Vibrational Population Relaxation of the −NCN− Antisymmetric Stretching Mode of Carbodiimide Studied by the Infrared Transient Grating Method

How do surrounding environments influence the electronic and vibrational properties of spheroidene?

Absorption and Raman spectra of spheroidene dissolved in various organic solvents and bound to peripheral light-harvesting LH2 complexes from photosynthetic purple bacteria Rhodobacter (Rba.) sphaeroides 2.4.1 were measured. The results showed that the peak energies of absorption and C-C and C=C stretching Raman lines are linearly proportional to the polarizability of solvents, as has already been reported. When comparing these results with those measured on LH2 complexes, it was confirmed that spheroidene is surrounded by a media with high polarizability. However, the change in the spectral width of the Raman lines, which reflect vibrational decay time, cannot be explained simply by a similar dependence of solvent polarizability. The experimental results were analyzed using a potential theoretical model. Consequently, a systematic change in the Raman line widths in the ground state can be satisfactorily explained as a function of the viscosity of the surrounding media. Even when the absorption peaks appear at the same energy, the vibrational decay time of spheroidene in the LH2 complexes is approximately 15-20 % slower than that in organic solvents.

Kinetics of exchange between zero-, one-, and two-hydrogen-bonded states of methyl and ethyl acetate in methanol

It has recently been shown that the ester carbonyl stretching vibration can be used as a sensitive probe of local electrostatic field in molecular systems. To further characterize this vibrational probe and extend its potential applications, we studied the kinetics of chemical exchange between differently hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) ester carbonyl groups of methyl acetate (MA) and ethyl acetate (EA) in methanol. We found that, while both MA and EA can form zero, one, or two H-bonds with the solvent, the population of the 2hb state in MA is significantly smaller than that in EA. Using a combination of linear and nonlinear infrared measurements and numerical simulations, we further determined the rate constants for the exchange between these differently H-bonded states. We found that for MA the chemical exchange reaction between the two dominant states (i.e., 0hb and 1hb states) has a relaxation rate constant of 0.14 ps(-1), whereas for EA the three-state chemical exchange reaction occurs in a predominantly sequential manner with the following relaxation rate constants: 0.11 ps(-1) for exchange between 0hb and 1hb states and 0.12 ps(-1) for exchange between 1hb and 2hb states.

Examination of enzymatic H-tunneling through kinetics and dynamics

In recent years, kinetic measurements of isotope effects of enzyme-catalyzed reactions and their temperature dependence led to the development of theoretical models that were used to rationalize the findings. These models suggested that motions at the femto- to picosecond (fs to ps) time scale modulate the environment of the catalyzed reaction. Due to the fast nature of motions that directly affect the cleavage of a covalent bond, it is challenging to correlate the enzyme kinetics and dynamics related to that step. We report a study of formate dehydrogenase (FDH) that compares the temperature dependence of intrinsic kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) to measurements of the environmental dynamics at the fs-ps time scale (Bandaria et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 22-23). The findings from this comparison of experimental kinetics and dynamics are consistent with models of environmentally coupled H-tunneling models, also known as Marcus-like models. Apparently, at tunneling ready conformations, the donor-acceptor distance, orientation, and fluctuations seems to be well tuned for H-transfer and are not affected by thermal fluctuations slower than 10 ps. This phenomenon has been suggested in the past to be quite general in enzymatic reactions. Here, the kinetics and the dynamics measurements on a single chemical step and on fs-ps time scale, respectively, provide new insight and support for the relevant theoretical models. Furthermore, this methodology could be applied to other systems and be used to examine mutants for which the organization of the donor and acceptor is not ideal, or enzymes with different rigidity and different temperature optimum.

Vibrational relaxation of C-D stretching vibrations in CDCl3, CDBr3, and CDI3

We present time-resolved transient grating measurements of the vibrational relaxation rates of the C-D stretching vibrations of deuterated haloforms in benzene and acetone. We compare our results with previous measurements of excited C-H stretches in the same solvents to obtain insight into the solvent effect on the vibrational relaxation. In deuterated molecules, there are more low-order-coupled states and the states are closer in energy to the C-D stretch than in the unlabeled isotopologs. Therefore, the relaxation is faster for the deuterated molecules. The relaxation also shows a significant solvent dependence. Bromoform and iodoform form charge-transfer complexes with both benzene and acetone which enhance the relaxation rate. For chloroform, hydrogen bonding to acetone is expected to be a more favorable interaction. Surprisingly, however, the vibrational relaxation of CDCl(3) is slower in acetone than in benzene.

Ultrafast Excited-State Excitation Dynamics in a Quasi-Two-Dimensional Light-Harvesting Antenna Based on Ruthenium(II) and Palladium(II) Chromophores

A detailed study on the excited-state-excitation migration taking place within the tetranuclear complex [{(tbbpy)(2)Ru(tmbi)}(2){Pd(allyl)}(2)](PF(6))(2) (tbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine and tmbi = 5,6,5',6'-tetramethyl-2,2'-bibenzimidazolate) is presented. The charge transfer is initiated by the photoexcitation into the lowest metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) band of one of the peripheral ruthenium(II) chromophores and terminates on the central structurally complex Pd(2) (II)(allyl)(2) subunit. Thus, the system under investigation can be thought of as a functional model for the photosynthesis reaction center in plants. The kinetic steps involved in the overall process are inferred from femtosecond time-resolved transient-grating kinetics recorded at spectral positions within the regions of ground-state bleach and transient absorption. The kinetics features a complex non-exponential time behavior and can be fitted to a bi-exponential rise (tau(1)> or =200 fs, tau(2) approximately 1.5 ps) and a mono- or bi-exponential decay, depending on the experimental situation. The data leads to the formulation of a model for the intramolecular excitation-hopping ascribing intersystem crossing and subsequent cooling as the two fastest observed processes. Following these initial steps, charge transfer from the ruthenium to the central complex Pd(2)(allyl)(2) moiety is observed with a characteristic time constant of 50 ps. A 220-ps component that is observed in the ground-state recovery only is attributed to excitation equilibration between the two identical Pd(allyl) chromophores.
