Abstract
In the present work, sixteen different zinc porphyrins (possessing different meso substituents) with and without a chiral guest were modelled using DFT and TD-DFT approaches in order to understand the influence of various controlling factors on electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Two major aspects are influenced by these factors: excitation energy of the electronic transitions and their intensity. In the case of excitation energy, the influence increases in the following order: orientation of the peripheral substituents

Abstract
This review arises from the need to rationalize the huge amount of information on the structural and spectroscopic properties of a peculiar class of porphyrin derivatives-the non-ionic PEGylated porphyrins-collected during almost two decades of research. The lack of charged groups in the molecular architecture of these porphyrin derivatives is the leitmotif of the work and plays an outstanding role in highlighting those interactions between porphyrins, or between porphyrins and target molecules (e.g., hydrophobic-, hydrogen bond related-, and coordination-interactions, to name just a few) that are often masked by stronger electrostatic contributions. In addition, it is exactly these weaker interactions between porphyrins that make the aggregated forms more prone to couple efficiently with external perturbative fields like weak hydrodynamic vortexes or temperature gradients. In the absence of charge, solubility in water is very often achieved by covalent functionalization of the porphyrin ring with polyethylene glycol chains. Various modifications, including of chain length or the number of chains, the presence of a metal atom in the porphyrin core, or having two or more porphyrin rings in the molecular architecture, result in a wide range of properties. These encompass self-assembly with different aggregate morphology, molecular recognition of biomolecules, and different photophysical responses, which can be translated into numerous promising applications in the sensing and biomedical field, based on turn-on/turn-off fluorescence and on photogeneration of radical species.

Abstract
Porphyrinoids are extremely attractive for their electronic, optical, and coordination properties as well as for their versatile substitution at meso/β-positions. All these features allow porphyrinoids to behave as chiroptical hosts for chiral recognition by means of non-covalent interactions towards chiral guests. Over the years, chiral discrimination of chiral molecules such as amino acids, alcohols, amines, hydroxy-carboxylic acids, etc. has aroused the interest of the scientific community. Hence, this review aims to report on the progress to date by illustrating some relevant research regarding the chiral recognition of a multitude of chiral organic guests through several chiral mono- and bis-porphyrins via different spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) stand out over other metal nanoparticles thanks to their peculiar bactericidal and spectroscopic properties. Tunability of the AgNPs chemical-physical properties could be provided through their organic covalent coating. On the other hand, PEGylated porphyrin derivatives are versatile heteromacrocycles investigated for uses in the biomedical field as cytotoxic and tracking agents, but also as sensors. In this work, an easy multi-step approach was employed to produce coated silver nanoparticles. Specifically, the AgNPs were functionalized with 5,10,15-[p-(ω-methoxy-polyethyleneoxy)phenyl]-20-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-porphyrin (P(PEG350)3), using chloropropanethiol as a coupling agent. The P(PEG350)3 was structurally characterized through MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and thermal analyses. The functionalization of AgNPs was monitored step-by-step employing UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and thermogravimetric techniques. HRTEM and STEM measurements were used to investigate the morphology and the composition of the resulting nanostructured system (AgNP@P(PEG350)3), observing a long-range alignment of the outer porphyrin layer. The AgNP@P(PEG350)3 combines the features of the P(PEG350)3 with those of AgNPs, producing a potential multifunctional theranostic tool. The nanosystem revealed itself suitable as a removable pH sensor in aqueous solutions and potentially feasible for biological environment applications.

Abstract
Chiral porphyrin hetero-aggregates, produced from meso-tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyl) porphyrin H2T4 and copper(II) meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin CuTPPS by an imprinting effect in the presence of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), are shown herein to serve as templates for the generation of chiral structures during the oxidative conversion of the amino acid to melanin. This remarkable phenomenon is suggested to involve the initial role of L-DOPA and related chiral intermediates like dopachrome as templates for the production of chiral porphyrin aggregates. When the entire chiral pool from DOPA is lost, chiral porphyrin hetero-aggregate would elicit axially chiral oligomer formation from 5,6-dihydroxyindole intermediates in the later stages of melanin synthesis. These results, if corroborated by further studies, may open unprecedented perspectives for efficient strategies of asymmetric melanin synthesis with potential biological and technological applications.

Abstract
The interaction of different amino acids and vacuum evaporated tetraphenyl porphyrin films was investigated by using kinetic isotherms, UV-vis spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance and density functional theory techniques. The adsorption process was analyzed by using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. From these results, the adsorption order changed depending on the chemical characteristics of the porphyrin film, although most of the interactions were classified as pseudo-second-order at the films interface. From absorbance measurements, red shifts on the Soret peak positions were observed for all amino acids interacting with the metal free and the ZnTPP systems, while the position of the Soret peak barely change for the CuTPP surface, except for a slight bathocromic shift for arginine. On the other hand, the broadening of the Soret peak was more important for the ZnTPP and H2TPP surfaces, but the interaction with the CuTPP interfaces decreased the width of the peaks in all cases. In addition, a quartz crystal microbalance analysis was employed to investigate the film sensing performance during amino acid exposure. From these results, positively charged amino acids were more easily adsorbed on the films in contrast with the polar (serine) molecule. DFT calculations exhibited important deformations for H2TPP, the out-of-plane displacement of the Zn atom for ZnTPP, and hydrogen bond interactions with the CuTPP molecule. DFT also showed high binding energies for the positively charged amino acids but low binding energies for serine in agreement with experimental data. From these results, porphyrin films could be used as selective detectors for various L-amino acid molecules.

Abstract
In this work, metal free, zinc and copper tetraphenyl porphyrin thin films were employed as substrates to study their interaction with glycine, serine, glutamate, lysine and argynine amino acids in order to investigate the effect of the metallic center and the amino acid characteristics in the adsorption phenomena. The amount of amino acid adsorbed on the films was quantified by using the Ruhemann method. Adsorption isotherms were obtained and analyzed in order to predict the adsorption mechanism for each case. In addition, the morphology of the films was investigated before and after the amino acid immersion by using scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. On the other hand, dynamic contact angle measurements were performed to monitor the spreading phenomena and changes in the hydrophobic nature of the surfaces after the amino acid interaction. From the results, it was observed that the largest deposited amino acid on all three surfaces corresponded to the positively charged compounds, while serine was the lowest adsorbed amino acid in all cases. These results can be attributed to electronic interactions between the amino acids’ lateral chains and the electronic [Formula: see text] distribution of the porphyrin macrocycle ring, and they provide important information regarding the amino acid selectivity of adsorption on tetraphenyl porphyrin films.

Abstract
Sn(iv) porphyrins ([Sn(iv)TTP(3PyO)2] (5) and [Sn(iv)TPP(3PyO)2] (6) [tetrathienylporphyrin (TTP), tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), and pyridyloxy (PyO)]) were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity upon irradiation with 625 nm light has been studied. The presence of the 3PyO axial ligands was found to limit the aggregation and enhance the solubility of 5 and 6 in DMF/H2O (1 : 1). The photophysical properties and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity of the meso-2-thienyl and meso-phenyl-substituted Sn(iv) porphyrins are compared. 5 and 6 were found to be photocytotoxic in MCF-7 cancer cells when irradiated with a Thorlabs M625L3 LED at 625 nm but remained nontoxic in the dark. The PDT activity of Sn(iv) meso-tetra-2-thienylporphyrin 5 was found to be significantly enhanced relative to its analogous tetraphenylporphyrin 6. There is a marked red-shift of the Q00 band of 5 into the therapeutic window due to the meso-2-thienyl rings, and 5 has an unusually high singlet oxygen quantum yield value of 0.83 in DMF. The results demonstrate that readily synthesized axially ligated Sn(iv) meso-arylporphyrins are potentially suitable for use as singlet oxygen photosensitizers in biomedical applications and merit further in depth investigation in this context.

Abstract
A new concept in the formulation of hybrid nanostructured materials combining high quality graphene 3D supported by Nickel foam and polyporphyrins for visible light photocatalytic application is here reported. Our innovative approach involves the development of a freestanding device able to: i) offer a high surface area to bind the photosensitizers by π-π interactions, and ii) enhance stability and photocatalytic efficiency by using cyclic porphyrin polymers. For these purposes, homo- and co-polymerization reactions by using different porphyrin (free or zinc complexed) monomers were performed. The microscopic structures and morphology of graphene polymer nanocomposites were investigated by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Finally, photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation of the obtained nanocomposites was tested, by using methylene blue (MB) as organic pollutant. The obtained data suggested that hindered cyclic polymeric structures stacked on graphene surface by non-covalent interactions, restrict the formation of non photoactive aggregates and, as a consequence, induce an enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Remarkably, our systems show a degradation efficiency in the visible-light range much higher than other similar devices containing nanoporphyrin units reported in literature.

Abstract
In this study, 5,10,15-tri[p(9-methoxy-triethyleneoxy)phenyl]-20-[p-phenylisophthalate-β-cyclodextrin]porphyrin, a compound containing a porphyrin and a β-cyclodextrin unit covalently linked by means of an isophthalic bridge, was synthesized and characterized by NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and UV-vis and circular dichroism spectroscopies. This porphyrin/β-cyclodextrin system, with the porphyrin unit connected to the lower rim (OH-2) of the cyclodextrin structure, is water-soluble and no evidence of a self-assembly arrangement between the porphyrin and cyclodextrin units appears. In this way, the β-cyclodextrin cavities remain free, retaining their potential ability of drug-delivery, with the spectroscopic advantage induced by the high absorbance of the porphyrin unit. Furthermore, the porphyrin unit, interacting with the guest and acting as a lid, could have a role in the controlled release process of the drug.

Abstract
The recognition of some globular proteins was carried out in aqueous solution, at micromolar concentrations, by using an uncharged symmetrical cobalt-porphyrin (Co-P). By means of UV/Vis, induced circular dichroism, and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques, it was ascertained that the interactions between specific amino acid residues and Co-P occurred on the protein surface. In particular, spectroscopic evidence showed the formation of supramolecular complexes without disruption of the native structure of the proteins and, furthermore, that signal changes were characteristic of each Co-P/protein system, so that they could be used as a highly sensitive analytical tool for protein recognition. The relative association constants were proportional to the protein molecular masses (and then to the number of amino acid residues).

Abstract
The use of colloidal systems in pharmaceutical formulations, for addressing the issue of selective and controlled drug delivery or for improving drug availability, requires an accurate previous characterization of their chemical and physical properties. Light scattering is a useful and non-invasive method to study the structure and conformation of colloids in a wide space-scale, encompassing nanometric- to micrometric-sized particles, as well as their size distribution, surface electrostatic potential and aggregation phenomena occurring under proper conditions. In this review the physical bases of the light scattering approach are described and many examples are reported to discuss the examination of various multiphase systems useful in pharmaceutical fields.
