Abstract
Hydrogen-atom tunneling leading to spontaneous tautomeric conversion in monomeric heterocyclic molecules without intramolecular hydrogen bonds has been experimentally detected for the first time. For monomers of 2-thiouracil, 6-aza-2-thiouracil and 1-methyl-2-thiouracil isolated in low-temperature matrices, higher-energy thiol forms were generated upon UV (λ = 305 nm) excitation of the most stable thione tautomers. When the matrices were subsequently kept in the dark and at low temperature, hydrogen-atom tunneling occurred, leading to the thiol → thione conversion. During this process, the photoproduced thiol form spontaneously converted into the lowest energy thione tautomer.

Abstract
Exploration of the photolytic dynamics of sulfurous compounds is essential, eventually contributing not only to our comprehension of their fundamental organic chemistry but also shedding light on astrophysical implications. This study aims to investigate two astrochemically relevant sulfur-containing molecules, namely, thiourea (TU) and its N-methylated counterpart, N-methyl thiourea (NMTU), in cryogenic matrices. These molecules were deposited both in solid Ar and in a quantum host, specifically in solid para-H2 matrices, with the latter exhibiting unique properties. The deposited matrices were exposed to a series of UV laser irradiation at various wavelengths to investigate the decomposition paths of TU and NMTU. As a result of the UV photolysis, a plethora of degradation products could be observed in every case. Based on the presence of these product molecules, some considerations can be made regarding the decomposition mechanism of the parent molecules. The use of different matrices allowed for assessing their influence on the decay mechanism, while applying tunable laser light provided insights into the wavelength dependency of the processes.

Abstract
Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and energy transfer between amino acids and bioquinones have become research hotspots, due to the important roles they play in a physiological environment. However, as classic benzoquinones and amino acids, the reaction mechanism of p-benzoquinone (PBQ) and tryptophan (Trp) is still unclear. In this work, the photoinduced chemical reaction of PBQ and Trp was investigated in homogeneous solution using time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance and laser flash photolysis techniques. Under photoexcitation at 355 nm, the 3PBQ* produced via intersystem crossing (ISC) in ethylene glycol aqueous (EG-H2O) solution followed by the H-atom transfer (HAT) from EG to 3PBQ* was a significant process in competition with the non-radiative transition of 3PBQ*, which was clearly observed in the transient absorption spectra and chemically induced dynamic electron polarization spectra. When Trp was added into the PBQ/EG-H2O solution, a new decay channel of 3PBQ* was produced that reacted with Trp to form a p-benzoquinone anion radical (PBQ˙-) and a tryptophan cationic radical (Trp˙+), indicating that the photoinduced chemical reaction mechanism was the electron transfer. By fitting the decay dynamic curves, the quenching rate constant of 3PBQ* to Trp in homogeneous solution was determined as 6.8 × 108 M-1 s-1, which was close to the diffusion-controlled rate.

Abstract
The dynamics of low energy electron attachment to the thio-substituted uracil analog 2-thiouracil are investigated using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) of iodide·2-thiouracil (I -·2TU) binary clusters. In these experiments, the anions are excited at pump energies of 4.16 and 4.73 eV, and the ensuing dynamics are probed by photodetachment at 1.59 and 3.18 eV. Upon excitation near the vertical detachment energy (4.16 eV), dipole bound (DB) and valence bound (VB) anion signals appear almost instantaneously, and the DB state of the 2TU anion undergoes ultrafast decay (~50 fs). At 4.73 eV, there is no evidence for a DB state, but features attributed to two VB states are seen. The transient negative ions formed by photoexcitation decay by autodetachment and I- fragmentation. The I- dissociation rates and their dependence on excitation energy agree reasonably well with the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus calculations. Notable differences with respect to TRPES of the related iodide-uracil anion are observed and discussed.

Abstract
Selenium nucleic acids possess unique properties and have been demonstrated to have a wide range of applications such as in DNA X-ray crystallography and novel medical therapies. However, as a heavy atom, selenium substitution may easily alter the photophysical properties of a nucleic acid by red-shifting the absorption spectra and introducing effective intersystem crossing to triplet excited states. In present work, the excited state dynamics of a naturally occurring selenium substituted uracil (2-selenuracil, 2SeU) is studied by using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy as well as quantum chemistry calculations. Ultrafast intersystem crossing to the lowest triplet state (T1) and effective non-radiative decay of this state to the ground state (S0) are demonstrated in the neutral form 2SeU. However, the triplet lifetime of the deprotonated form 2SeU is found to be almost one order of magnitude longer than that in the neutral one. Quantum chemistry calculations indicate that the short triplet lifetime in 2SeU is due to excited state population decay through a crossing point between T1 and S0. In the deprotonated form, shortening the N1-C2 bond length makes the structural distortion more difficult and brings a larger energy barrier on the pathway to the T1/S0 crossing point, resulting in one order of magnitude increase of the triplet state lifetime. Our study reveals one key factor to regulate the triplet lifetime of 2SeU and sets the stage to further investigate the photophysical and photochemical properties of 2SeU-containing DNA/RNA duplexes.

Abstract

To shed more light
on the mechanisms of UV-induced hydrogen-atom-transfer
processes in heterocyclic molecules, phototautomeric thione →
thiol reactions were investigated for thione compounds isolated in
low-temperature Ar as well as in n-H2 (normal hydrogen)
matrices. These studies concerned thione compounds with a five-membered
heterocyclic ring and thione compounds with a six-membered heterocyclic
ring. The experimental investigation of 2-thioimidazole and 3-thio-1,2,4-triazole
(thione compounds with a five-membered heterocyclic ring) revealed
that for the compounds isolated in solid n-H2 only trace
amounts of thiol photoproducts were photogenerated; even though for
the same compounds isolated in the solid Ar matrix, the thione → thiol photoconversion
was nearly
total. In contrast to that, for 3-thiopyridazine and 2-thioquinoline
(thione compounds with a six-membered heterocyclic
ring) isolated in solid n-H2, the UV-induced thione →
thiol conversion occurred with the yield reaching 25–50% of
the yield of the analogous process observed for the same species isolated
in solid Ar. The obtained experimental results allow us to conclude
that the dissociation–association mechanism nearly exclusively
governs the phototransformation in thione heterocycles with high barriers
for tautomerization (such as thione compounds with a five-membered
ring), whereas the strictly intramolecular hydrogen-atom shift contributes
to the mechanism of hydrogen-atom transfer in thione heterocycles
with lower barriers (such as thione compounds with a six-membered
ring).

Abstract
Recent developments of low-temperature techniques are providing valuable knowledge about chemical processes that manifest in the quantum regimen. The tunneling effect from the vibrational ground-state is the main mechanism of these reactions, which usually involves the motion or transfer of hydrogen atoms. Theoretical methods can enrich the information supplied by these experimental methods through an insightful analysis of the tunneling process. In this context, canonical variational transition state theory with multidimensional tunneling corrections (CVT/MT) can handle this type of reaction, and it has been applied to several systems within the small-curvature approximation for tunneling (SCT). This method is of proven reliability for polyatomic reactions occurring at room temperature and above, but no tests have been performed to check its performance when only the lowest energy level is populated. In this work, we compare SCT against the least-action tunneling (LAT) method to study the tautomerization and cis-trans interconversion reactions in the enol forms of urea, thiourea, and selenourea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the LAT method is applied to a polyatomic reaction occurring in the deep-tunneling region. The theoretical results indicate that the reaction mechanisms are controlled by tunneling. The SCT and LAT tautomerization reaction times are in good agreement with the experimental values; however, LAT seems superior to SCT for reactions (tautomerizations) that involve moderate reaction path curvature, whereas the opposite is true for reactions with small curvature (interconversions). These results led us to introduce and recommend the microcanonically optimized tunneling path that selects the tunneling probability as the maximum between the SCT and LAT tunneling probabilities.

Abstract
The photophysics of selenium-substituted nucleobases has attracted recent experimental attention because they could serve as potential photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy. Herein, we present a comprehensive MS-CASPT2 study on the spectroscopic and excited-state properties, and photophysics of 2-selenouracil (2SeU), 4-selenouracil (4SeU), and 2,4-selenouracil (24SeU). Relevant minima, conical intersections, crossing points, and excited-state relaxation paths in the lowest five electronic states (i.e., S0, S1, S2, T2, and T1) are explored. On the basis of these results, their photophysical mechanisms are proposed. Upon photoirradiation to the bright S2 state, 2SeU quickly relaxes to its S2 minimum and then moves in an essentially barrierless way to a nearby S2/S1 conical intersection near which the S1 state is populated. Next, the S1 system arrives at an S1/T2/T1 intersection where a large S1/T1 spin-orbit coupling of 430.8 cm-1 makes the T1 state populated. In this state, a barrier of 6.8 kcal mol-1 will trap 2SeU for a while. In parallel, for 4SeU or 24SeU, the system first relaxes to the S2 minimum and then overcomes a small barrier to approach an S2/S1 conical intersection. Once hopping to the S1 state, there exists an extended region with very close S1, T2, and T1 energies. Similarly, a large S1/T1 spin-orbit coupling of 426.8 cm-1 drives the S1→ T1 intersystem crossing process thereby making the T1 state populated. Similarly, an energy barrier heavily suppresses electronic transition to the S0 state. The present work manifests that different selenium substitutions on uracil can lead to a certain extent of different vertical and adiabatic excitation energies, excited-state properties, and relaxation pathways. These insights could help understand the photophysics of selenium-substituted nucleobases.

Abstract
We report an implementation for employing the algebraic diagrammatic construction to second order [ADC(2)] ab initio electronic structure level of theory in nonadiabatic dynamics simulations in the framework of the SHARC (surface hopping including arbitrary couplings) dynamics method. The implementation is intended to enable computationally efficient, reliable, and easy-to-use nonadiabatic dynamics simulations of intersystem crossing in organic molecules. The methodology is evaluated for the 2-thiouracil molecule. It is shown that ADC(2) yields reliable excited-state energies, wave functions, and spin-orbit coupling terms for this molecule. Dynamics simulations are compared to previously reported results using high-level multi-state complete active space perturbation theory, showing favorable agreement.

Abstract
The photodynamic properties of molecules determine their ability to survive in harsh radiation environments. As such, the photostability of heterocyclic aromatic compounds to electromagnetic radiation is expected to have been one of the selection pressures influencing the prebiotic chemistry on early Earth. In the present study, the gas-phase photodynamics of uracil, 5-methyluracil (thymine) and 2-thiouracil-three heterocyclic compounds thought to be present during this era-are assessed in the context of their recently proposed intersystem crossing pathways that compete with internal conversion to the ground state. Specifically, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements evidence femtosecond to picosecond timescales for relaxation of the singlet (1)ππ* and (1)nπ* states as well as for intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold. Trapping in the excited triplet state and intersystem crossing back to the ground state are investigated as potential factors contributing to the susceptibility of these molecules to ultraviolet photodamage.

The computationally predicted presence of two structurally distinct minima in the first triplet excited (T1) state of 2-thiouracil (2TU) is substantiated by sub-picosecond transient vibrational absorption spectroscopy (TVAS) in deuterated acetonitrile solution. Following 300 nm ultraviolet excitation to the second singlet excited state of 2TU, a transient infrared absorption band centered at 1643 cm-1 is observed within our minimum time resolution of 0.3 ps. It is assigned either to 2TU molecules in the S1 state or to vibrationally hot T1-state molecules, with the latter assignment more consistent with recent computational and experimental studies. The 1643 cm-1 band decays with a time constant of 7.2 ± 0.8 ps, and there is corresponding growth of several further bands centered at 1234, 1410, 1424, 1443, 1511, 1626, and 1660 cm-1 which show no decline in intensity over the 1 ns time limit of our measurements. These spectral features are assigned to two different conformations of 2TU, corresponding to separate energy minima on the T1-state potential energy surface, on the basis of their extended lifetimes, computed infrared frequencies, and the observed quenching of the bands by addition of styrene. Corresponding measurements for the 4-thiouracil (4TU) isomer show sub-picosecond population of the T1 state, which vibrationally cools with a time constant of 5.2 ± 0.6 ps. However, TVAS measurements in the carbonyl stretching region do not distinguish the two computed T1-state conformers of 4TU because of the similarity of their vibrational frequencies.

Abstract
Ground- and excited-state UV photoelectron spectra of thiouracils (2-thiouracil, 4-thiouracil, and 2,4-dithiouracil) have been simulated using multireference configuration interaction calculations and Dyson norms as a measure for the photoionization intensity. Except for a constant shift, the calculated spectrum of 2-thiouracil agrees very well with experiment, while no experimental spectra are available for the two other compounds. For all three molecules, the photoelectron spectra show distinct bands due to ionization of the sulphur and oxygen lone pairs and the pyrimidine π system. The excited-state photoelectron spectra of 2-thiouracil show bands at much lower energies than in the ground state spectrum, allowing to monitor the excited-state population in time-resolved UV photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. However, the results also reveal that single-photon ionization probe schemes alone will not allow monitoring all photodynamic processes existing in 2-thiouracil. Especially, due to overlapping bands of singlet and triplet states the clear observation of intersystem crossing will be hampered.

Abstract
Accurate excited-state quantum chemical calculations on 2-thiouracil, employing large active spaces and up to quadruple-ζ quality basis sets in multistate complete active space perturbation theory calculations, are reported. The results suggest that the main relaxation path for 2-thiouracil after photoexcitation should be S2 → S1 → T2 → T1, and that this relaxation occurs on a subpicosecond time scale. There are two deactivation pathways from the initially excited bright S2 state to S1, one of which is nearly barrierless and should promote ultrafast internal conversion. After relaxation to the S1 minimum, small singlet-triplet energy gaps and spin-orbit couplings of about 130 cm(-1) are expected to facilitate intersystem crossing to T2, from where very fast internal conversion to T1 occurs. An important finding is that 2-thiouracil shows strong pyramidalization at the carbon atom of the thiocarbonyl group in several excited states.

Abstract
The CC2 (second order approximate coupled cluster method) has been applied to investigate protonation effect on electronic transition energies of 2-pyridone (2PY), 2-pyridone dimer, and micro-solvated 2-pyridone (0-2 water molecules). The PE profiles of protonated 2-pyridone (2PYH(+)) as well as monohydrated 2PYH(+) at the different electronic states have been investigated. The (1)πσ∗ state in protonated species (2PYH(+)) is a barrier free and dissociative state along the O-H stretching coordinate. In this reaction coordinate, the lowest lying (1)πσ∗ predissociates the bound S1((1)ππ∗) state, connecting the latter to a conical intersection with the S0 state. These conical intersections lead the (1)ππ∗ state to proceed as predissociative state and finally direct the excited system to the ground state. Furthermore, in presence of water molecule, the (1)πσ∗ state still remains dissociative but the conical intersection between (1)πσ∗ and ground state disappears. In addition, according to the CC2 calculation results, it has been predicted that protonation significantly blue shifts the S1-S0 electronic transition of monomer, dimer, and microhydrated 2-pyridone.

Abstract
Matrix isolation is a powerful tool for studying photochemical processes occurring in isolated molecules. In this way, we characterized the chemical modifications occurring within a tri peptide molecule, IGF, when exposed to the influence of Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. This paper first describes the successful formation of the tripeptide (IGF) argon matrix under vacuum conditions, followed by the in situ UV irradiation and characterization of the molecular matrix reactivity after UV-irradiation. These studies have been performed by combining two complementary spectroscopic techniques, Fourier-Transform Reflexion Absorption Spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The IR spectra of the isolated peptide-matrix, before and after UV irradiation, revealed significant differences that could be associated either to a partial deprotonation of the molecule or to a tautomeric conversion of some amide bonds to imide ones on some peptide molecules. XPS analyses undoubtedly confirmed the second hypothesis; the combination of IRRAS and XPS results provide evidence that UV irradiation of peptides induces a chemical reaction, namely a shift of the double bond, meaning partial conversion from amide tautomer into an imidic acid tautomer.
