Abstract
In this work, we studied the reactions of three cyclic aliphatic alcohols with OH at room temperature, atmospheric pressure and different humidities in a Teflon reaction chamber. It was determined that the lower the solubility of the alcohol in water, the larger the effect of the humidity on the acceleration of the reaction. This experimental evidence allows suggesting that the acceleration is due to the reaction of the co-adsorbed reactants at the air-water interface of a thin water film deposited on the Teflon walls of the reaction chamber, instead of between co-reactants dissolved in the water film or due to gas phase catalysis as previously suggested. Therefore, formation of thin water films on different surfaces could have some implications on the tropospheric chemistry of these alcohols in the tropical regions of the planet with high humidity.

Abstract
Glycolaldehyde, HOCH2CHO, is an important multifunctional atmospheric trace gas formed in the oxidation of ethylene and isoprene and emitted directly from burning biomass. The initial step in the atmospheric photooxidation of HOCH2CHO yields HOCH2CO and HOCHCHO radicals; both of these radicals react rapidly with O2 in the troposphere. This study presents a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the HOCH2CO + O2 and HOCHCHO + O2 reactions using high-level quantum chemical calculations and energy-grained master equation simulations. The HOCH2CO + O2 reaction results in the formation of a HOCH2C(O)O2 radical, while the HOCHCHO + O2 reaction yields (HCO)2 + HO2. Density functional theory calculations have identified two open unimolecular pathways associated with the HOCH2C(O)O2 radical that yield HCOCOOH + OH or HCHO + CO2 + OH products; the former novel bimolecular product pathway has not been previously reported in the literature. Master equation simulations based on the potential energy surface calculated here for the HOCH2CO + O2 recombination reaction support experimental product yield data from the literature and indicate that, even at total pressures of 1 atm, the HOCH2CO + O2 reaction yields ∼11% OH at 298 K.

Abstract
The reaction of ethyl propyl ether (EnPE) with OH radicals was studied using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrum (PTR-MS), and the rate constant was measured at 298 K and atmospheric pressure using the relative rate method: kexp(OH+EnPE) = (1.13 ± 0.09) × 10-11 cm3 molecules-1 s-1. In addition, a parallel theoretical study was performed using the traditional transition state theory (TST) with a tunnelling effect correction in combination at M05-2X method with two basis sets, 6-311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVTZ. According to these calculations, H atom abstraction occurs more favorably from the methylene group adjacent to the -O- bond than from the other groups. The theoretical calculation of the total rate constant of the reaction of EnPE with OH radicals was consistent with the experimental values. The gas-phase products indicated that the major products observed were ethyl formate, ethyl propionate, propionic acid. Combined with the experimental and theoretical results, the possible reaction mechanisms were proposed and discussed. The atmospheric implications of the studied reaction are presented, and the lifetime of EnPE in the presence of OH radicals was evaluated to be approximately 1 day.

Abstract
In this work, we investigate the degradation process of 1-chlorobutane, initiated by OH radicals, under atmospheric conditions (air pressure of 750 Torr and 296 K) from both experimental and theoretical approaches. In the first one, a relative kinetic method was used to obtain the rate coefficient for this reaction, while the products were identified for the first time (1-chloro-2-butanone, 1-chloro-2-butanol, 4-chloro-2-butanone, 3-hydroxy-butanaldehyde, and 3-chloro-2-butanol) using mass spectrometry, allowing suggesting a reaction mechanism. The theoretical calculations, for the reactive process, were computed using the BHandHLYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory, and the energies for all of the stationary points were refined at the CCSD(T) level. Five conformers for 1-chlorobutane and 33 reactive channels with OH radicals were found, which were considered to calculate the thermal rate coefficient (as the sum of the site-specific rate coefficients using canonical transition state theory). The theoretical rate coefficient (1.8 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) is in good agreement with the experimental value (2.22 ± 0.50) × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 determined in this work. Finally, environmental impact indexes were calculated and a discussion on the atmospheric implications due to the emissions of this compound into the troposphere was given.

Abstract
The detailed decomposition mechanism of nitroglycerin (NG) in the gas phase was studied by examining reaction pathways using density functional theory (DFT) and canonical variational transition state theory combined with a small-curvature tunneling correction (CVT/SCT). The mechanism of NG autocatalytic decomposition was investigated at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. Five possible decomposition pathways involving NG were identified and the rate constants for the pathways at temperatures ranging from 200 to 1000 K were calculated using CVT/SCT. There was found to be a lower energy barrier to the β-H abstraction reaction than to the α-H abstraction reaction during the initial step in the autocatalytic decomposition of NG. The decomposition pathways for CHOCOCHONO2 (a product obtained following the abstraction of three H atoms from NG by NO2) include O-NO2 cleavage or isomer production, meaning that the autocatalytic decomposition of NG has two reaction pathways, both of which are exothermic. The rate constants for these two reaction pathways are greater than the rate constants for the three pathways corresponding to unimolecular NG decomposition. The overall process of NG decomposition can be divided into two stages based on the NO2 concentration, which affects the decomposition products and reactions. In the first stage, the reaction pathway corresponding to O-NO2 cleavage is the main pathway, but the rates of the two autocatalytic decomposition pathways increase with increasing NO2 concentration. However, when a threshold NO2 concentration is reached, the NG decomposition process enters its second stage, with the two pathways for NG autocatalytic decomposition becoming the main and secondary reaction pathways.

Abstract
This work reveals that though a single-water molecule decelerates the atmospheric reaction between the glycolaldehyde and OH radical, however, it facilitates the cis–trans interconversion along the hydrogen-abstraction pathways.

Abstract
The atmospheric oxidation mechanism of 4,4-dimethyl-1-pentene (DMP441) initiated by OH radical has been theoretically investigated at the BH&HLYP/6-311++G(d,p) and CCSD(T)/6-31+G(d,p) levels of theory. HC(O)H and 3,3-dimethylbutanal [(CH3)3CCH2C(O)H] are identified in our calculations as major products in the OH-radical-initiated degradation of DMP441 in the presence of O2. However, the epoxide conformers and enols are expected to be minor products because of the high isomerization barriers involved. The calculated results are in qualitative accordance with experimental evidence. Conventional transition state theory has been used to calculate the rate constants of the initial addition channels of the OH + DMP441 reaction over the temperature range 220-500 K. The computed total rate constant at 298 K is 2.20 × 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), which is in very good agreement with the experimental value. Furthermore, it has been found that the calculated rate constant exhibits a weak non-Arrhenius behavior over the temperature range 220-500 K. The computed expression for the rate constant is k(OH+DMP441) = 1.22 × 10(-12) exp[(880 K)/T] cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1).

Abstract
In the present study, the density functional method with recently developed M06 functionals has been used to study the reaction of CF3OCH2CH3 with the OH radical. All possible hydrogen abstraction and displacement reaction channels have been modeled. The minimum energy path on the respective potential energy surface and energetics were calculated at the M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Two different reaction mechanisms were considered: (i) reactant and product complexes called the complex mechanism and (ii) the direct mechanism (reactant → transition state → product). Tunneling corrections were made using the Eckart unsymmetrical potential. The overall rate constant calculated by the complex mechanism (keff = 1.8 × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1) has been found to be in good agreement with the experimentally determined value (1.5 ± 0.25 × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1), while the rate constant calculated by the direct mechanism (kD = 7.6 × 10−14 cm3 molecule−1 s−1) is about two times lower than the experimental value. The theoretical studies show that hydrogen atom abstraction from the –CH2– site is the most favorable reaction pathway and the reaction involves prereactive and product complexes before leading to stable product formation.

Abstract
A theoretical study is presented on the mechanism of OH reactions with three unsaturated aldehydes, relevant to atmospheric chemistry. Using acrolein as test molecule, several methods were tested in conjunction with the 6-311 ++ G(d,p) basis set. Based on the results from this study, the MPWB1K and M05-2X functionals were selected for the further study of acrolein, methacrolein and crotonaldehyde. All possible reaction channels have been modeled. Calculated overall rate coefficients at M05-2X/6-311 ++ G(d,p) are in excellent agreement with experimental data, supporting the proposed mechanisms. The previously proposed global mechanisms were confirmed, and specific mechanisms were identified. The causes of the mechanism for crotonaldehyde being different from the one of acrolein and methacrolein were clarified. The agreement between experiment and calculations validates the use of the chosen DFT methods for kinetic calculations, especially for large systems and cases in which spin contamination is an important issue.

Abstract
Conformational flexibility in the smallest hydrated sugar, the glycolaldehyde-water complex, has been investigated in the gas phase by means of a combination of a microwave Fourier transform spectroscopy experiment in a supersonic molecular beam and ab initio quantum chemistry calculations. The water molecule inserts into glycolaldehyde using H-bonding selectivity: the two lowest energy conformations are stabilized by two intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and the next two by one intra- plus one intermolecular hydrogen bond. A dynamical flexibility associated with the two lowest energy conformations has been experimentally observed and accurately modeled with a two-dimensional potential energy surface involving the hydroxyl group and the free OH water group coordinates. The conclusions drawn from the role played in the conformational flexibility by the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups are extended to other carbohydrates and biomolecules.

Abstract
A theoretical study of the mechanism and kinetics of the OH hydrogen abstraction from hydroxyacetone is presented. Optimum geometries and frequencies have been computed at the BH and HLYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory for all stationary points. Energy values have been improved by single-point calculations at the above geometries using CCSD(T)/ 6-311++G(d,p). The rate coefficients are calculated for the temperature range 280-500 K by using conventional transition state theory (TST), including tunneling corrections. Our analysis supports a stepwise mechanism involving the formation of a reactant complex in the entrance channel and a product complex in the exit channel, for all the modeled paths. Four experimental values of the rate constant at 298 K have been previously reported: three of them in great agreement (approximately 3 x 10(-12) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)), and one of them twice larger. The calculations in the present work support the smaller value. A curved Arrhenius plot was found in the studied temperature range; thus the expression that best describes the obtained data is k(280-500)(overall) = 5.29 x 10(-23)T(3.4)e(1623/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). The activation energy was found to vary with temperature from -1.33 to +0.15 kcal/mol.

Abstract
Both two and eighteen dimensional quantum diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations were used to study the isomers of hydroxyacetaldehyde. A total of four unique minima, and the transition states connecting them, were located. Both two and eighteen dimensional potential energy surfaces were generated and used in the DMC runs. The rotational constants for the global minimum were predicted for all experimentally identified isotopomers and an approximate equilibrium structure obtained by combining our theoretical results with the experimentally observed rotational constants. The results obtained for the remaining isomers indicate that not all of them can be isolated in the gas phase.
