a series of 2-methylthio-5-(Z-carbonyl)thieno-[3,4-e]-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-triazine-4-ones was investigated by absorption and emission spectroscopy in a range of solvents representing a systematic variation in polarity, polarizability, as well as hydrogen bond donating and accepting capabilities. In all the investigated compounds, the heterocyclic 6-membered ring of the chromophore is involved in interactions between electron donor and acceptor substituents on the thiophene ring. Throughout the series, the charge-donating methylthio group is kept constant, while the acceptor (Z-carbonyl) is varied between amide, ester, and ketone functionalities. The fluorescent first electronically excited state is primarily of intramolecular HOMO-LUMO charge transfer character. All members of the series exhibit solvent-dependent photophysics, although the magnitude of the dependence varies with the nature of the acceptor group. In addition to the solvent-sensitive photophysics, the investigated class of compounds shows high thermal and chemical stability. Among this class of heterocyclic dyes, the amide-substituted compound is superior with respect to high quantum yield and lifetime, and also shows the largest change in emission lifetimes and fluorescence quantum yields upon solvent variation (about 5-fold).

Spectral and photophysical studies on cruciform oligothiophenes in solution and the solid state

The photophysical and spectroscopic properties of a new class of oligothiophene derivatives, designated as cruciform oligomers, have been investigated in solution (room and low temperature) and in the solid state (as thin films in Zeonex matrixes). The study comprises absorption, emission, and triplet-triplet absorption spectra, together with quantitative measurements of quantum yields (fluorescence, intersystem crossing, internal conversion, and singlet oxygen formation) and lifetimes. The overall data allow the determination of the rate constants for all decay processes. From these, several conclusions are drawn. First, in solution, the main deactivation channels for the compounds are the radiationless processes: S(1) --> S(0) internal conversion and S(1) --> T(1) intersystem crossing. Second, in general, in the solid state, the fluorescence quantum yields decrease relative to solution. A comparison is made with the analogous linear alpha-oligothiophenes, revealing a lower fluorescence quantum efficiency and, in contrast to the normal oligothiophenes, that internal conversion is an important channel for the deactivation of the singlet excited state. Replacement of thiophene by 1,4-phenylene units in the longer-sized cruciform oligomer increases the fluorescence efficiency. The highly efficient generation of singlet oxygen through energy transfer from the triplet state (S(Delta) approximately 1) provides support for the measured intersystem crossing quantum yields and suggests that reaction with this may be an important pathway to consider for degradation of devices produced with these compounds.

Exploration of ground and excited electronic states of aromatic and quinoid S,S-dioxide terthiophenes. Complementary systems for enhanced electronic organic materials

We analyze the electronic and molecular structures for the ground and excited electronic states of aromatic terthiophene (3T), the quinodimethane 3',4'-dibutyl-5,5' '-bis(dicyanomethylene)-5,5' '-dihydro-2,2':5',2' '-terthiophene (3Q), and isologues with the middle ring S-oxidized (3TO2, 3QO2). These represent extremes of electron rich and deficient ground states, often exhibiting complementary properties. Oxidizing the central sulfur atom affects the molecular structure, electron affinity, and photophysical properties of both pi systems. The consequences for 3T include de-aromatization of the central thiophene, red-shifting of the electronic absorption spectrum, and lowering of the reduction potential. The electron deficient quinoid 3QO2 shows an enhancement of electron affinity from reducing the electron-donor ability of sulfur, and a blue-shifting of its electronic absorption spectrum was seen. Fluorescence emission is quenched in the sulfonated terthiophene, and the contrary effect again would be expected upon sulfonation of a quinoid emitter. Raman vibrational spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies are analyzed in conjunction with theoretical calculations.

Torsional effects on excitation energies of thiophene derivatives induced by β-substituents: Comparison between time-dependent density functional theory and approximated coupled cluster approaches

The influence of methyl or phenyl substitution in beta-position of dioxygenated terthiophene and diphenylthiophene on the optical properties is investigated by first-principles calculations. We compare the approximated singles and doubles coupled cluster (CC2) approach with time-dependent density functional theory methods. CC2 reproduces experimental excitation energies with an accuracy of 0.1 eV. We find that the different substituents modify the inter-ring torsional angle which in turn strongly influences the excitation energies. The steric contribution to the excitation energies have been separated from the total substituent effects.

Optical Properties of N-Succinimidyl Bithiophene and the Effects of the Binding to Biomolecules: Comparison between Coupled-Cluster and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations and Experiments

We report a joint theoretical-experimental study on the optical properties of 5-N-succinimidyl-2,2'-bithiophene (NS-2T), a prototype system for a new class of biomarkers. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and approximate coupled-cluster single and doubles (CC2) calculations are performed in the ground and excited states. Theoretical results are compared with absorption, photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL, and PL quantum efficiency measurements. The excited state of NS-2T has a larger dipole moment as compared to that of the ground state, explaining the experimental shift of the PL peak in solvents of different polarity, and a smaller intersystem crossing (ISC) rate as compared to that of isolated bithiophene (2T), explaining the increased PL quantum efficiency. We also studied two model systems to describe the effects of the covalent binding of NS-2T to biomolecules and proteins with the epsilon-NH(2) lysine groups. These model systems show optical properties closer to 2T, as the PL quantum efficiency is reduced due to the increased ISC rate. Theoretical calculations and experimental results show that covalent binding of NS-2T to a biomolecule will blue-shift the absorption but not the photoluminescence. CC2 and TD-DFT can very well describe the absorption and photoluminescence energies of all three systems, but the presence of several charge-transfer transitions in the TD-DFT spectrum of NS-2T required the use of a correlated method to validate the TD-DFT results.

Photophysical Studies of α,ω-Dicyano-oligothiophenes NC(C4H2S)nCN (n = 1−6)

The photophysics of six oligothiophenes end-capped with cyano groups (CNalphan) was investigated in solution at room and low temperature. The study comprises singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet absorption and emission spectra together with lifetimes and quantum yields for all the radiative and nonradiative processes. From the lifetimes and quantum yields, it was possible to extract the rate constants for all the processes. Singlet oxygen yields were also determined, revealing an efficient sensitization (SDelta approximately 1) of its formation by the triplet state of the CNalphan. The introduction of the cyano groups is found to decrease the energetic separation between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, leading to a red shift of the absorption and the emission when compared with the unsubstituted counterparts, the alpha-oligothiophenes. Phosphorescence is only observed for the first member of the series, CNalpha1.
