Abstract
The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction of 4'-N,N,-diethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (C2HF) was studied using time-resolved fluorescence measurements in ionic liquids (ILs) of various anions with a fixed cation (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium [C2mim]+). C2HF showed an ESIPT reaction from the normal excited state (N*; keto form) to the tautomer excited state (T*; enol form) where both states are emissive. The ESIPT rate and yield were obtained by analyzing the time-resolved fluorescence spectra measured using the optical Kerr gate method. Both the ESIPT rate and yield decreased with increasing hydrogen-bond accepting ability of the anion. According to density functional theory calculations, the complex formation energy between C2HF and the anion became significantly negative with increasing the hydrogen-bond accepting ability of anion. The pseudoequilibrium constant between N* and T* ([T*]/[N*]) in the electronic excited state decreased with increasing hydrogen-bond accepting ability of the anion, while it increased with increasing the alkyl-chain length of alkyl sulfonate. The excitation wavelength dependence of the ESIPT rate and yield was studied for C2HF in [C2mim][C6H13SO3]. The ESIPT yield decreased by nearly a factor of 2 with increasing excitation wavelength from 360 to 425 nm, although the change in the ESIPT rate was small. The solvation heterogeneity due to the alkyl chain in the anion was considered to be the reason for the excitation wavelength dependence.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs), which are used as solvents for chemical reactions, are different from conventional organic solvents owing to their designability. Physicochemical parameters of the ILs, such as polarity and viscosity, that affect chemical equilibria and reaction kinetics can be tuned by changing the combination of anions and cations or by varying the lengths of the alkyl chains present in the cations. We were interested in knowing how these physicochemical parameters affect fundamental chemical reactions in ILs. Therefore, in this personal account, we investigate our recent work on two different photochemical reactions in ILs, namely excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of hydroxyflavone and photodissociation of aminodisulfide, using time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Interestingly, the roles of the ILs in these chemical reactions are quite different. The effect of the cationic species of the ILs (i. e., the head groups and number of alkyl carbons) on the solvation environment upon photoexcitation and reaction rate are discussed.

Abstract
The organization of biomolecules and bioassemblies is highly governed by the nature and extent of their interactions with water. These interactions are of high intricacy and a broad range of methods based on various principles have been introduced to characterize them. As these methods view the hydration phenomena differently (e.g., in terms of time and length scales), a detailed insight in each particular technique is to promote the overall understanding of the stunning “hydration world.” In this prospective mini-review we therefore critically examine time-dependent fluorescence shift (TDFS)—an experimental method with a high potential for studying the hydration in the biological systems. We demonstrate that TDFS is very useful especially for phospholipid bilayers for mapping the interfacial region formed by the hydrated lipid headgroups. TDFS, when properly applied, reports on the degree of hydration and mobility of the hydrated phospholipid segments in the close vicinity of the fluorophore embedded in the bilayer. Here, the interpretation of the recorded TDFS parameters are thoroughly discussed, also in the context of the findings obtained by other experimental techniques addressing the hydration phenomena (e.g., molecular dynamics simulations, NMR spectroscopy, scattering techniques, etc.). The differences in the interpretations of TDFS outputs between phospholipid biomembranes and proteins are also addressed. Additionally, prerequisites for the successful TDFS application are presented (i.e., the proper choice of fluorescence dye for TDFS studies, and TDFS instrumentation). Finally, the effects of ions and oxidized phospholipids on the bilayer organization and headgroup packing viewed from TDFS perspective are presented as application examples.

Abstract
Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence were used to investigate the solvation of coumarin 153 (C153) and coumarin 343 (C343) in methanol + ethaline binary solutions, a deep eutectic solvent composed of a 1:2 molar ratio choline chloride + ethylene glycol. In addition, time-resolved anisotropy decays were used to determine the solute's rotational reorientation time as a function of viscosity. Measurements were made in solutions covering the entire range of mole fraction. Viscosity measurements were used to characterize the bulk solvent properties, and as expected, addition of methanol resulted in an decreased viscosity, showing an exponential decrease with mole fraction, up to ∼50-fold at xMeOH = 1.0. Probe rotational reorientation times were found to be biexponential at xMeOH < 0.3 for C153 and xMeOH < 0.5 for C343 and monoexponential at richer methanol content. In proportion to viscosity, C153 and C343 average rotation times decreased ∼30-fold from xMeOH = 0 to 0.9 and showed a power law dependence of ∼η0.85. Rotation times approached the stick boundary limit on dilution with methanol. Time-resolved Stokes shifts quantified the solvation dynamics and were nearly single exponential for C153 but were clearly biexponential for C343. Solvation times also tracked with viscosity according to a power law dependence, with exponents of 0.3 and 0.4 for C153 and C343, respectively. The dilution effect of methanol was not linear in proportion to the viscosity change and alone cannot account for the change in solvation. Dilution also showed a different correlation to solvation than did temperature variations to govern the viscosity change.

Abstract
Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to study a solution comprised of coumarin 153 (C153)+ trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([P6,6,6,14]+ [Tf2N]−)+ supercritical CO2 (scCO2). We compare the spectroscopy of C153 in neat scCO2 to that of C153/scCO2 with the addition of ionic liquid (IL). Excitation and emission peak frequencies of C153 in scCO2 and in IL/scCO2 diverged at reduced densities (ρr = ρ/ρc) below the CO2 critical density. At low fluid density, spectral changes in the IL/scCO2 solutions showed evidence that C153 experiences a very different microenvironment—one that is unlike neat scCO2. The data show that the presence of IL clearly influences the C153 excitation and emission profiles. Excitation was broadened and red shifted by >2000 cm−1 and the presence of an additional low-energy emission component that was red shifted by ~3000 cm−1 was clearly visible and not observed in neat scCO2. The solution heterogeneity was controlled by changing the scCO2 density and at high fluid density, both the excitation and emission spectra were more similar to those in neat scCO2. Steady-state anisotropy also showed that at low fluid density, the C153 emission was significantly polarized. Aggregation of C153 has been reported in the literature and this led us to hypothesize the possibility that C153 dimer (aggregation) formation may be occurring in scCO2. Another possible explanation is that dye–IL aggregates may dissolve into the scCO2 phase due to C153 acting as a “co-solvent” for the IL. Time-resolved intensity decay measurements yielded only slightly non-exponential decays with accompanying time constants of ~3–4 ns that were significantly shorter than the 5–6 ns time constants in neat scCO2, which are suggestive of C153–IL interactions. However, these data did not conclusively support dimer formation. Pre-exponential factors of the time constants showed that almost all of the emission was due to monomeric C153.

Abstract
Dynamic Stokes shift measurements report on structural relaxation, driven by a dipole created in a chromophore by its excitation from the ground electronic state to the S1 state. Here, we demonstrate that it is also possible to have an additional contribution from orientational relaxation of the Stokes shift chromophore. This effect, called reorientation-induced Stokes shift (RISS), can be observed when the reorientation of the chromophore and the solvent structural relaxation occur on similar time scales. Through a vector interaction, the electronic transition of the chromophore couples to its environment. The orientational diffusive motions of the chromophores will have a slight bias toward reducing the transition energy (red shift) as do the solvent structural diffusive motions. RISS is manifested in the polarization-dependence of the fluorescence Stokes shift using coumarin 153 (C153) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). A similar phenomenon, reorientation-induced spectral diffusion (RISD), has been observed and theoretically explicated in the context of two dimensional infrared (2D IR) experiments. Here, we generalize the existing RISD theory to include properties of electronic transitions that generally are not present in vibrational transitions. Expressions are derived that permit determination of the structural dynamics by accounting for the RISS contributions. Using these generalized equations, the structural dynamics of the medium can be measured for any system in which the directional interaction is well represented by a first order Stark effect and RISS or RISD is observed. The theoretical results are applied to the PMMA data, and the structural dynamics are obtained and discussed.

Abstract
In principle, ionic liquids (ILs) can serve as stable and less harmful high-refractive-index liquids (n>1.60). However, detailed information on their complex refractive indices and dispersions is rare. Therefore, we determined the optical constants of six commercially available low-index ILs (n ca. 1.4) and two high-index ILs (n max. 2.38) synthesized by us utilizing spectroscopic ellipsometry. Furthermore, we tested the ILs as immersion liquids for different photonic crystals. Analysis of the optical properties of these photonic crystals after infiltration demonstrates potential applications of ILs in optofluidics and as index-matching liquids.

Abstract
In recent years, interest in carbon capture and sequestration has led to numerous investigations of the ability of ionic liquids to act as recyclable CO2-sorbent materials. Herein, we investigate the structure and dynamics of a model physisorbing ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4C1Im][PF6]), from the perspective of CO2 using two-dimensional (2D) IR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. A direct comparison of experimentally measured and calculated 2D IR line shapes confirms the validity of the simulations and spectroscopic calculations. Taken together, the simulations and experiments reveal new insights into the interactions of a CO2 solute with the surrounding ionic liquid and how these interactions manifest in the 2D IR spectra. In particular, higher CO2 asymmetric stretch vibrational frequencies are associated with softer, less populated solvent cages and lower frequencies are associated with tighter, more highly populated solvent cages. The CO2 interacts most strongly with the anions, and these interactions persist for more than 1 ns. The second strongest interactions are with the imidazolium cation ring that last 100 ps, and the weakest interactions are with the cation butyl tail that persist for 10 ps. The principal contributors to spectral diffusion of the CO2 asymmetric stretch vibrational frequency due to the dynamical evolution of the solvent are through Lennard-Jones interactions at short times and electrostatics at long times.

Abstract
Modulating the heterogeneous microenvironment in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) by external stimuli is an important approach for understanding and designing external field-induced chemical reactions in natural and applied systems. Here, we report for the first time the redistribution of oxygen molecules related to microstructure changes in RTILs induced by an external laser field, which is probed simultaneously by the triplet-state dynamics of porphyrin. A remarkably long-lived triplet state of porphyrin is observed with changes of microstructures after irradiation, suggesting that charge-shifted O2 molecules are induced by the external field and/or rearranged intrinsic ions move from nonpolar domains into the polar domains of RTILs through electrostatic interactions. The results suggest that heterogeneous systems like ionic liquids in the presence of external stimuli can be designed for reaction systems associated with not only O2 but also for CO2 , CS2 , etc. and many other similar solvent molecules for many promising applications.

Abstract
Quaternary organophosphonium salts bearing long alkyl chains are cationic surfactants of interest owing to their physical and biological properties. In the present work, the crystal structure and thermotropic behavior of the homologous series of alkyltrimethylphosphonium bromides (nATMP·Br), with the alkyl chain containing an even number (n) of carbon atoms from 12 to 22, have been examined within the 0-300 °C range of temperatures. These compounds were shown to be resistant to heat up to ∼390 °C. The phases adopted at different temperatures were detected by DSC, and the structural changes involved in the phase transitions have been characterized by simultaneous WAXS and SAXS carried out in real-time, and by polarizing optical microscopy as well. Three or four phases were identified for n = 12 and 14 or n ≥ 16, respectively, in agreement with the heat exchange peaks observed by DSC. The phase existing at room temperature (Ph-I) was found to be fully crystalline and its crystal lattice was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Ph-II consisted of a semicrystalline structure that can be categorized as Smectic-B with the crystallized ionic pairs hexagonally arranged in layers and the molten alkyl chain confined in the interlayer space. Ph-II of 12ATMP·Br and 14ATMP·Br directly isotropicized upon heating at ∼220 °C, whereas for n ≥ 16, it converted into a Smectic-A phase (Ph-III) that needed to be heated above ∼240 °C to become isotropic (Ph-Is). The correlation existing between the thermal behavior, phase structure and length of the alkyl side chain has been demonstrated.

Abstract
Steady state, time-resolved fluorescence and NMR experiments are carried out to gain deeper insights into the structure-property correlation in structurally similar monocationic and dicationic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence response of fluorophore in 1-methy-3-propyllimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C3MIm][NTf2] is found to be different from that of 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6MIm][NTf2]. The outcomes of the present solvent dynamics study in [C3MIm][NTf2] when compared with those in [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and in [C6MIm][NTf2] from our previous studies (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2014, 16, 12918-12928) indicate the involvement of dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation during solvation. To correlate the findings of solvation dynamics study with the dipolar rotation of the imidazolium ring, pulsed-field gradient (PFG)-NMR technique for translational diffusion coefficient measurement and (1)H as well as (19)F spin-lattice relaxation measurements are employed. NMR investigation reveals that an ultrafast component of solvation can be related to the dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation; hence, the role of dipolar rotation of cations in governing the dynamics of solvation in ILs cannot be ignored. Analysis of the rotational relaxation dynamics data by the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory unveils distinctive features of solute-solvent interaction in [C3MIm][NTf2] and [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2.

Abstract
Ionic liquids having a sufficiently amphiphilic cation can dissolve large volume fractions of alkanes, leading to mixtures with intriguing properties on molecular length scales. The trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium cation paired with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide anion provides an ionic liquid that can dissolve large mole fractions of hexane. We present experimental results on mixtures of n-C6D14 with this ionic liquid. High-energy X-ray scattering studies reveal a persistence of the characteristic features of ionic liquid structure even for 80% dilution with n-C6D14. Nuclear magnetic resonance self-diffusion results reveal decidedly non-hydrodynamic behavior where the self-diffusion of the neutral, non-polar n-C6D14 is on average a factor of 21 times faster than for the cation. Exploitation of the unique structural and transport properties of these mixtures may lead to new opportunities for designer solvents for enhanced chemical reactivity and interface science.

Abstract
We have studied the photophysics and rotational diffusion of hydrophilic solute 7-(N, N'-diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA) in a room temperature ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([N1888 ][NTf2 ]). Comparison of activation energies of viscous flow and nonradiative decay shows that the photophysical properties of 7-DCCA are not guided by the bulk viscosity of the medium but are dependent on the specific solute solvent interaction and structural heterogeneity of the medium. The rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA in [N1888 ][NTf2] shows significant deviation from the Stokes Einstein Debye hydrodynamic model of rotational diffusion. This is indicative of the influence of specific solute solvent interaction on the rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA. Comparison of activation energy of rotational relaxation with activation energy of viscous flow clearly reinforces our assumption that the structural heterogeneity of the medium and specific solute solvent interaction plays a dominant role on the rotational diffusion instead of bulk viscosity.

Abstract
Rotational diffusion of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), has been examined in ethylammonium nitrate-lithium nitrate (EAN-LiNO3) mixtures to understand the influence of added electrolyte on the local environment experienced by the solute molecules. The measured reorientation times of both DMDPP and DPP in EAN-LiNO3 mixtures fall within the broad limits set by the hydrodynamic slip and stick boundary conditions. The hydrogen bond accepting DMDPP and the hydrogen bond donating DPP experience specific interactions with the cation and anion of the ionic liquid, respectively. Addition of LiNO3 (0.1 and 0.2 mole fraction) to EAN induces only viscosity related effects on the rotational diffusion of the two nondipolar solutes. These observations suggest that the local environment experienced by DMDPP and DPP in EAN is not altered upon the addition of LiNO3. Our results are consistent with the structural details available in the literature for EAN-LiNO3 mixtures.

Abstract
In polymers, the rotation of a small solute is nonexponential. Either heterogeneity in the local friction or local anisotropy-a homogeneous process-may be responsible. A new, two-dimensional anisotropy experiment is demonstrated on this problem. In poly(dimethylsiloxane), the rotation of individual solute molecules is found to be exponential, and the observed rate dispersion is primarily due to variation in the local friction. This sample is far from its glass transition. Studies of rate heterogeneity associated with the glass transition must account for the contribution from this polymer-related mechanism.
