Ab Initio and Variational Transition State Approach to β-C3N4 Formation: Kinetics for the Reaction of CH3NH2 with H

Insights into the role of the H-abstraction reaction kinetics of amines in understanding their degeneration fates under atmospheric and combustion conditions

Amines, a class of prototypical volatile organic compounds, have garnered considerable interest within the context of atmospheric and combustion chemistry due to their substantial contributions to the formation of hazardous pollutants in the atmosphere. In the current energy landscape, the implementation of carbon-neutral energy and strategic initiatives leads to generation of new amine sources that cannot be overlooked in terms of the emission scale. To reduce the emission level of amines from their sources and mitigate their impact on the formation of harmful substances, a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental reaction kinetics during the degeneration process of amines is imperative. This perspective article first presents an overview of both traditional amine sources and emerging amine sources within the context of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality and then highlights the importance of H-abstraction reactions in understanding the atmospheric and combustion chemistry of amines from the perspective of reaction kinetics. Subsequently, the current experimental and theoretical techniques for investigating the H-abstraction reactions of amines are introduced, and a concise summary of research endeavors made in this field over the past few decades is provided. In order to provide accurate kinetic parameters of the H-abstraction reactions of amines, advanced kinetic calculations are performed using the multi-path canonical variational theory combined with the small-curvature tunneling and specific-reaction parameter methods. By comparing with the literature data, current kinetic calculations are comprehensively evaluated, and these validated data are valuable for the development of the reaction mechanism of amines.

Kinetics and quantitative structure-activity relationship study on the degradation reaction from perfluorooctanoic acid to trifluoroacetic acid

Investigation of the degradation kinetics of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been carried out to calculate rate constants of the main elementary reactions using the multichannel Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory and canonical variational transition state theory with small-curvature tunneling correction over a temperature range of 200~500 K. The Arrhenius equations of rate constants of elementary reactions are fitted. The decarboxylation is role step in the degradation mechanism of PFOA. For the perfluorinated carboxylic acids from perfluorooctanoic acid to trifluoroacetic acid, the quantitative structure-activity relationship of the decarboxylation was analyzed with the genetic function approximation method and the structure-activity model was constructed. The main parameters governing rate constants of the decarboxylation reaction from the eight-carbon chain to the two-carbon chain were obtained. As the structure-activity model shows, the bond length and energy of C1-C2 (RC1-C2 and EC1-C2) are positively correlated to rate constants, while the volume (V), the energy difference between EHOMO and ELUMO (ΔE), and the net atomic charges on atom C2 (QC2) are negatively correlated.

Theoretical study on the chemical formation mechanism of a β-myrcene ozonolysis reaction under atmospheric conditions

Density functional theory (DFT) was used to study the β-myrcene ozonolysis reaction. The reactants, intermediates, transition states, and products were optimized at the MPWB1K/6–31G(d,p) level. The single-point energies were performed at the MPWB1K/6–311+G(3df,2p) level. The profiles of the potential energy surfaces were constructed and the rate constants of the reaction steps were analyzed. The possible reaction mechanisms for the ozonolysis intermediates in real atmosphere are also discussed. Based on quantum chemistry information, the rate constants were calculated using Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) theory and the canonical variational transition-state theory (CVT) with small curvature tunneling effect (SCT). Arrhenius equations of rate constants over the temperature range of 200–800 K are provided, and the lifetimes of the reaction species in the troposphere were estimated according to rate constants.

Mechanism and kinetics study on the OH-initiated oxidation of organophosphorus pesticide trichlorfon in atmosphere

Trichlorfon [O,O-dimethyl-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxy-ethyl) phosphonate] (TCF) is a kind of widely used organophosphorus pesticides. In this paper, the mechanism and possible oxidation products for the OH-initiated reactions of TCF are studied at the MPWB1K/6-311+G(3df,2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) level. The study shows that H abstraction reaction from the CH(3) group and the CH group as well as OH addition reaction to the P atom are energetically favorable for the reactions of TCF and the main products are (CH(3)O)(2)POOH (P1), CCl(3)CHOHPOOH(OCH(3)) (P2), CH(3)OPO(2) (P3), CCl(3)COPO(OCH(3))(2) (P6) and HCHO. On the basis of the quantum chemical information, the kinetic calculation is performed and the rate constants are calculated over a temperature range of 200-800K using the transition state theory and canonical variational transition state theory with small-curvature tunneling effect. The Arrhenius formulas of rate constants with the temperature are fitted and the lifetimes of the reaction species in the troposphere are estimated according to the rate constants, which can provide helpful information for the model simulation study.
