Abstract
The distinctive characteristics of near-infrared fluorescent organic molecules render them indispensable across diverse applications, from energy harvesting to bioimaging and sensing technologies. In this work, we continue our investigation on the chalcone derivative, 4-dimethylamino-2'-hydroxychalcone (nDHC, n = 1; where n is the number of olefinic bonds), by expanding the number of central double bonds (n = 2 (2DHC) and n = 3 (3DHC)). Additionally, we also synthesized the structurally related chalcones lacking the OH group (DC, 2DC, 3DC) in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of their effects on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). The results show remarkable bathochromic shifts in absorption and fluorescence peaks in solution as n increases. These shifts, 20 nm and 35 nm for absorption and 100 nm and 200 nm for fluorescence in 2DHC and 3DHC, respectively, signify enhanced ICT and a significant increase in the excited state's dipole moment. The presence of OH groups notably amplifies these shifts due to additional electron donation, influencing solute-solvent interactions in solution. Femtosecond fluorescence upconversion and transient absoprtion techniques unraveled distinct dynamics in these derivatives, exhibiting the dominance of vibrational cooling, solvation, and intramolecular motions, particularly in the larger conjugated systems 3DHC and 3DC. The observed changes in the femtosecond transinet absorption spectra suggest the existence of new active states in extended conjugation systems, indicating diverse intramolecular conformational states contributing to their relaxation dynamics. The results of this study provide invaluable insights into excited-state spectroscopy, offering a roadmap for tailoring chalcone derivatives for specific applications.

Abstract
Using high-fidelity, permeable, lipophilic, and bright fluorophores for imaging lipid droplets (LDs) in tissues holds immense potential in diagnosing conditions such as diabetic or alcoholic fatty liver disease. In this work, we utilized linear and Λ-shaped polarity-sensitive fluorescent probes for imaging LDs in both cellular and tissue environments, specifically in rats with diabetic and alcoholic fatty liver disease. The fluorescent probes possess several key characteristics, including high permeability, lipophilicity, and brightness, which make them well-suited for efficient LD imaging. Notably, the probes exhibit a substantial Stokes shift, with 143 nm for DCS and 201 nm for DCN with selective targeting of the lipid droplets. Our experimental investigations successfully differentiated morphological variations between diseased and normal tissues in three distinct tissue types: liver, adipose, and small intestine. They could help provide pointers for improved detection and understanding of LD-related pathologies.

Abstract
The photoinitiated proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process in photoacid-based adducts is predominantly governed by the evolution of the electron-proton transfer state. However, such a process is underexplored in the case of photobases as the excited states evolve through multiple competitive channels. Here, we elucidate the excited-state dynamics of a photobase, 4-[4'-(dimethylamino)styryl]pyridine (DMASP), in the presence of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) that enables PCET. Transient absorption measurements show the evolution of a protonated species in the excited state with a time constant of ∼2.5 ps. Fluorescence upconversion measurements reveal the signatures of an emissive intramolecular charge transfer state and a protonated state. The role of such states is further confirmed by time-resolved measurements in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid and computational analysis. Furthermore, the proton-abstraction dynamics of DMASP is analyzed in bulk methanol and butanol solvents. The extent of proton abstraction by DMASP is found to be higher in the presence of HFIP when compared with the normal alcohols over a time period of a few picoseconds.

Abstract
Understanding the dynamics of the back electron transfer (BET) rate of ion pairs from the electronically excited state of donor-acceptor systems is crucial for developing materials for organic electronics. The structure-property relationships in the organic molecular architectures play a key role in controlling the BET rate and have been utilized as a criterion to design systems with a reduced BET rate. Here, we examine the influence of isomerism on the BET rate in anthracene based systems, viz., (E)-2-(2-(anthracen-9-yl)vinyl)benzonitrile (ortho-CN) and (E)-3-(2-(anthracen-9-yl)vinyl)benzonitrile (meta-CN) with N,N-diethylaniline (DEA) in methylcyclohexane using time-resolved spectroscopy. The radical cation (DEA˙+) and the radical anion (ortho-CN˙- or meta-CN˙-) generated after photoexcitation show synchronous decay kinetics, and the rate constant of back electron transfer (kBET) for the DEA/ortho-CN pair was 6.6 × 104 s-1, which is ca. 2 orders of magnitude lower compared with the DEA/meta-CN pair. The role of isomerism in providing resonance stabilization for the organic radicals is expected to have implications for strategies that retard charge recombination in photovoltaics. The role of the molecular structural features that dictate the kinetics for charge recombination has been further identified using quantum calculations.

Abstract
Abstract
Excitation and emission (observation) conditions heavily impact fluorescence measurements. Both observed spectra and intensity decays (fluorescence lifetimes), when incorrectly measured, may lead to incorrect data interpretations. In this report, we discuss the role of observation conditions in steady-state and time-resolved (lifetime) fluorescence measurements. We demonstrate the importance of the correction for uneven transmissions of vertical and horizontal polarizations of emission light through the detection system. The necessity of using so-called total fluorescence intensity or intensity measured under magic angle (MA) conditions has been demonstrated for both steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The dependence of lifetime measurements on observation (emission) wavelengths is also discussed. Two fluorophores, rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 4,4 Dimethylamino-cyano stilbene (DCS) in two solvents - ethanol and glycerol have been used in order to cover a broad range of dye polarities and solvent viscosities.

Abstract
Bandshape analysis of charge-transfer optical bands in room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) was performed to extract the reorganization energy of electron transfer. Remarkably, the reorganization energies in ILs are close to those in cyclohexane. This result runs against common wisdom in the field since conducting ILs, which are characterized by an infinite static dielectric constant, and nonpolar cyclohexane fall to the opposite ends of the polarity scale based on their dielectric constants. Theoretical calculations employing structure factors of ILs from molecular dynamics simulations support the low values of the reorganization energy. Standard dielectric arguments do not apply to solvation in ILs, and nonergodic reorganization energies are required for a quantitative analysis.

Abstract
For the first time we have utilized push-pull stilbene as a visible light activated photoremovable protecting group (PRPG) for the uncaging of alcohols and carboxylic acids. The PRPG efficiently release caged molecules with good photochemical quantum yield. It is capable of monitoring the release in real time owing to its fluorescence "turn on" phenomenon upon photorelease in polar medium. The efficient photorelease and real time monitoring abilities of push-pull stilbene were employed for in vitro drug delivery.

Abstract
The Z and E isomers of 3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-2-(2,4,6-tribromophenyl)acrylonitrile, C17H13Br3N2, (1), were obtained simultaneously by a Knoevenagel condensation between 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde and 2-(2,4,6-tribromophenyl)acetonitrile, and were investigated by X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) quantum-chemical calculations. The (Z)-(1) isomer is monoclinic (space group P21/n, Z′ = 1), whereas the (E)-(1) isomer is triclinic (space group P\overline{1}, Z′ = 2). The two crystallographically-independent molecules of (E)-(1) adopt similar geometries. The corresponding bond lengths and angles in the two isomers of (1) are very similar. The difference in the calculated total energies of isolated molecules of (Z)-(1) and (E)-(1) with DFT-optimized geometries is ∼4.47 kJ mol−1, with the minimum value corresponding to the Z isomer. The crystal structure of (Z)-(1) reveals strong intermolecular nonvalent Br...N [3.100 (2) and 3.216 (3) Å] interactions which link the molecules into layers parallel to (10\overline{1}). In contrast, molecules of (E)-(1) in the crystal are bound to each other by strong nonvalent Br...Br [3.5556 (10) Å] and weak Br...N [3.433 (4) Å] interactions, forming chains propagating along [110]. The crystal packing of (Z)-(1) is denser than that of (E)-(1), implying that the crystal structure realized for (Z)-(1) is more stable than that for (E)-(1).

Abstract
Styryl and/or quinoline structural fragments, present in a large number of bioactive substances, inspired the design of various new drug candidates. In this paper, we describe the photophysical behavior of trans-[2-(4-methoxystyryl)]quinoline-1-oxide (trans-MSQNO) on the basis of X-ray analysis data, theoretical calculations as well as steady state and time-resolved spectroscopy experiments in various media. The molecule crystallizes in orthorhombic unit cell containing eight molecules of N-oxide, space group Pbca. The NO bond is substantially shorter in comparison with the NO bond in the ZnTPP unit [1.3052(11) Å vs. 1.335(2) Å]. Variation of emission colors from the violet (~450nm) through blue (480nm), green (525nm) and yellow (575nm) is observed in different environments. Comparable values of lifetimes estimated both at ambient temperature and at 77K suggest that excited state dynamics in this case is viscosity independent. DFT and TD DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) calculations performed for four different trans-MSQNO rotamers in the gas phase, as well as nonpolar and polar media (PCM model) suggest that an equilibrium between them can be significantly altered even by a relatively weak interactions with the environment. It is suggested that varying intensity ratios of experimental absorption bands in different media may be due to the dominant share of one or more rotamers of the excited trans-MSQNO molecule. Gas phase calculations show also that the vertical ππ*, S0→S1, transition resulting from the HOMO→LUMO electronic configuration exhibits only a partial CT nature. On the other hand, in polar media, a substantial increment of excited state dipole moment of all rotamers compared to the ground state, its increase with increasing solvent polarity and a significant red shift in the absorption and emission spectra, point to the enhanced CT nature of the S1 excited state. Hence, the trans-MSQNO molecule may be considered a subsequent styrylquinoline drug candidate where the CT drug-receptor interactions are of a high importance.

Abstract
The spectral characteristics of trans-2-[4'-(N,N-dimethylamino)styryl]imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (t-DMASIP-b) have been investigated using absorption and fluorescence techniques, and compared with 2-(4'-N,N-dimethylamino)imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (DMAPIP-b). The study reveals that introduction of a C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond strongly perturbs the photophysics of the system. Unlike DMAPIP-b, t-DMASIP-b emits a single emission in aprotic and protic solvents. The emission occurs from the locally excited state in nonpolar solvents and from a planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) state in polar solvents. Multiple linear regression analysis suggests that among the different solvent parameters, the dipolar interaction contributes more to the stabilization of the system in both the ground and excited states. Theoretical calculations suggest that, unlike in DMAPIP-b, proton coupled twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) emission does not occur in t-DMASIP-b. The higher quantum yield obtained in the viscous solvent glycerol is attributed to the restriction of the twisting of the olefinic bond. The photoirradiation of t-DMASIP-b shows that isomerization takes place in all solvents, including viscous glycerol. The theoretically simulated potential energy surface shows that isomerization occurs via a phantom state, which is a nonradiative process. The rise in temperature favors the photoisomerization, thus, the fluorescence quantum yield decreases. The prototropic study indicates that, unlike in DMAPIP-b, the protonation takes place at different places to form the monocations.

Abstract
Time-resolved emission spectra of 4-dimethylamino-4'-cyano-stilbene (DMACS) and 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-stilbene (resveratrol, RSV) in propylene glycol and in rigid silica xerogel matrix at 23°C were studied. For the polar molecule DMACS in propylene glycol, a 66nm shift of maximum wavelength of emission spectra was observed within 1ns after excitation, and most of the shift occurred during the first 200ps. For resveratrol in propylene glycol no such a shift was observed. The rigid silica environment eliminates some deactivation pathways and stabilizes spectroscopic properties of both molecules. Spectral properties of nonpolar and high dipole moment molecules in viscous liquids and rigid environments are compared. Results are explained on the basis of intramolecular processes and solute-solvent relaxation, as well.

Abstract
The photochemical behavior of 4-dimethylamino-4'-cyanodiphenylacetylene (DCDPA) has been examined by ab initio complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and its second-order multireference Moller-Plesset perturbation (MRMP2) methods. DCDPA is mainly excited into an internal charge-transfer (ICT) state where the charge transfers from the dimethylanilino group into the benzonitrile part. In S(1), there are two stable geometries. One is an ICT state where DCDPA is skeletally relaxed from the stable geometry in S(0) upon electronic excitation. The other is a diradical state where DCDPA takes a trans-bent form and the acetylenic C identical withC triple bond turns to be an ethylenic C horizontal lineC double bond, as already confirmed in the case of parent diphenylacetylene. On the way to the globally stable trans-bent form in S(1), a conical intersection between the charge-transfer and the diradical state is located. The photochemical behavior of DCDPA in polar solvent has been also examined by CASSCF combined with the polarized continuum model. Thereby, it was found that a twisted ICT (TICT) state where the dimethylanilino group is perpendicularly twisted against the remaining part is formed in polar solvent.

Abstract
Electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra of 4,5'-diamino[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4',6'-dicarbonitrile (1) were recorded at room temperature in several solvents of different polarity. The results of spectroscopic measurements are analyzed using the theory of solvatochromism, based on a dielectric continuum description of the solvent and the classical Onsager cavity model. The difference in the excited and ground state dipole moments (mu(e)-mu(g)) of the molecule under study was estimated using methods applied by Bayliss, Ooshika, McRae, Lippert, Mataga, Bakhshiev and Kawski. Finally, the influence of polarizability on the determined change of the dipole moment was discussed. Austin model 1 (AM1) semiempirical molecular calculations were carried out to estimate the ground state dipole moment.
